In terms of numbers, the English win, simply because the population of the subcontinent is/was far larger than that of the americas. And while killing due to disease spread is ancillary, the english actually actively & deliberately perpetrated genocide. There's a vast difference between you coming in contact with me, when i am sick and you dying, versus me planning & executing a series of actions to kill you.

France is not a friend. Never was, never will be. We are not enemies or competitors, hence, we can do business together. We have little to no converging interests, outside of nebulous 'islamic terrorosm issues' and weapons trade. Even then, as far as the former goes, we hardly have any convergence in action, since we face islamic terrorism from vastly different sources: ours is home grown & pakistan sponsored, theirs is home grown and imported from west africa. And as far as weapons go, France has a maximum 15-25 year window to sell us major stuff, before India pulls a China and becomes self sufficient in most capital weapons assets.

And once that happens, France and India will have very little convergence in goals.
The reason for this, is simple: once all is said and done, France is NOT an independent player in internatonal politics: its a dog of Murrica. Sure, its the least trained dog & most likely to veer outta Yankee agenda, but its still a NATO dog of the yankees, as Ukraine war is making it abundantly clear.
And yankees are our 2nd biggest adversary, slated to be our biggest adversary in the future, as they view us as their clear-cut competition for leader of the democratic world, which is why US will pull out all stops to dismember India and keep it chaotic. This is where its poodles- UK and Germany ( the best trained yankee poodles) and France ( the poodle with a glitch in the matrix) will come in handy.

Effectively, we only have ONE long term friend, with whom we have zero clash of goals & agenda, who is an independent pole of power and has proven to be a long term ally/friend/well wisher of India : Russia.

And as such, France has precious little to offer to India,outside of military tech.

In my opinion, we should treat France EXACTLY the same way we treat Israel : a business transaction partner with some coordination against Islamist terrorism, but steer well clear of their geopolitics and guard against their meddling in Indian affairs.
