The west would love to point nukes at Russia and Belarus from Ukraine? This is the existential threat Russia fears.

How is it different from pointing nukes at Russia and Belarus from Baltic states? Same distance to Moscow and St. Petersburg just over the border as a sweet bonus.

By that Logic why expand NATO to ukraine, I am sure distances from Latavia to Moscow is probably the same as from ukraine. Why does west want to surround russia with Nato.

Its not just nukes, Putin was talking about anti missile battery placed right next to russia. A ICBM is slow in boost phase, a anti missile interceptor is much much faster. So they will not even have second strike capability. Its not just land based anti missile systems, Aegis equipped ships are also surrounding russia, including the black sea.

You talk as if Russia was ready to go to war against US for "Saving" India.. Soviet Union wasn't ready to fight US. Just as US wasn't ready to go to war against India to defend Psycho Pakistan.. The much hyped 1971 Indo Soviet Friendship treaty and Soviet Deterrence patrol in Indian Ocean doesn't mean Soviet Navy being ready to attack US Navy for India's sake. Barking dogs don't bite. IN 1971 both Soviet Navy and US Navy were barking dogs, hence Soviet strategy worked and helped India by not having to plan for a direct US Navy interference..

The same 1978 Soviet Vietnam Friendship treaty could not deter China and save Vietnam against the Chinese Biting dog during the Chinese 1979 Invasion of Vietnam, because all that Soviet Union was ready to do was take the low cost route of barking against China and US, and was not ready to go to war against China or the US.

Bullshit. Stop being so anti Russian all the time that you lose perspective. Russian deployment necessitated that China divert her resources and soldiers to the north border. And USSR wanted India to be pro Soviet so that was an opportunity that Soviets exploited. US repaid the favor with being friendly towards China. That was the reason why Nixon went to China. When USSR entered into Afghanistan, her focus was there and couldn't pay enough attention to Vietnam, that's when China seized the opportunity and attacked Vietnam. Don't be so naive and too believing about the American narrative when it comes to USSR/Russia.

From my point of view, there are 3 main reasons for why the Sino-Vietnamese war happened

First, Deng Xiaoping's wanting to consolidate his power by showing how much command/control he had over the army.

Second, punishment to Vietnam for siding with Soviet Union and toppling pro China Khmer Rougue but not wanting to escalate the war into a big conflict with Soviet Union nor being perceived by America as a destabilizer of the region. Thus the war was declared by China to be limited war. To China, the looting of border provinces and the destruction of their infrastructures were good enough punishment, no need for the destruction of the main Vietnamese military force stationed near the capital.

Third, convincing America that China was no longer part of Eastern Block led by Soviet Union and getting accepted into the trade order of the Western block.

In Deng Xiaoping time, the war was a success. All 3 strategic objectives (for internal & international politics) were fulfilled.

However in modern times, the war is a stain. As China seek to be a major arms exporter, this war does not provide much credibility to their arms. Also the war made people question Chinese's capability in fighting on a terrain that is foreign to them. Furthermore the war provided embarassing photos/materials of Chinese army for anti China folks. (images of chinese casualties & fatalities)

In 1979, CCP and Deng Xiaoping won the war. In 2023, its Vietnam who have the last laugh.

You can see that this war is mentioned on academic papers by military people but is never mentioned by Western media. The intel sharing between the Yanks and the Chinks to strike on Vietnam was dirty stuff.

Plenty of videos of blow up western tanks by houthis in yemen with clone weapons. Against modern Russian ATGM and anti tank weapons, even a US spec M1 abram will be blown. RPG 7 in iraq itself penetrated US spec M1 A2.
