Results of ceasefire monitoring

In general, the ceasefire has been observed in most provinces of the Syrian Arab Republic. Within last 24 hours, 10 ceasefire violations have been registered (Latakia – 7, Aleppo – 3).

In Aleppo, militants of Ahrar al-Sham militants carried out mortar shelling againat Sheikh Maqsood, al-Halidiyah, and al-Suleimonia).

In northern regions of the Latakia province, Ahrar al-Sham formations carried out 7 mortar shellings against Qalaz Tahtani.

Russian Aerospace Forces and Syrian Air Force did not make strikes on opposition armed formations, which follow ceasefire regime and informed the Russian or American Centres for reconciliation about their location.

Humanitarian aid to the population of Syria

Bread bakery of Aleppo has received 800 kilograms of flour in prder to produce bread for eastern regions of the Homs province.

Humanitarian convoys to inhabited localities of the Hama and Homs inhabited areas are being formed.

Additional information

In the Latakia province, Jabhat al-Nusra formations continue mortar shelling against the government troops near Hara. Terrorists performed shelling against Handrat from Muhein Handrat.

“Silence regime” in Eastern Ghuta has been extended until 12 a.m. May 3 by Russian and American parties under agreement with the Syrian government and moderate opposition.

Formations of Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist grouping took efforts to violate the ceasefire regime in Aleppo by continuing shelling against the government troops and living city sectors.

Terrorists carried out shelling with improvised Hellfire-type multiple launch rocket systems against Sheikh Maqsood, Meidan, and al-Suryan.

Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists also performed shelling with multiple launch rocket systems against a maternity in al-Muhafaza city sector. According to civilians and militia, 6 citizens were killed and 39 ones were wounded.

Leaders of the Russian Centre for reconciliation and the American Centre in Amman (Jordan) discussed observing of the “Silence regime” in northern regions of the Latakia province and Eastern Ghuta as well as establishing the regime in the Aleppo province in the nearest time.

Militants of Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist grouping continued warfare in the north-west of Aleppo. They carried out shelling with multiple launch rocket systems against Sheikh Maqsood, Meidan, and al-Suryan city sectors. There are killed and injured among military servicemen and civilians.

The American party welcomed the proposal initiated by the Russian side concerning reestablishing the “Silence regime” in Eastern Ghuta and Northern Latakia by 24 hours (until 12 a.m. May 5) and in Aleppo by 48 hours (until 12 a.m. May 6).

United States Mk 14 EBR in Syria

Images recently uploaded to Twitter by the Free Syrian Amy’s ‘Division 30’ show combatants with US-made arms. In one image, a Mk 14 EBR (enhanced battle rifle) series weapon is visible in the foreground, while another fighter holds what is likely an M16A4 rifle.

The Mk 14 EBR series are self-loading rifles chambered for 7.62 x 51 mm and typically employed as designated marksman rifles (DMR). Originally introduced by the US Navy, Mk 14 series rifles have since been produced for other US service branches and sold to foreign allies. The model pictured appears to have been produced by Rock Island Arsenal, in Illinois. Minor diagnostic details such as the type of optic, scope mount, bipod, and other components distinguish it from other models. It is designated as the M14EBR-RI, and some 6,200 examples were fielded by the US Army. Another photo uploaded the same day shows fighters with a 120 mm M120 mortar system, with one fighter carrying another M16-type rifle.

It is not clear how Division 30 acquired these weapons, but it is likely they received them as part of a US-administered train and equip programme. The Mk 14 EBR has previously been seen in Iraq in the hands of IS fighters, as seen below, thought to be captured from Iraqi security forces who had, in turn, received it from the United States. With recent reports that Jabhat al-Nusra fighters successfully abducted members of Division 30, and killed others, there remains a possibility that some of these supplied weapons will yet find their way into the hands of other groups.
