Very interesting and very dangerous possible situation for Ukraine's southern flank. Although I really don't know if Russia will abandon Lyman, I do know that the cost will be too high for Ukraine. Taking back land is important, but when the cost is too high it's not worth it. This reminds me so much of operation Barbarossa. What were the goals of the Germans? What was more important, taking cities, or destroying the Red army? Hitler was more interested in destroying the Red army. Heinz Guderian thought it was more important to take cities like Moscow, and Leningrad. I believe the Russians are more interested in destroying the Ukrainian army than to take cities. I'm not saying that taking cities is unimportant to them. The problem for Hitler was that German intelligence vastly underestimated Russian army reserves. Had they known this the better strategy would of been to take cities/territories especially the Caucuses. Since it is known that Ukraine only has a limited number of reserves, I think the Russian strategy of destroying the Ukraine army is the correct one. Plus, since Kiev, and Kharkov are not producing hardly any weapons like Russian cities did, it becomes a much clearer logical decision.

Gazprom is still an available option and we already know putin does not mind dragging this war on if he hasnt sent active duty troops yet. I guess this might offer some benefit to Russia depending how fast Ukraine will get taken care of.

I do not think at this point Russia will want to send gas through Ukraine and Poland if Russia has to pay transit fees for it.
