US Navy Sabre rattling and Soviet Union Saber rattling back is not the same as US fighting a war against India, where US Navy too will suffer some losses.. How many wars have been fought between PLA Navy and US Navy when both navies have been sabre rattling and jerking off at close proximity in South China sea for 2 decades..

SAVING is too big a word, and takes credit off Indian polity and Indian forces of the day.

What the Soviet Union did however was take India's mind off from deterring US Navy, and instead concentrate fully on banging Pakistan..

I wonder of any of those brand new Foxtrot/Kalvari 1's were ever deployed to 'keep an eye' on the US fleet? Would make an interesting account.

I think there is no defeating Russia, either Ukraine will lose or there will be a status quo ante bellum indeed either way Ukraine will become Afghanistan of Europe with both west and russia funding, textbook Vietnam scenario. That clown has no sense of geopolitical comprehension, when you're between two giant opposing powers it is better for you to keep things stable and mind your own god damned thing. Chinese and Russia almost always voted the same in UN security council. so what was the split??
something created by the west to open China and their markets and cheap labor??
Idealogically Chinese and soviet union never split relations may have soured and border issues existed
but it wasn't a big deal as it would be today. Chinese used the split as an opportunity
to further their nuclear ambitions.

China wasn't buying any weapons during the sino-soviet split period. They were literally fortifying each other's borders.
Most of chinese maal of Russian origin is from post Soviet breakup or from the early 1960s period.
They literally killed hundreds of each other's troops in the Ussuri incidents so i would say its not a minor border dispute.

Ukraine is headed for Syrian fate. Mark my words, the US is going to seek a quick resolution due to election year issues coming up next year ( biden needs this conflict gone or decided in USA's favour to curry votes and justify hundreds of billions spent on ukraine to the voters), which will lead to a fracturing of the Ukrainian army, ala Syrian rebel army style. Russia is going to capitalise on this, to build novorossiya, then use the splinters of kiev's armies against it in a dealocked war, much like USA did in Syria to keep Assad perpetually occupied.

Man I really want some offensives (from either side, though Russia doesn't seem in any hurry or mood to launch one) to get going. It has become very boring to discuss the same things again and again. But more than that this stalemate isn't going anywhere unless something big happens and I would like very much to see where this goes- both as a student of history and military strategy. Finally, if the war ends quicker its better for everyone I suppose.

IN 1971 both Soviet Navy and US Navy were barking dogs, hence Soviet strategy worked and helped India by not having to plan for a direct US Navy interference..

The same 1978 Soviet Vietnam Friendship treaty could not deter China and save Vietnam against the Chinese Biting dog during the Chinese 1979 Invasion of Vietnam, because all that Soviet Union was ready to do was take the low cost route of barking against China and US, and was not ready to go to war against China or the US.

Threatening an attack is far far different from carrying out an attack on a Carrier group.. naive guy.. It's that simple..
A Soviet sub that is detectable to a carrier strike group and is in weapons range is a dead duck if it makes any move to fire a weapon.. So, it was all posturing.. If a sub wants to fire a weapon, you always remain undetectable..
