Russia has just announced postponement of President Vladimir Putin's visit to India from November 1 to December 24. Whatever the Indian Government or the Indian media say about the postponement, most probably, Russia has snubbed India. Russia feels that India has neither fully appreciated what Russia has done for it nor India is grateful for the fact that Russia lived up to the saying "A friend in need is a friend indeed" while India betrayed Russia when it was going through a very difficult period.
India took an extremely opportunist stand when the Soviet Union collapsed. India took a 180 degree turn and jumped into the American Camp. It was Russia which used its veto when America and the western countries tried to condemn India on Kashmir, in the U.N. Again, it was Russia which supplied India with the weapons, while America was arming its arch rival Pakistan. Russia helped India with the nuclear material when America and the other western countries tried to choke India's nuclear supplies.

We can look at what happened in the Tarapur nuclear plant. Russia helped India in 2001 and 2006 while America and France tried to block the supplies. Russia helped India to maintain its integrity while America and the other western Countries were encouraging and helping the forces which wanted to disintegrate India.

Russia is particularly unhappy with India over India's stand on the Systema's investment and on the Koodankulam nuclear facility. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rodozin came to India to solve the disputes related to these issues so that the way can be paved for Putin's visit on November 1. However, no satisfactory solution was found and Putin became very unhappy and decided to postpone his visit to December 24.

Even though, some immediate events triggered the present conflict, yet the underlying cause for Russia's displeasure with India is the Indian tilt toward America. Russia feels that it helped India take on the trilateral challenge from America, Pakistan & China. For all practical purposes, we had an alliance of America, Pakistan & China against India and Russia. However, when Soviet Union collapsed, India instead of helping its time tested friend, not only completely abandoned it but actually joined the American Camp. Russia has been unable to forgive India for the betrayal of a friend in need.

If India wants to save it self form the impending disaster then it has no other option but to revive its traditional friendship with Russia. Russia has very close relations with china. Therefore, it is in a position to influence the Chinese policy toward India. In the present situation, it is inconceivable that China can attack India without consulting Russia. Russia and China both look at India as a potential ally against the American hegemony. Therefore, despite the differences with India, China sees India to be in the same boat as far as the two countries are the victims of the western arrogance and aggressive behaviour.

India should also realize that Russia has a very big card which it can use against India, the Pakistan card. If India does not reverse its tilt toward America then Russia can start supporting Pakistan just like China did. This will be a nightmare for India because it can face almost complete isolation in South Asia. India cannot afford to lose Russia as a friend. India should be really concerned about Russia's anger at India's pro-American policy. As soon as possible India should try to correct this tilt and convince Russia that it is genuinely interested in restoring the traditional friendship with Russia. Otherwise, the consequences can be disastrous.

As compared to India, China took a completely opposite stand.
....
China helped Russia to stand up on its feet.
Nonsense ! China was the one which was opportunistic post Soviet collapse . They hired a lot of their scientists and bought military hardware which was too expensive to maintain. India on the other hand was simply an investor and helped Russia recover.

Well, so did China and walked away from Russia (Soviet Union).

Reasons are plain and simple. Russia was backward and was not pursuing national goal of happiness and prosperity. It grew out dated from 1965 till 1989. The only thing which prospered in Russia of that era was military technology. India got its hands on this part of their prosperity and paid for it. It could nothing more. Hence India followed suit like China and walked away only gently, unlike China who broke away with a fight.

Yes, India paid back all diplomatic and political favours by Russia by champion the left leaning agenda in the non aligned movement. Russia was not being listened to by the newly independent nations of Asia and Africa. Sure they listened to India and followed India to the Russian camp. They still were in the Russian camp until Russia imploded internally.

Russia of the post 1989 with Yelstin in-charge was in the American camp. What was India and rest of the non-aligned movement supposed to do. They had to re-adjust their policies towards the Americans.

Now what has Putin done. He is back to the old ways and wants India and rest of the non-aligned back in the Russian camp. Too late for that. Moreover Russia has nothing to offer. It has itself become a third world country. They would be not able to balance their books except for oil export. The latter is going to finish on 40 years, then what.

Now let us count all the dis-favours they have done to India.

1. All military deals they have done to India in last 15 years have been crap with substandard and over priced hardware.

2. Deal on Vikramaditya and t-90 tanks have been a disaster.

3. Russia under pressure from the Americans refused to supply liquid rocket engine technology. It added 10 more years for India's development.

4. Ammunition for all the supplied guns has been priced three times the original price.

5. Leased nuclear submarine , India is doing them a favour. Otherwise it would have rusted away. Now they are collecting a huge sum of money.

6. India is buying Russians planes only to keep their factories operational. Otherwise lack of orders, these factories would close down.

And why this is happening. Because Russian quality has gone down. All capable people who built and designed the planes have left the field and replaced by less capable people. Also Russian business ethics have also gone down.

Instead that India count Russian favours from 1952 till 1989, it is Russian who have to start counting favours. If India does not buy their arms first and give them a decent rating then nobody else would buy.

Is it just me, or is there a theme in the press that India is being regularly "snubbed" by some other country.

Half the journalists in India will become unemployed if you expect genuine articles from them. This is one of the reason why even the govt never questions media on their wrong reporting... Less unemployment is one less thing for the govt to worry about :D

Cannot put the blame of all military deals failure on Russians or else we can presume that our defence planners are idiots of first grade.

Anyway the tech provided by Russia is top-notch i doubt UK will give us Nuclear Submarine, the acquisition of the SU-30 MKI is still something we can be really proud.

Russia always sold export versions not top notch versions they kept or gave to China 2 good examples:

compare Russia's t-90's to India's T-90's . Russia is delivering s-400 to China and Pakfa may also be
available to China in the future. what exactly exclusive top notch stuff are they selling to India?? The submarine
is one good example but like Gorshokov has proven they will milk India for the last dime. SU-30 MKI is more
of any Indian plane no other sukhoi is same as Indian version with Israeli and French collaboration.

Russia to export 600 Sukhoi PAK FA fifth generation jets - English pravda.ru

Also, Indonesia (6-12 units in the years 2028-2032), Iran (36-48 units in the years 2035-2040), Kazakhstan (12-24 units in the years 2025-2035), China (up to 100 units in the years 2025-2035), Libya (12-24 units in the years 2025-2030), Malaysia (12-24 units in the years 2035-2040), and Syria (12-24 units in the years 2025-2030).

Oh come on! Let us not take such small gestures as something like a snub.

Putin has other pressing matters as well and it is not like he's running away. Let him deal with important matters in his country and then come.

1) I don't think there is any snub. Too much being read into this.
2) india has attained a stature now which means if an Indian leader cancels a trip somewhere to express his displeasure should be considered as a snub of that country.

i feel that we should balance our relationship with both the Russkies and the Yankees.the Russkies are our time tested friend who have stood by us in nearly everything had had used its veto power to cancel any resolution made against India in UNSC.on the other hand the Yankees were anti Indian all through the cold war period and even helped our arch enemy by arming it to the teeth with all those state of the art weaponry.even now they are providing the pakis with all those F-16 blk-52 state of arts fighters.but that doesn't mean that we should maintain a cold relation with them, specially when we need them desperately to counter the chini threat!so what i prefer is to balance both relationships in such a manner that it won't make the Russkies feel that we are abandoning them for our new Yankee friend:cool:
