Russia: Our active phase in the Syrian war its nearing its end
November 21, 2017 - Fort Russ News - Paul Antonopoulos

MOSCOW, Russia - Russia’s Chief of General Staff and First Deputy Defense Minister Valery Gerasimov said on Monday that the active phase of Russia's counter-terrorism operation in Syria is nearing its end.

"The active phase of the military operation in Syria is nearing end," he said.

"Although some issues are yet to be solved, this stage is coming to its logic end," he continued.

He then went onto highlight Iran's role.
According to Gerasimov, "Russia and Iran have done much to resolve the Syrian crisis."
"Thanks to our joint efforts, terrorists are being wiped out from the Al-Bukamal area in eastern Syria and the Syrian-Iraqi border will soon be taken under control," he said.
"Completely eradicating militant groups, which is only a matter of time, will allow us to move to the post-conflict settlement. But before we do that, we need to secure the previously achieved military gains to prevent terrorists from returning to Syria," the chief of the Russian General Staff stressed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syrian President Bashar Assad, who flew to Russain city of Sochi for a working visit. The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria.

Vladimir Putin congratulated Bashar Assad for his success in fighting Islamist militants, saying "Syria is striving in the fight against terrorist groups," adding "the Syrian people are going through very difficult trials and are gradually approaching the final, unavoidable rout of terrorists."

"You know, we are actively working with other countries as well, with Iraq, the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan. And we are in constant contact with this partners," Putin said at a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Putin expressed hope that the fight against terrorism in Syria will conclude in the very near future.

"Thanks to the Astana process we managed to create de-escalation zones, which served to start a real and deep dialogue with the opposition, pretty much for the first time," Putin stressed.

"Vladimir Putin also introduced Bashar Assad to the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, who were present in Sochi for the next round of meetings on the issues of military construction and the State Armaments Program," as quoted in Tuesday's statement of the Kremlin press service.

Bashar Assad said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the aerial support provided by the Russian Aerospace Forces had been key to resolving the conflict in Syria through diplomacy: "I am very pleased to meet with you two years and a few weeks after Russia launched the operation, which is very successful… It must be admitted that this operation allowed us to advance the political settlement in Syria.”

Syria's President added that Damascus is ready to hold a dialogue with all who are interested in a political settlement in Syria.

Also, Bashar Assad stated that he relies on Russia's support in ensuring that external players don't interfere in the political process in Syria.

"Over this period, great success has been achieved, both directly on the battlefield and in political terms. Many areas of Syria have been liberated from terrorists, and Syrians who were forced to leave them earlier could return to these areas," Assad added.

LOL: US thinks presence in Syria is legal

The United States received no permission from the United Nations to intervene in Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday, 16 November. “We were surprised to hear a statement made by US Defense Secretary James Mattis when talking to the US media representatives, on November 13, that the US Armed Forces are in Syria “with the permission of the UN,” Zakharova said. Her comments were made after Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, said that Washington’s intervention in Syria had been approved by the United Nations. “I want to remind you that the Security Council is the only agency under the UN Charter that is entitled to take decisions on using military force,” she said, adding that no such decision has been taken. “The US forces are there contrary to the wishes of Syria’s legitimate government, in fact acting as occupants,” the diplomat stressed. Outside of the UN, for the US to be able to conduct legal military operations abroad, it should also receive the approval of the Congress - yet this regulation is constantly violated. Activity against terrorist groups, as well as government forces, have taken place in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya and are explained by the fact that the Congress allowed the US forces to fight Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Critics say that the White House and Pentagon are interpreting the legislation too broadly. On October 30th, Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State, stated that “geographical constrictions” [of the bill] should not be a limitation for the US to fight ISIS anywhere in the world, and that no updated legislation was necessary. This doesn’t change the fact that no UNSC permission, on behalf of the international community, was ever given to the US to invade Syria.
