Sure. Not going to start Ww3 right now. But a limited strike like the one ordered by President Trump is an option.

A limited strike will not stop the assault on Ghouta. The most that can be done is economic sanctions on responsible Syrian, Iranian and Russian officials.

The better thing to do for the West is to silently secure a huge chunk of Syria as its area of control, like what the US is doing now with very little fanfare. I think there are French special forces and SAS in the area covered by US and Kurds.

The only way to stop Assad forces' assault on Ghouta is to declare a no-fly zone over it. That cannot be done without destroying Syrian and Russian SAMs and fighter jets in the area. This can be done by the US but that will be WW3.

1. Initially, the Russian government official line was that there were no Russian casualties in Deir ez-Zor:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/13/russian-mercenaries-killed-us-airstrikes-syria

2. Then as more evidence of Russian deaths started to surface from Russian sources through social media sites Moscow finally admits that there were Russian deaths in Deir ez-Zor, but that there were only 5 deaths:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...-300-killed-and-wounded-sources-idUSKCN1FZ2DZ

3. But 5 days ago the Russian Foreign Ministry finally admits that "several dozens" of Russian citizens were killed in Deir ez-Zor:

http://www.scmp.com/news/world/midd...several-dozen-its-citizens-mercenaries-killed

It appears that Putin has gambled that the Americans will not resist the incursion of Russian mercenaries into the oil fields in Deir ez-Zor so he sent in Russian mercenaries without air cover. But when the Americans resisted and laid waste to Putin's pawns he simply washed his hands and tried to keep a lid on the incident as if nothing happened. All those Russian mercenaries killed in that incident are mere dispensable tools to Putin that he would not even properly acknowledge these people who died trying to fulfill his adventures in Syria.

Interestingly, the Americans also do not want to make a big deal out of this incident perhaps so as not to embarrass Russia.
If citizens of a country serving in PMC are killed then that country are not responsible for their death. For what we know that wagger group was hired by Iran or Syria as they were leading a Syrian assault .
If that it case then US forces are deployed in Ukraine and Yemen

But that it not the case .In Yemen it is UAE and SA while in Ukraine it is local oligarch.
PMC have less equipment ,less training and have less discipline so they perform worse.

That tall skinhead guy to the left of Putin in the photo is Lt. Col. Dmitry Utkin, the founder of Wagner Group.

Unlike the desperate ragtags of Americans who fought in Ukraine and in the ME against ISIS, Wagner is an organized paramilitary organization that Russia has hired in its various wars from Ukraine to Syria. The Russian government has even handed out awards to Wagner commanders for the capture of Pamyra.

I know that but the point is that there is no proof of them hiring Wagner. It could be Iran or Syria also. Even Erik prince has connection with Trump administration but that means academi is only working for US. What is the proof that the deployment was on order russian mod?

We are not born yesterday here. We know how Russia operate. If you think I can be fooled as easily as how Russians fool their own citizens then forget it.

The business of war: Russian mercenaries in Syria

A paramilitary chief who serves as a contact for Russians who want to become mercenaries in Syria discusses the grim business of making war for profit. He spoke to FRANCE 24 only on condition of anonymity.

If you live near Russia's Yekaterinburg and want to fight with pro-regime forces in Syria, there’s one man you need to speak to. He is a paramilitary chief who advises Russians wanting to work for Wagner, a shadowy Kremlin-linked private military contractor known for sending mercenaries to Syria.

“Each week I receive five or six new requests,” he told FRANCE 24. “Some call me by phone, others come to see me. About a hundred people in the region are planning to go to Syria.”

He said that interest has only increased since the Russian foreign ministry reported that five Russians died in a US bombing raid on pro-regime troops attacking opposition forces in Syria's Deir Ezzor province on February 7.

“Now, it’s more about getting revenge than it is about money,” he said.

But the chief warned that these revenge-seekers don’t know the whole story. According to him, it wasn’t just five Russians killed in the American raid – it was 218. (US officials have said about 100 pro-regime fighters were killed, without specifying whether they were Syrian army, Russian or other forces.)

However, the paramilitary chief said only 150 bodies have so far been recovered.

“There are 150 people in refrigerators on the Wagner base” back in Russia, he said. “Their state? 'Minced meat' is how they described them to me.”

Even so, the chief doesn’t feel much sympathy for those who died; he believes it is a fate they chose.

“If you sign up with a private military company, you have sold yourself to them for money,” he said. “The company can use you however it wants. What will happen to you after your death? If you’ve been turned into mincemeat, so what? They put you in a bag, close the coffin and – in the best-case scenario – send you home. In the worst, they bury you there. If you are ready to earn money by killing people and defending the commercial interests of others, then that’s fine.”

Though the assault happened more than two weeks ago, the chief says that the families of the dead still don’t know what happened to their relatives.

“Nothing will happen before the presidential election on March 18,” he told FRANCE 24.

“We all know why. There’s no problem keeping the deaths secret.”

The military chief told FRANCE 24 that these private contractors step in when the Russian government needs deniability.

“What’s the main goal of any private military company? Defend the interests of a government if it can’t use the regular army,” he said.

He says Wagner, which also sends mercenaries to fight in the Donbass region in Ukraine, is in the mercenary business for profit.

“The goal is financial revenue and the possibility of taking control of a large market for oil resources so our country can control it,” he said. “I think that’s a good thing."

