Russian Air Force to Get 60 Mi-28UB Helicopters by 2020

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 10 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Defense Ministry will procure up to 60 Mi-28UB helicopters to improve the training of pilots for Mi-28N gunships, the Air Force commander said.

The Mi-28UB is a combat training variant of the Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopter that can be operated both from the pilot's cockpit and the flight instructor's cockpit as it is equipped with a dual hydromechanical flight control system.

"We will purchase four to six [Mi-28UB] helicopters for each unit that has Mi-28N in service," Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said Friday after attending a Mi-28UB demonstration flight at Rostvertol plant, which manufactures both Mi-28N and Mi-28UB helicopters.

"We are planning to procure up to 60 [Mi-28UB] helicopters until 2020," Bondarev said, adding that the new version would significantly speed up and improve pilot training.

Mi-28N is the latest modification of the Mi-28 Havoc attack helicopter. It has been designed to conduct hunter-killer missions against main battle tanks, helicopters, ground forces, and fortified defense positions in any weather conditions, day and night.

Russia's Defense Ministry has said it is planning to procure between 45 and 67 Mi-28Ns, and to fully replace the Mi-24 Hind helicopters with Mi-28Ns in the Armed Forces by 2015.

Перспективный вертолетный двигатель будет создан в 2015 г | РИА Новости

Promising helicopter engine will be created in 2015
First prototype of a new generation engine for future high-speed helicopter will be created in 2015, told RIA Novosti on Thursday, executive director of JSC "Klimov" Alexander Vatagin.

"According to the plans in 2014 will be continued testing of key components and systems perspective motor, so that in 2015 to manufacture and test the engine demonstrator and start complex certification work" - said Vatagin.

He noted that, according to the plan, the company will start mass production of a promising new generation helicopter engine in 2018.

In 2013, the Russian Ministry of Industry announced a tender for carrying out scientific research and development of project documentation for establishing the planned high-speed helicopter (PSV), the maximum price the government contract is 2.5 billion rubles. Holding "Helicopters of Russia" and the Defense Ministry of Industry jointly last year opened a research work on the creation of this helicopter.

Creation program PSV goes in two directions: first - a slight increase in speed rotorcraft (about 25% compared with existing technologies). The second direction - creating an aircraft that has already significantly exceeds today's helicopters in terms of speed and a number of other key features. Promising high-speed helicopter will need to have a maximum takeoff weight to 10.6 tons, passenger capacity - 21 people, and a practical range - 900 kilometers. The maximum cruising speed of PSV must be 340-360 kilometers per hour, and the cost of its operation should be 20-25% lower.

JSC "Klimov" is engaged in the development, manufacture and servicing of engines for most helicopters "Miles" and "Kamov" jet engines for fighter aircraft, has its own design office, production and experimental bases. "Klimov" is the only Russian developer of gas turbine engines of a full cycle: from the center line of the certification.

MiG-31: A fighter ahead of its time

Russian airspace is guarded by a unique aircraft, which can intercept any target, from hidden cruise missiles to satellites – day and night, rain or shine, and at any speed. Defence analysts believe that no other aircraft of its kind would be able to compete with the Russian MiG-31 in the next 10 to 15 years.
Arctic barrier
The two-seat supersonic fighter- interceptor, referred to as Foxhound by NATO, is the first Soviet combat aircraft of the fourth generation. In the late 1960s, there were two reasons to build this aircraft, internal and external. On the one hand, the US put strategic cruise missiles and the FB-111 bomber into service. These could fly over the North Pole and reach boundaries of the USSR at low altitudes, following the relief and avoiding coming into sight of our satellites. On the other hand, there was a gap in the radar barrier in the North of Russia. In order to fill this gap and to meet any 'uninvited guests,' Moscow decided to launch an aircraft capable of monitoring air space over a wide front and altitude range. These aircraft were the new MiGs, built in the Artem Mikoyan Experimental Design Office (today the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG). After their assignment to combat duty, American reconnaissance aircraft started to fly less frequently across the boundaries of the USSR. Now, when the issue of protecting Russian interests in the Arctic region has become increasingly important, the MiG-31 "Arctic" experience can be of great service to the northern formations of the Russian Army.

Russia Reinforces Armenian Base With Overhauled MiG-29 Fighter Jets

MOSCOW, March 4 (RIA Novosti) – Russia has strengthened its airbase in Armenia with a batch of overhauled MiG-29 fighter jets, a military official said Tuesday. Russia's 3624th Air Base at the Erebuni airport in Yerevan previously hosted at least 16 MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets operating under the framework of air defense agreements concluded between the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States. "A batch of fourth-generation MiG-29 multirole fighter jets has been put in service with the Russian airbase at Eerebuni after an extensive overhaul," a spokesman for the Southern Military District, Col. Igor Gorbul, said without specifying the number of aircraft. The Erebuni air base is part of Russia's 102nd military base in Gyumri, near Armenia's border with Turkey.
The Russian military said in January that in addition to fighter jets the Erebuni base will soon host a helicopter squadron armed with at least 18 attack and military transport choppers.

