MOSCOW: Russia will counter Nato's US-led missile defence programme by deploying new strike weapons capable of piercing the shield, President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday. Putin told defence officials that by developing defences against ballistic missiles Washington aims to "neutralize" Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent and gain a "decisive military superiority."

He said that Moscow will respond by developing "strike systems capable of penetrating any missile defences." Putin's statement comes amid a severe strain in Russia's relations with the US and its Nato allies, which have plunged to the lowest point since the Cold War over the crisis in Ukraine.

For many years, the Kremlin has protested the US-led missile shield, voicing con cern that it could eventually become capable of intercepting Russia's nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles, thus eroding the strength of the nation's nuclear deterrent. Washington, in turn, has argued that the shield was aimed to fend off missile threats from nations such as Iran and North Korea.

Putin argued on Tuesday that the US has kept working on the missile shield despite Iran's deal with six world powers that has curbed its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from international curbs. "So, references to the Iranian and the N Korean nuclear missile threat just have served to cover up the true plans, and their true task is to neutralize nuclear potential of other nuclear powers, ... Russia in particular," he said.

If Putin can develop S-400 to shoot down US F-22, then he can build a system to pierce the US built defence shield.

US has been foul mouthing Russia for the last seventy years, only to be humbled as more information trickles down.

Economically US has done everything to humble Russia by keeping the oil prices low. That has not killed Russia. The Russians have come up with other ways to keep afloat.

Military hardware, the Russian Weapons are proving par excellence as is proven in last two months in their military strikes in Syria. They have turned the war around which US has been trying for the last many years without success.

Russian Navy to Receive World’s First Hypersonic Anti-Ship Missile
By Arthur Dominic Villasanta | Dec 26, 2016 06:39 AM EST

Two aging Russian Navy battlecruisers will be outfitted with the anti-ship version of the world's first hypersonic missile, the 3K-22, which carries Zircon (or Tsirkon) 3M22 hypersonic warheads. This hypersonic missile will also arm Russian ballistic missile submarines.

With a claimed speed of Mach 5 or 6,200 km/h, the 3K-22 has a range of 450 kilometers. The weight of the 3M22 Zircon warhead remains unknown but will likely be heavier than the 200 kg warhead on India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

It's widely believed BrahMos II is the export version of the 3M22 Zircon. BrahMos II, which will have a speed of Mach 7 (8,600 km/h), will be the world's fastest cruise missile when it enters service with the Indian Armed Forces some eight years from now.

Production of the 3M22 Zircon is expected to begin in 2017. Tests of this warhead began last March.

Today, however, the 3M22 Zircon is scheduled to be added to the missile armament of the RFS Admiral Nakhimov (080), a Kirov-class heavy missile cruiser that entered service with the Soviet Navy in 1988. The Nakhimov has been undergoing extensive refitting since 2015.

The Nakhimov should re-enter service in 2018 at the earliest.

Another Kirov-class heavy missile cruiser, the RFS Pyotr Velikiy (099), will be outfitted with the 3M22 Zircon in late 2019 as part of a large scale refit. She was commissioned into the Soviet Navy in 1998 and is part of the fleet that escorted the Russian aircraft carrier, RFS Admiral Kuznetsov (063), to the Mediterranean Sea in October.

The Russians say their hypersonic weapons can defeat all existing types of U.S. anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs), which are designed to intercept Russian ICBMs with more predictable ballistic trajectories.

On the other hand, a hypersonic missile can maneuver in flight to evade American ABMs. Russia developed a new type of fuel, Detsilin-M, that delivers 20 percent more power than existing rocket fuels to power the Zircon.