"We didn’t start this war. But it’s up to us to finish it."

Russia to Israel: We will defend you if Iran attacks, but also defend Iran’s presence in Syria
Feb 25, 2018 @ 17:30 east of Euphrates,Iran, Israel, Moscow, Syria, US

“If Iran attacks Israel, Russia will stand alongside the US to defend Israel,” said Russian ambassador to Israel Alexander Shein at the Munich security conference last week – in a mixed message from Moscow. This assurance is part of the effort Moscow has been making for some time to allay Israel’s concerns and stop the Netanyahu government from agitating against the peril posed by an Iranian military presence in Syria. The Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu carried this message when he paid an unprecedented visit to Jerusalem last October.
DEBKAfile’s sources note, however, that since the Kremlin is broadcasting contradictory messages, Israel’s concerns are far from being allayed. One the one hand, the Russians, knowing they can’t alter Tehran’s implacable aspiration to “wipe Israel off the map,” are promising to defend the Jewish State and even line up with the United States for this purpose. But on the other, Russian policy-makers seem to believe that Israel ought to be satisfied with their guarantee of safety and understand that it has nothing to fear from the Iranian military sitting permanently in its Syrian back yard. That being so, Israel has no reasonable cause to attack Iranian targets in Syria. Therefore, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps may continue to establish bases under their command in Syria.

Moscow’s affirmation of the Iranian presence in Syria as a fact of life is also intended to reach Washington. If Iranian military bases in Syria are no threat to Israel, because of Moscow’s guarantee, neither should it concern the United States.

Our sources report that Moscow like Tehran are gravely concerned by the Trump administration’s deployment of more than 2,500 Marines to maintain US control of a defense line on the 1,320 km long Syrian borders with Iraq, Jordan and Turkey. The line stretches north from the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border intersection along the Iraqi border in the east (1,000km) and turns round at Hasakah and Manbij to run parallel to northern Syria’s border with Turkey (320km). This American line blocks the passage for pro-Iranian Iraqi Shiite forces to be moved into Syria. It also severs the land corridor coveted by Iran for linking Tehran via Iraq to Syria and Lebanon.
The Russians and Iranians are determined not to let the US get away with its plans to maintain control of eastern Syria while sitting on the Iraqi border to disrupt Iranian influence in Baghdad, ahead of Iraq’s coming elections. Ali Velayati, senor strategic adviser to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said bluntly: “The Islamic resistance must prevent the deployment of US forces east of the Euphrates into Iraq.”
Iran and its Russian and Syrian allies tried to break through the American line on Feb 7, and were repelled. Certain that this attempt will be repeated, Moscow last week deployed a strong deterrent: four elite Russian Su-57 stealth fighters are now in place at the Khmeimim air base in Latakia. A Russian aerial shield is therefore ready to defend Iranian operations in Syria, capable of taking on the stealth aircraft wielded by the US – the F-22 Raptors and the Israeli Air Force’s F-35. Iran can continue to expand its military presence into Syria under Russian protection..

Russia and Iran are overreaching in Syria. Syrian resistance is slowly unifying with extremist factions losing ground in Idlib province. If some kind of central command of the syrian resistance is achieved , the regime and its shia foreign proxies will be outnumbered on all fronts.

I don't think Russia is overreaching in syria. They were invited there while US troops are there illegally. The Syrian gambit has failed and it will remain pro russia for the time being. Iran doesn't have the capability to do much other than provide man power which will be routinely targeted by Israel.

Russia suspected of using 'dumb' bombs to shift blame for Syria war crimes

The Russian air force has used unguided “dumb” bombs in Syria, in what UN sources say could be an effort to shift responsibility for possible war crimes and civilian deaths to their ally, the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.

UN sources told the Guardian that Moscow’s use of less accurate bombs, which are closer in their capability to the Syrian air force’s weapons stockpiles, could be intended to make it more difficult for war crimes investigators to identify those responsible for civilian deaths from airstrikes in Syria.

There seems to be a concerted effort for very similar weaponry to be used [by the Syrian and Russian air forces],” said one UN official. “Since the Syrian air force is using older planes with pilots untrained in smart weapons capabilities, they [Russia] would use less smart weapons capabilities. I suspect they want to use those weapons because it makes attribution more difficult.”

The allegations raise further doubts about Russia’s claims that its aerial campaign in Syria, which was launched in late 2015 in an effort to shore up Assad’s position, and which has reversed his fortunes in the seven-year war, primarily targeted militants and “terrorists”.

Yes, maximum results with minimum effort.

Russian objectives, as I understand, are:
  1. Ensure there is no gas-pipeline from the Arabian peninsula to Europe.
  2. Ensure that US alliance with the Kurds created a rift with Turkey, thus weakening NATO.

Mr Assad is elected president of Syria. If he invited Russian forces to deal with terrorists,...what's wrong with that ?
There is something very fishy about this "chemical weapons" stuff. Why would President Assad use chemical weapons on its own people ? Does not make sense. Prez Assad is a medical Doctor and not a butcher. Look into the background of this person.

The chemical weapons stuff ...to me..seems like the imaginary WMD which Saddam Hussain had....Lies and deception...is accepted norm in NATO counties...because rest of the World is foolish beyond belief to understand these tactics. Good terrorists-Bad terrorists....our terrorist-their terrorists and out bastards (dictators) and their bastards ...
.HYPOCRICY at its best !!!
