Russia to equip Tu-160 bombers with new turbojet engines from 2016

MOSCOW, July 25. /ITAR- TASS/. Russia will start equipping its Tupolev Tu-160 bombers (NATO reporting name: Blackjack) with upgraded NK-32 turbojet engines from 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on Thursday. The engines will be made by the Samara-based enterprise Kuznetsov, a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). Their production was stopped in 1993. UAC Director-General Vladislav Masalov said more than 8 billion rubles ($228 million) would be needed for the project. "This funding is provided in accordance with the federal program for the defense industry development in 2011-2020," he said. A preproduction batch of NK-32 engines will be made in 2016. The Tu-160 is a supersonic strategic swing-wing bomber designed by the Tupolev Bureau in the 1970s-1980s. It was adopted by the army in 1987.

Air Force will use modernised MiG-31 for another 15 years — Deputy PM

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, August 08. /ITAR-TASS/. MiG-31 interceptor will be modernised to remain at Russia's Air Force for another 15 years, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said after visiting several defense enterprises in Nizhny Novgorod. "The aircraft is being modernised, and it is made here, in Nizhny Novgorod, at the Sokol aircraft plant." Rogozin said the unique aircraft "it cannot be compared to any other aircraft." The supersonic aircraft is promising and its production should be resumed, he said. "This view was discussed at parliamentary hearings at the State Duma, and further on it was supported by the Defence Ministry, the Military Industrial Commission, by industries and deputies," Rogozin said. The Mikoyan MiG-31 (NATO reporting name: Foxhound) is a long-range all-weather supersonic interceptor aircraft. A group of four aircrafts of the kind may control the air space along the front of 800-900 kilometres.
Production of MiG-31 began in 1979. Since then, the aircraft has been improved, modified and adjusted to new combat tasks. As of early 1992, the CIS air defence units had over 200 aircrafts of the class. China bought 24 aircrafts. Sokol is an oldest aircraft plant in Russia with more than 80- years' experience. The plant repairs and modernizes MiG-31, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Company (MiG). Sokol and MiG are parts of the United Aircraft Corporation.

Russia receives new Mi-8AMTSh 'Hip' helicopters - IHS Jane's 360

Russia receives new Mi-8AMTSh 'Hip' helicopters
Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
02 September 2014

The first consignment of a recent order of 40 Mil Mi-8AMTSh 'Hip' helicopters has been delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD), Russian Helicopters announced on 1 September.

The handover of the four Mi-8AMTSh platforms marks the start of the delivery phase of a RUB12.6 billion (USD340 million) contract that was signed in August 2013. The 40 new helicopters will add to the 30 already known to be fielded by Russia (the status of an additional order for 30 helicopters is not clear).

According to Russian Helicopters, the upgrades to the Mi-8AMTSh are primarily geared towards reducing the life-cycle maintenance needs of the venerable 'Hip'. The new helicopter now has a time between overhaul of 2,000 hours (up from 1,500 previously) and a service life of 35 years (up from 25), while operating costs across the helicopter's life-cycle have been reduced by about 25% to 30% compared with the basic model, the company said.

Specific improvements include the fitting of the more powerful and reliable Klimov VK-2500 engines and an upgraded and strengthened transmission, a new TA-14 auxiliary powerplant, additional fuel tanks, ballistic protection for the crew and systems, a night-vision goggle compatible cockpit, modern navigation equipment, the option for a nose-mounted thimble radome, and chin-mounted electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) turret.

As well as enhanced systems, the Mi-8AMTSh can also accommodate new weapons systems on 'wing' pylons, such as 9M343/9M39 Igla 'Grouse' air-to-air missiles, 9M114/9M114M Shturm-V 'Spiral' air-to-surface missiles, 23 mm gun pods, and B8V20A rocket pods equipped with S-8 80 mm unguided rockets.

