Rs 5,000cr lined up for UP growth

LUCKNOW: There is good news for UP. The Titanic state with its huge population of around 20 crore, may have yet another dose of around Rs 5,000 crore for the facelift of its tottering cities under the Centrally-sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The fund will be spent in seven major cities — Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Meerut, Agra and Mathura, which are already covered under the mission. At present, around Rs 8,000 crore are being allocated for these cities. Of it, 50 per cent is given in the form of grant by the Centre and the remaining is shared in the ratio of 20 per cent by the state government and 30 per cent by the concerned local bodies.

Of the various projects taken up under the mission at present, the most important one is the drinking water project in Agra, where the potable water is a big problem. The city, famous for its prized possession — the Taj Mahal —a piece of architectural marvel and epitome of love, built some 300 years ago by Emperor Shahjehan in fond memory of his beloved wife Mumtazmahal, is in dire need of potable water.

Currently, no other project, barring those already sanctioned and approved, are proposed for these cities though they are in dire need of them for betterment of their infrastructure. The reason: There is no fund available for the purpose. However, this would be possible now as the Centre has given a clear hint to consider another dose of grant for this purpose.

Asked to comment, principal secretary, urban development, Alok Ranjan, said: ‘‘The Union urban development ministry has moved a proposal to the World Bank seeking around Rs 10,000 crore loan for the urban infrastructure development.’’
