SOURCE: Tribune News Service The Army faces a peculiar situation in strengthening its offensive weaponry. While the Russians have backed out of providing technology transfer for rockets used in the Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), the Finance Ministry has refused to import the same rockets. As of now, the Army is left with Smerch rockets

WAKE UP CALL:mad:

- Why there is no news on Prahaar after the first test ??
- What if in future Russia refuses for TOT on SU-FGFA
- What if France turns back on full TOT in midway of MMRCA Rafale??
- What about Pinaka MK2 replacing the Smerch
- Is this not a wake up call for our Army and Airforce in particular if we depend too much on imports we will have weapons platform but to fire a missile from it we need permission from else where:mad::scared1:

form a team comprising of ppl from OFB,DRDO and ISRO and ask them to do a china on smerch rockets!!!!
This is what i missed in my thread, we bash china for reverse engineering Russian hardware like J-15 & J-11B . What is wrong in that it saves you from blackmail

Something is better than nothing :thumb:

This is one of the cases where Russia has refused ... It is an impact of India Looking for other nations for weaponary...
FGFA is a joint venture and it will be give and take No worries there...
Rafale cannot be trusted as they have the command ... There is a huge chance they might not share a few vital techs,,, Govt needs to proof it if they are going ahead with it....
This is simply a diplomatic tactic and nothing more ....
Yes if it sustains it will become a issue for us... but thsi can have a benefit ... Army will be forced to speed up many iduction of Indian Origin....

1) Good lesson and a gr8 smack for the Army. They better wake up and actively take part in indigenous weapon development.

2) If there is a clause calling for using specific Russian import rockets for Smerch? If not, copy the rockets and paint is in different color :p - err do some minute change and call it indigenous and use them.

3) Gradually give up dependence on Russia and actually give orders to other nations like France or Israel for the stuff that could have been Russian; and specifically start some kind of state to state deal - in small no. and for small but visible amount - with other countries.

4) Given Russian attitude toward both improving T-90 tanks and Smerch - a message should be sent unofficially that the new regime would view such acts not favourably.

5) When India cannot stop buying Russian weapons immediately, it can shrink the amount in next few years by involving Private sector for domestic production of alternative weapon systems. That will hurt Roboronexport, teaching them a lesson.

You are right in many ways

But is there a guarantee that Isreal & France will not do the same ??? Isreal was not able to sell AESA radar & Arrow missile denfence system vid pressure from USA

France or any other nation will never provide 100% TOT , there will be mole to use as bargain chip in future

Reverse engineering & Indegionsation is the way

Eg: Dhanush Howitzer:thumb:

I am not asking to start depending on Israel or France or anybody. But the Russians need to be taught a lesson and the lesson is the basic lesson of the business world. If you cannot satisfy your client/consumer, he will find some other seller. India IS one of the biggest buyer of Russian weapons, if she stopps gradually, how does Roboronexport thinks it can fill the gap?

This is another blow they have dealt to their reliability. I highly doubt the army has initiated the process for home production w/o some kind of unofficial assurances from the Russian side. In case of T-90 it was worse. The greedy army brass swallowed T-90 w/o air conditioning?!!!! And when they tried to improve it through DRDO by adding the much needed AC, the russians refused and offered an improved T-90S in much higher price?!

Good News. The Pinaka ER or Pinaka 2 which is under works will have a couple of less trials to go through.

Rather than lesson to be taught, there is a lesson to be learned: Self-dependence. The Russians will take care of themselves. Can India take care of itself ?

Oh I did mention that in my first post as well.

However, the level of self-dependence required in immediate future for sustaining the vast need of the armed forces simply cannot be supported by the domestic industry. It needs to build up and branch out to with more input from private sector. A lot of infrastructure needs to be built, which will take at least a decade if not more.

Good one answer is no , if Russia pulls out on all military co-operation with india it will cost us very dear

Foreign toys might be flashy but a buyer in mercy of seller a sanction would been major blow

Nothing surprising in that. Russians are proving extremely adept at digging their grave as far their future prospects in India are concerned.

But in the IA order of priority, this system can be replaced with other home made solutions fairly rapidly, though they would be a bit heavy on the wallet. And the Russians will realize it soon enough.

The Prahaar with its INS/GPS/GLONASS navigation is a far more versatile system than the Smerch, not to mention far more accurate. Sure it is more expensive unit wise, but a commander would rather call on a single Prahaar strike than a salvo of Smerch on a target. Over and above that, the heavier payload of the Prahaar allows a wider rabge of munitions to be carried to target.

Good riddance. Now if the same state continues,we might see Army forced to see Pinaka mk3 Inducted in army with a more accurate range of 120 Kms. Hope the situation continues.

Sometimes i feel that st Anthony habit of delaying many projects has given some extra time for DRDO to come out with finished products. Hopefully Indian army permanently says Bye to Russian smerch rockets.

it look like a simple multi barrel ricket system, what is so critical in this system that could not be manufactured by DORDO itself ? Pardon my ignorance

MRBL is anything but a SIMPLE technology. And DRDO is indeed developing Pinaka II which is supposed to be even better than Smerch.

But, currently we have Smerch in service, and without ammo they are useless, and therefore we need the ammo till they are retired.

small rectification pinaka in trial phase has range of 65 km where as smerch has a range of 90km ....
pinaka III is expected to be around 90-120km range ....

so we cannot say Pinaka II is better .... but in its range it is quite good.....
Hopefully soon it will be inducted