Designated Mi-171Sh internationally, the Mi-8AMTSh has also been sold to Croatia, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, and Peru.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on 24 February, citing Kiev's failure to implement the Minsk agreements and threats to withdraw from the Budapest Memorandum. The Russian Armed Forces destroyed a significant portion of Ukraine’s military airfields, as well as military aircraft, during the first day of the operation.
Four Ukrainian Su-27 (NATO reporting name: Flanker-B) fighter jets, one Mil Mi-8 (NATO reporting name: Hip) helicopter, and a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB-2 drone were shot down in the area around Zhytomir on 5 March, the Russian Defence Ministry has stated.
Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that the four jets were downed in an aerial fight, while air defences on the ground took down the Mi-8 helicopter, Bayraktar drone, as well as an Su-25 (NATO reporting name: Frogfoot) fighter jet. Additionally, the Russian Armed Forces destroyed five Ukrainian radars and two Buk M-1 air defence systems, Konashenkov said.
A significant part of the Ukrainian Air Force was destroyed during the first days of Russia’s special operation, which was launched on 24 February by President Vladimir Putin. 69 jets were destroyed on the ground in airstrikes on military airfields, the Defence Ministry said. Another 21 jets were shot down in the air, the ministry noted.
Apart from that, the Russian military has shot down 59 Ukrainian drones, destroyed 748 tanks and other armoured vehicles, 76 multiple launch rocket systems, and 274 units of artillery since the start of the operation, Konashenkov revealed.
Russia launched the special operation citing Kiev's failure to fulfil the Minsk agreements and stop shelling the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR). President Vladimir Putin said that the goals of the operation are the demilitarisation of Ukraine via the removal of weapons that endanger Russia and assuring its neutrality, as well as the de-Nazification of the country.

The return of the Su-35 fighter of the Russian Aerospace Forces to the base with a stock of air-to-air missiles may indicate problems with the presence of combat aircraft of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Yesterday, 09:41

The Russian Ministry of Defense showed footage of the combat use of Su-35 fighters as part of a special military operation in Ukraine. The report of the defense department says that Russian fighters are performing the tasks of intercepting air targets over Ukraine, as well as carrying out strikes with precision weapons on military infrastructure.

Among other things, Russian Su-35s are involved in operations to counter enemy aerial reconnaissance, as well as to prevent the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from inflicting strikes on Russian troops, including with the use of UAVs.

The use of the Su-35 is carried out at different altitudes, including low and medium.

The agency's report indicates that the avionics (on-board radio-electronic equipment) of the Su-35 fighters allows the use of aviation ammunition with high accuracy.

On the footage provided by the Russian Defense Ministry, you can see how the Su-35 fighter returns to its base airfield after completing a combat mission. At the same time, a supply of air-to-air missiles remains on its suspensions.

This may indicate that the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has at least problems with the availability of aviation, and at the maximum - that military aviation, which would also coordinate its actions in the airspace over Ukraine, 11 days after the start of the special operation near Kiev regimen is almost non-existent. However, we must not forget that the NATO countries do not leave ideas for the supply of aircraft to Ukraine - first of all, we are talking about the supply of drones, the damage from the use of which definitely cannot be underestimated.

The Ministry of Defense named the number of Ukrainian combat aircraft destroyed per day
Yesterday, 12:39

Russian Aerospace Forces continue to control the airspace over Ukraine, destroying the remnants of Ukrainian aviation. Attacks are delivered both on enemy airfields and on aircraft in the air.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, announced at a regular briefing, over the past day, the Russian Aerospace Forces and Air Defense Forces shot down 14 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force, including three fighters and one attack aircraft. The bulk of the downed vehicles are various drones, which our pilots and anti-aircraft gunners "grounded" in the amount of 8 units. Two combat helicopters Mi-24 were also shot down.

Last night, fighter aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces and military air defense shot down three more Su-27s of the Ukrainian Air Force in the Poltava region, one Su-25 in the Gostomel region, two Mi-24 helicopters in the Makarov region and eight unmanned aerial vehicles, including "Bayraktar TB-2

- said Igor Konashenkov.

Ground attack aircraft also did a great job, hitting three Ukrainian Buk M1 air defense systems and two radars. On Sunday evening, the Russian military department announced the practical destruction of Ukrainian military aviation, taking into account the planes and helicopters already destroyed on the ground and in the air.

