It was expected. No surprises here. Even taking this draft to te SC was a futile exercise.

Interestingly, India changed sides and voted in favor of this resolution.
India had worked to get previous resolutions trashed, specially during its month old presidency over UNSC last year.
However, despite repeated calls the Syrian government has proven deaf to the international voices including the Indian one.
With continued violence by the State, it was increasingly difficult to shield the current regime against resolutions.
"Our support for the Resolution is in accordance with our support for the efforts by the Arab League for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through a Syrian-led inclusive political process," said India's permanent representative to the UN Hardeep Puri in a statement explaining the vote.
Regards,
Virendra

China will ultimately abstain on the Syrian issue, in the future. Assad is kaput, it's only a matter of time. As far as Russia is concerned, well, it'll remain a negligible obstruction. An amusing case of continued chest thumping (the only thing it can do)...

Backlash in Arab public opinion against Russia and China

Muslims in Jordan urge to boycott Russia, China goods
Jordanian Islamists on Sunday called on Muslims and Arabs to boycott Russian and Chinese products after the two countries vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Syria's regime over bloodshed.

"By vetoing the resolution, Russia and China have shown that they are taking part in the killing of Syrian people," Hammam Said, the leader of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, said on the group's website.

"All Muslims and Arabs should boycott Russian and Chinese products in order to support the Syrian people, who demand freedom and dignity. The vetoes were against all Arabs and Muslims."

Said described the crackdown, which rights groups say has killed more than 6,000 people since democracy protests broke out in March last year, as "almost the worst in recent history."

Russia and China on Saturday used their diplomatic muscle for the second time in four months to block a resolution condemning the violence.

The other 13 countries in the 15-member council voted for the resolution, proposed by European and Arab nations to give strong backing to an Arab League plan to end the crackdown.

The Russians and Chinese have to protect their interests. If the West wants regime change to place
their puppets in power why would Russia and China go along with it??

It is not surprising that Jordan is trying to show great solidarity with the West.

There are two reasons for that.

1. The demography of Syria's population is 74% Sunni Muslim, and 16% other Muslim groups, including the Alawi, Shi'a, and Druze, and 10% Christian, with a very small Syrian Jewish community.

Therefore, there is no love lost if the Shia regime of Syria falls.

A Sunni Govt will come into place, which will be like-minded. It will be a victory for the Sunnis in the historical Shia - Sunni divide!

2. Jordan is a vassal of the West.

The west also want a sunni govt to break the Iran-syria shia alliance.

Has anyone heard of condemnation of the killings by the so called Arab Muslim leaders of the Shias in Iraq and Bahrain?

Condemnation of sectarian convenience.

Total fraud and a hoax.

Russia alone was enough to block the draft resolution but China still seconded with her veto, despite that Sunni dominated GCC (S.A. in particular) is the top oil supplier for China. The posturing was meaningful. Russia has to ensure a Syria even without al Assad is still on her side.

No matter which way you look at it, 6000 people killed by govt. troopers and police forces within a year is not justified.

Assad shold have held multiparty elections as he had promised in September by now. His failure to hold free and fair elections is the main roadbloc. IF he has promised to hold elections, he should implement this asap.

China is very pragmatic in her approach.

Whatever decision she takes, the interest of China over everything else is kept paramount.

It is interesting that even though her oil comes from the Sunni Arabs, she vetoes on behalf of the Shia Arab!

There must be something more than what is known regarding this crisis.

One has to also see the numbers killed by the Yemenis, Gaddafi, Mubarak, and a host of other Sunni leaders to include the Sudan satraps.

They should have also held free and fair elections, but then did not!

Therefore, to hold Assad accountable alone for doing what comes natural to these beasts in the Middle East and North Africa would not be fair!

And why far, our good neighbour Pakistan, while they did hold an election, has no hesitation to kill their own too!

Leopards cannot change their spots!

You live by the Sword. You die by the Sword - old Arab saying!

Simple, because there's nothing they can do about it. So like what the old adage says: "if you cannot defeat them then join them..."

The uprising opposition are rebels with arms, killing or getting killed, fair enough (in part driven by religious bigots). The draft resolution by GCC+EU targeting Assad regime alone isn't aiming at ending the bloodshed.

A bit pessimistic - but - so far there hasn't been a genuine 'multiparty democracy' alive in Muslim countries. Even that 'good pupil' Turkey has undergone wrestles btwn 'secularist' military and 'fundamentalists even up to date, plus a few coups.

Let alone them...even the west the "bearers of freedom, democracy and human rights" didn't utter a single word when saudi army landed in bahrain and smashed the civilian protestors.

All of this is geopolitics and nothing to do with democracy.
