Russia Floats Out 'Stealth' Submarine for Black Sea Fleet

A St. Petersburg-based shipyard on Thursday floated out the first of six Varshavyanka-class diesel-electric submarines to be delivered to the Black Sea Fleet in the next two years.

The much-anticipated delivery of these submarines, dubbed by the US Navy as "black holes in the ocean" because they are nearly undetectable when submerged, is a key part of Russia's naval strategy in the Mediterranean, where Moscow has recently deployed a permanent task force consisting of some 10 surface ships.

Construction of the Novorossiisk submarine started at Admiralty Shipyards in August 2010, followed by the Rostov-on-Don sub in November 2011 and the Stary Oskol in August 2012.

The Varshavyanka-class (Project 636) is an improved version of the Kilo-class submarines and features advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets.

These submarines are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.

The vessels, crewed by 52 submariners, have an underwater speed of 20 knots, a cruising range of 400 miles (electric propulsion) with the ability to patrol for 45 days. They are armed with 18 torpedoes and eight surface-to-air missiles.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet has not received new submarines for decades and currently operates only one boat – the Kilo-class Alrosa, which joined the navy in 1990.

Commenting on the floating out of the Novorossiisk, Russian naval expert Capt. 1st Rank (Ret.) Mikhail Nenashev said Russia needs at least 10 Varshavyanka-class submarines in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean to protect the country's interests in the region.

The expert specifically cited the presence of US warships equipped with the formidable Aegis integrated missile system in the Mediterranean and the deployment of US missile defenses in coastal countries around the region.

Russia's 'Stealth' Sub Joins Black Sea Fleet

MOSCOW, September 17 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's first Varshavyanka-class submarine, the Novorossiisk, has entered service with the Black Sea fleet, the Southern Military District's press service said Wednesday. The submarine currently remains at the Admiralty shipyard in St. Petersburg and will head to the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk after completing final trials with the Northern Fleet. The Defense Ministry has ordered a total of six Varshavyanka-class subs, dubbed "black holes in the ocean" by the US Navy because they are nearly undetectable when submerged. The Novorossiisk was laid down in August 2010. Back in August 2014, Russian Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov confirmed that two Project 636.3 diesel- electric submarines, the Novorossiysk and the Rostov-on- Don, would join the Black Sea Fleet by the end of the year. The construction of all six subs is to be completed by 2016. The submarines are primarily intended for anti-ship and anti- submarine missions in relatively shallow waters. They will be crewed by 52 submariners, have an underwater speed of 20 knots and a cruising range of 400 miles with the ability to patrol for 45 days.

Russia is building stealthy submarines to stealthily return to becoming a superpower once again?

Moving to the Black Sea is ominous since that area and the Middle Est is where all the world 'action' lies.

russia ,china are trying to overwhelm the US forces from all possible sides by taking control of the regions close to their country or territory,
so they may not focus their power on one place,

while they are busy in middle east, maybe russia and china trying to keep them busy in middle east and taking advantage of the chance which they may not get again ,

they gaining control of close by territories , so thats why the pull-out of US forces from iraq but then isis jumps in.:laugh::lol:

If its that good, why hasnt India considered it as a candidate for P75I?
I have always been a fan of Kilo. Its one of the best subs out there.