Despite this, Kyiv does not stop trying to get Soviet-made fighters and attack aircraft from the West, which are still in service with the air forces of a number of NATO countries. We are talking about the MiG-29 and Su-25, since Ukrainian pilots are trained to fly only on Soviet aircraft. Kyiv is not satisfied with the offer to supply Western-made aircraft, since there is no one to fly them. https://topwar.ru/193187-minoborony...hennyh-za-sutki-boevyh-samoletov-ukrainy.html

A video has been circulated on Telegram channels showing the consequences of a strike on a Ukrainian MiG-29 parking lot in Ivano-Frankivsk.

The footage shows a crater on the territory of the airfield and damaged warships. According to some reports, several fighters, as well as the infrastructure of destruction facilities.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an action to protect the world population of Donbass. After that, the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country's military infrastructure and of martial law throughout the state, also announced a break by Kiev, revealing their relations with Moscow and recalling the embassy of Ukrainian diplomats.

The Russian Defense Ministry clarifies that the army does not use air, missile or artillery strikes on the cities of Ukraine. The civilian population of the country is not in danger. Highly effective means are disabled military infrastructure.

On February 21, Putin approved decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as treaties of friendship, government, and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.

The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR spoke about intense shelling by the Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy impact. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians on the territory of Russia.

Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a military mixture against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refuse to recognize the results of the coup d'état and the new power in Ukraine. In this situation, Kyiv blames Moscow. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not an accidental conflict.

For more up-to-date videos and details about the situation in Donbass, watch the Izvestia TV channel.

Ukraine continues to lose combat aircraft, airfield infrastructure and air defense. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, on the morning of March 6, the Russian Armed Forces delivered a precision strike on the Ukrainian military airfield in Starokonstantinov. It is also reported that over the past day, fighters of the Russian Aerospace Forces and air defense forces shot down 4 Ukrainian Su-27s and one MiG-29 near Zhytomyr

It is difficult to pretend to be a serious analysis, but as an attempt to generalize the events of the day.
At the beginning of the operation, the RF Armed Forces delivered cruise missile strikes at the main enemy air bases. Practically at all the main air bases of Ukraine, hits were recorded on infrastructure facilities such as fuel depots (judging by fires), in some cases - on aircraft parking lots. There are no special details on the results, but it is most likely premature to talk about the destruction of Ukrainian aviation.
Only four episodes currently have photos and videos of the affected aircraft.

The color of the cap of the cockpit corresponds to that adopted in the Air Force of Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported about the destruction of the Ukrainian Su-27 fighter at the parking lot of the Ozerny airfield in the Zhytomyr region by a strike of high-precision weapons of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to the portal avia.pro, the attack aircraft intended to attack the Russian forces involved in a special military operation in the Donbass.

The publication notes that before the crash, the Ukrainian attack aircraft, apparently, managed to destroy the pontoon-bridge vehicles sent to the site of the restoration of the crossing that was blown up by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Who exactly shot down the plane, the publication does not specify: the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has not yet confirmed the information about the involvement of the Russian military in this.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense reported that the vast majority of Ukrainian Air Force facilities were disabled by powerful air and missile strikes. Which of the bases managed to survive is not specified.

According to the official representative of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Major General Igor Konashenkov, among the 975 destroyed objects of the military infrastructure of Ukraine - 23 command posts and communication centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, three radar posts, 31 anti-aircraft missile systems S-300, "Buk M-1" and " Osa”, 48 radar stations. Also, eight combat aircraft and seven helicopters, 11 unmanned aerial vehicles, two Tochka-U tactical missiles were shot down.

The day before, the Ministry of Defense announced the continuation of attacks on Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities, and also reported on the success of the offensive. According to the agency, the Russian military hit 821 objects of the military infrastructure of Ukraine, including 14 military airfields, 19 command posts and communication centers, 24 S-300 and Osa anti-aircraft missile systems, 48 radar stations. At the same time, data on the losses of the Russian army are officially classified.

Russia launched a military operation to "demilitarize Ukraine" in the early hours of Thursday, February 24. In a televised address to the Russians, President Vladimir Putin explained what is happening as the need for "decisive and immediate action," since "the people's republics of Donbass have asked for help."

Western countries have imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with the military operation in Ukraine.