Russia boosts military, global arms spending fall

For the first time in 10 years, Russia last year spent a bigger share of its overall economy on arms investments than the U.S. as it seeks to bolster its military capability, a Swedish arms watchdog said Monday.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said Russia increased its military spending in 2013 by 4.8 percent to $87.8 billion, representing 4.1 percent of its gross domestic product. Meanwhile, global military spending fell by 1.9 percent in 2013 to $1.7 trillion, as many Western countries cut arms investments following the financial crisis.

SIPRI program director Sam Perlo-Freeman told The Associated Press the increase in Russia is in line with the country's 2011-2020 State Armaments Plan that aims to spend over $700 billion on modernizing Russia's military equipment, technology and industry.

"The goal of building up military capability has been seen as more urgent since the Georgia war in 2008, which revealed serious shortcomings in Russia's military technology and readiness," he said.

However, he said economic constraints may prevent Russia from increasing military spending any faster than was previously planned, despite the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine.

"The economy is a key factor, including especially oil and gas prices, and many observers believe that the State Armaments Plan is based on over-optimistic economic projections, so that this may act as something of a constraint on the rate of increase of military spending," he said.

The U.S. cut military outlays by 7.8 percent in 2013, but remained the biggest arms investor in the world in real terms by spending $640 billion, or 3.8 percent of GDP. The fall is mainly a result of the end of the war in Iraq, the beginning of the drawdown from Afghanistan and effects of automatic budget cuts, SIPRI said.

China increased military investments by 7.4 percent to $188 billion, and is the second biggest arms spender in the world.

SIPRI said a pattern has been established in recent years whereby military spending is falling in North America, Europe and Oceania while it has increased in other regions.

"In some regions, such as those surrounding China and Russia, there is a danger of military spending growth contributing to a ratcheting up of tensions," Perlo-Freeman said.

He said the lower military spending in Western Europe likely means a diminution of countries' abilities to intervene overseas, but said the Ukraine crisis could turn around that trend, especially in countries close to Russia.

Russian Air Force to Receive 16 New MiG Fighters

MOSCOW, April 15 (RIA Novosti) –
The Russian Defense Ministry has signed a $470 million contract with the MiG corporation for the delivery of 16 advanced MiG-29 SMT fighters, the ministry said Tuesday. The company had earlier confirmed the deal in an interview with RIA Novosti, but did not specify its value. "The value of the contract, including the ground support and test equipment, is more than 17 billion rubles. The contract is a strategic measure for maintaining the combat readiness of the
lightweight fighter fleet," the Defense Ministry said in the statement. As of last year, the Russian Air Force had 28 of the fighters, a single-seat upgraded version of the MiG-29 SM fighter capable of using smart air-to-surface weapons. The MiG-29 SMT, developed in the first half of the 2000s, features add-on fuselage fuel tanks for extended range, special radar- absorbing paint, and can be outfitted with supersonic and anti- ship missiles. The plane can perform 'blind' bombing runs at night, as well as reconnaissance missions. The Defense Ministry also plans to sign a contract for the delivery of 4++ generation MiG-35S fighters after 2016, with about 100 to be built in the near future, a
spokesman for the ministry told reporters Tuesday.
The move will help optimize the ratio of light and heavy fighters in the Russian Air Force, the ministry said.

Russian Paratroopers Receive Newest Verba Shoulder-Fired Missiles

The Russian Airborne Forces have started receiving the newest Verba man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) equipped with an automated fire control system that has no foreign rival, military spokesman Yevgeny Meshkov said Friday.

"The surface to air-missile regiment of the Ivankvsky Airborne Forces division is the first to have started receiving and studying the modern system of air defense battle," Meshkov said.

The systems automatically provide information on the air environment, fix the target and command a strike against the target within several seconds. "This gives time to an AA sniper armed with the Verba MANPADS to prepare for the meeting and hit the target beforehand," he said.

These systems exclude the human factor, while saving ammunition and increasing the effectiveness of air-defense sub-elements. "An automated control system over the battle allows finding an air target, defining its characteristics and sharing targets between AA snipers and fire means, taking into consideration their location," Meshkov said.

A commander of the SAM regiment, Col. Andrei Musiyenko said modern air defense battles are highly mobile and dynamic confrontations with the usage of aerial warfare weapons, demanding modern armament and operational control.

"Until now, the control over air defense battle in Airborne Forces divisions was not automated and the time elapsed following the major commander finding the target and ordering an AA sniper to launch the missile took from 3 to 5 minutes," he said.

The process has become more than 10 times faster with the new systems.

MOSCOW -- Today the Sukhoi Company has transferred to the Russian Air Force the first batch of serial Su-34 front-line bombers under the 2014 State Defense Order. The aircraft took off the airfield of the Novosibirsk aircraft plant and headed to the place of their deployment. The new bombers were delivered according to the 2012 State Contract for a large batch of Su-34s. The 5-year State Contract for Su-34s signed in 2008 was fulfilled last December. The large government contracts for Su-34s were signed with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in 2008 and 2012. Those are the largest orders for combat aircraft under the State Armaments Program for the years 2011-2020. Their fulfillment guarantees a stable work load of the Sukhoi Company and its partner- companies in the long run. The Su-34 aircraft currently in service with the Air Force demonstrate high performance. The features of the new generation frontline bomber include, in particular, an increased up to 4000 km flight range, a maximum speed of up to 1900 km/h, 8 tons payload. The Su-34 has a new weapon system and an air refueling system. Sukhoi is a United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) subsidiary.
