Russia introduces new ship killer with an old name.

Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation (TMC) displayed an extensively redesigned Kh-35UE subsonic anti-ship missile at the MAKS 2009 aerospace exhibition.

Although the size and shape of the missile is virtually identical to that of current Kh-35E (SS-N-25 'Switchblade') rounds, extensive changes have been made within the fuselage.

One of the biggest problems with the Kh-35E design was that its engine is positioned centrally within the fuselage and the duct that feeds air from the inlet to the engine restricts the space available for the fuel tank.

According to TMC Director General Boris Viktorovics Obnosov, the new engine used in the Kh-35UE is about half the length of the original powerplant. It is mounted lower in the fuselage, so the intake duct is of reduced length and does not intrude into the fuselage. As a result, the entire fuselage mid-section can be used to carry fuel.
