Russia Tests New Amphibious Armored Vehicle - BTR-82AM

A new amphibious armored personnel carrier (APC), the BTR-82AM, is undergoing a series of trials at the Russian Black Sea Fleet's naval infantry facility in Sevastopol, fleet spokesman Capt. 1St Rank Vyacheslav Trukhachev said on Thursday.

During the trials, the BTR-82AM, which is due to replace the military's workhorse, the BTR-80, will cover "dozens of miles at sea" to test its stability and endurance when afloat, Trukhachev said.

The new APC incorporates an automatic 30-mm artillery system, which "has significantly enhanced the vehicle's firepower," he said.

The BTR-82AM is the latest APC modification of the BTR-80 8x8 wheeled carrier, production of which began in 1986.

It features improved armor, is equipped with the Glonass navigation system and has a more powerful engine of 300 hp.

Why tracked?

Both are needed for different terrains. Wheeled for onroading and offroading on firm ground. Tracked for desserts, marshes and rocky terrains.

Well this is what is required for the Indian army right now.

What would be the role of these in the IA and where and when will they be used?

One has to first know the specification of the equipment and then see where it will fit into our mission and doctrine to find it acceptable/ not acceptable is what I think would be the approach.

That is a perennial discussion within all armies with no clear verdict. Something like which came first - the egg or the hen.

However given that it is an amphibious vehicle, it will operate in marshy or boggy areas also being used for amphibious roles across water bodies and rivers. I take it that tracks do a better job in such areas than wheels because of traction.

If looks could kill then one could field some of our female political spokespersons on the frontline.

Well this will make a very good chassis for a light tank...a turret with an automatic loader or ATGMs mounted on it or LLQRMs will be a great addition in supporting mountain units.

This is more are less like the stryker platform so I think it will be really good in desert regions and the Kutch marshes along with the north eastern border near MYanmar and Bangladesh borders where the marshes will be a huge hurdle...

We should rapidly change from Truck Mobile Infantry to APC Mobile Infantry. But APC needs to be produced in India. We have all the ingredients. Will be big shame if we could not induct our own APC. Otherwise we know the story of our own "great" kingdoms who had to depend on imported Arab Horses and imported Guns
Army needs its own squadron of Medium to Heavy lift transport Helicopters attached with each strike corp.

In combat, one has to ensure that the strike element remains compact and not spread over in long trains!

Of course, there are the dangers of arty shell burst when troops are without overhead protection.

at the same time even OT-64's were retired these were also used 1971 war....

Sir how many troops carrier vehicles comprise of tatra? I thought for most of the deployments, Tata/Ashok Leyland Regular Cargo trucks modified to troops carrier were used as we saw during Kargil. These trucks offer zero protection to troops they carry from splinters or bullets. The point you make is also good point, so we need a vehicle which should not only provide good protection, mobility but also greater troop carrying capability. A good design exercise for Mech/Automobile Engineers
