Serious Russian meddling
ISIS got a taste of “Russian meddling” on Thursday after Moscow received intelligence that Kurdish units affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had granted ISIS militants a "secure southern corridor” from Raqqa.
Although such agreements are not uncommon (even the Syrian Arab Army has negotiated similar arrangements, in order to avoid bloody urban massacres), Russian military officials were notified that the withdrawing ISIS forces were heading south towards Palmyra—a
big no-no.
To quote
one of the greatest sentences TASS has ever published,
“Upon receiving the data, the command of the Russian forces in Syria took steps to prevent the militants’ withdrawal southwards.”
This is a very restrained way of saying that 120 ISIS militants traveling in 39 pickup trucks armed with large-caliber machine guns were pounded like tenderized pork chops.
For those of you who are visual learners, RI has kindly provided video evidence of this malicious act of Russian meddling:
The moral of this story:
The military source added that Russian intelligence drones have set up a perimeter around the city to monitor possible terrorist escape routes, with combat aircraft and special forces units engaged in preventing militants’ escape.
“Any attempts by Daesh militants to move toward Palmyra and to build up their forces there will be squashed,” the source said.
Russia knows how to take care of business.
