Russian Missile Order Still On: Iran

MOSCOW - Russia has assured Iran it will honor a deal to supply the Islamic Republic with advanced S-300 air-defense missiles, Tehran's ambassador to Moscow said Nov. 27.

"We had heard reports that Russia would not deliver these systems to Iran, but we asked the Russian side and they denied it," Seyed Mahmoud Reza Sajadi told reporters in Moscow.

"The delivery deadline has already passed, but the Russian side has cited technical problems, which it is working to fix," he added. "We feel that this question will be resolved in the space of one to two months."

The envoy's comments came after Iranian officials had accused Moscow of violating its contract and succumbing to growing pressure from the United States and Israel to halt delivery of the missile systems.

Russia, Iran's closest ally among major world powers, has never officially confirmed the S-300 contract but has reserved the right to sell arms to Iran as long as they are defensive in nature.

Russia's Interfax news agency has reported that the contract calls for Moscow to sell Tehran five batteries of S-300PMU1 missiles for a total price of about $800 million (530 million euros).

A top Iranian general said this month that Russia was six months late in supplying the missiles.

"The contract for the delivery of the Russian S-300 systems is signed. These are defense weapons, intended particularly for the defense of Bushehr (nuclear power plant) which Russian specialists are building in southern Iran," Sajadi said.

"Neither side plans to go back on this contract. ... It is profitable for both sides," the diplomat said.

The S-300PMU1, codenamed the SA-20 Gargoyle by NATO, is a mobile land-based system designed to shoot down aircraft and cruise missiles.

The United States and Israel - neither of which have ruled out air strikes to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring an atomic bomb - fear Iran could use the systems to boost defenses around its nuclear sites.

Iran denies developing atomic weapons and insists that its nuclear energy program is peaceful in nature. Russia has largely backed Iran's claims and is building Iran's first nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

Russia is under pressure from all quarters. I think they are buying time right now. The Iranians will need that system more now that another resolution has been passed against them. Tgey need to strenghthen their air defense before they probably think of pulling out of the NPT.

Iran continues to press Russia for S-300 deliveries

Iran hopes that Russia will fulfill its contract for the supply of S-300 air defense missile systems, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Russia signed a contract with Iran on the supply of S-300 air defense systems to the Islamic Republic in December 2005. However, there have been no official reports on the start of the contract's implementation.
"Russia is under an obligation [to fulfill the S-300 contract] and an official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry has recently said that Russia has always taken its obligations very seriously," the ISNA news agency quoted Ramin Mehmanparast as saying.
"We hope that Russia will fulfill its promises as soon as possible," the diplomat said.
A senior Iranian military official said earlier on Tuesday that Iran could sue Russia in an international court if Moscow refused to fulfill its commitments on the delivery of S-300 to Tehran.
"Because this is an official agreement, it can be pursued through international legal bodies," the official IRNA news agency quoted Brigadier General Mohammad Hassan Mansourian, deputy chief of Iran's air defense, as saying.
Iran suspects that Russia has refused so far to fulfill the S-300 contract due to pressure from Washington and Tel Aviv.
Both the U.S. and Israel have not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program and have expressed concern over the S-300 deliveries, which would significantly strengthen Iran's air defenses.
The latest version of the S-300 series is the S-300PMU2 Favorit, which has a range of up to 195 kilometers (about 120 miles) and can intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles at altitudes from 10 meters to 27 kilometers.
It is considered one of the world's most effective all-altitude regional air defense systems, comparable in performance to the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot system.

Brazil purchase of Russian air defence systems could curtail US sale of aircraft

A Russian delegation met last month with the high command of the Brazilian army to advance in negotiations for the purchase of a ground-air defence system Tor.M23, similar to that sold by Moscow to the Iranian regime.

The system was specially developed by the Russians to counter the possible attacks of the US F-18 Super Hornet fighter bombers, manufacture by Boeing. Sources consulted by Correio Braziliense consider improbable that if Brazil purchases the Russian ground-air defence system, United States would accept to sell attack aircrafts with all its technological secrets included.

Brazil has established as procurement criteria that it will only purchase weapons from those countries willing to include technological information in their sale packages, so that the equipment can then be manufactured in the country.

Meanwhile Brazil is assessing possible military aircraft purchases from US Boeing; French Dassault and Sweden’s Saab. President Lula da Silva has already publicly expressed preference for the French Rafale, but the final decision will be taken following a technical report from the Brazilian Air Force.

A few months ago French president Nicholas Sarkozy and Lula da Silva signed an agreement that included transfer of French technology in case Brazil finally decides to purchase the Dassault aircraft. This is considered one of the main advantages the French hold over their competitors.

Meantime in Caracas Russia and Venezuela are preparing to sign the sale of 53 M1 helicopters which have a double purpose: for civilian use and for the Armed Forces said Russian ambassador Vladimir Zaemskiy.

“The M1 are used by a hundred countries for transport of military hardware, food, medicine and personnel in military and humanitarian missions”, said Zaemskiy. He added Venezuela is developing “a new concept of defence which requires a different technology, which Russia can provide”

Russia extended this year a 2 billion US dollars credit to Venezuela for the purchase of 92 tanks T 72 and an unspecified number of ground-air defence systems.

wonder what boeing is afraid of? The Russians may use the planes to make defense system fullproof against American planes? or give tips to the Iranians on how to use the system against a US/Israeli invasion more effectively?? They can turn around and do the same thing to India if we bought SH in MRCA since Russia is one of our top suppliers causing more delays and possible cancellations in the MRCA, i hope New Delhi is noting this.

Now this might not happen to India considering Russia is our biggest ally, but it goes to show that if we buy American planes this type of arm twisting might be used to a degree on India by the US. America needs leverage on a country to make it do what it wants and it seems they love to use technology as one of them.

Yeah Lethal, I wonder if we get more Russian arms in the future (which we will) if America will sanction us or something down the line. This Brazil fighter jet competition is really good for India to monitor and maybe see how the suppliers behave.

I actually like the P-8i, the C17 and the c-130 but it's the way America brings it's politics into it's deals that pisses me off. They bring clauses and agreements into play then they want to inspect the aircraft every year. I wonder if India is thinking why all the fuss, just buy Russian.

Russian Arm sells

Russia to supply 20 MiG-29 fighters to Myanmar

Moscow, Dec 23 : A contract worth 570 million dollar has been signed for the delivery of 20 Russian MiG-29 fighters for the Myanmar Air Force, business daily Vedomosti quoting a source close to Russia's arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport reported today.

The source at Rosoboronexport said Russian bid to supply MiG-29 Fulcrum-D carrier-based fighter jets beat China's offer to sell its latest J-10 and FC-1 fighters.

Myanmar was rearmed with Chinese military aircraft worth some 2 billion dollar in the 1990s, the paper said.

The country bought 12 MiG-29 fighters in 2001, but this contract is the largest since the 2007 unfulfilled contract to supply Algeria with 34 MiG-29 fighters.

In 2008, a contract for the supply of six MiG fighters was signed with Sri Lanka.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov announced recently that Russia would give Lebanon 10 MiG-29 fighter jets for free, the daily said.

These are MIG-29s not MIG-29Ks. Mig-29K is naval version of Mig-29. Perhaps Myanmar doesn't have enough confidence in Chinese J-10 or J-17s, that's why they are going for Mig-29s.
