South Korea Starts Bidding Process For ROK Navy’s KDDX Future Destroyer

The future destroyer class will displace about 8,000 tons, and is expected to feature K-VLS only (no MK 41 cells) to deploy the latest missiles by LIG Nex1 such as the naval variant of the Hyunmoo-3C (Eagle-3 독수리-3) cruise missile with a range of 1,500 km as well as the naval variant of the Cheongung 3 (also known as L SAM) with a range of 150 km. It will also feature an advanced integrated mast (I-MAST) combining several sensors (TACAN, ESM, IFF, UHF, VHF, IRST) and radar arrays (in S and X bands) in a single mast.

Naval News learned during Seoul Airshow (ADEX 2019) that KDDX is set to feature a BAE Systems’ Mark 45 5 inch main gun with the new automated handling system (set to be installed first aboard UK’s Type 26 frigate).

South Korea plans to deploy enhanced submarines in the next five years.

An official from the South Korea Ministry of Defense said, we will develop new submarines that will be able to carry more ballistic missiles than the existing Dosan submarines, which have six launching tubes. The submarine will be powered by a nuclear engine instead of diesel.

The South Korea Navy currently operates a submarine fleet of nine diesel-electric Jang Bogo-class (Type 209/1200) and seven Son Won II-class (Type 214) hybrid diesel-electric/fuel cell vessels with air-independent propulsion (AIP).

The Korean Attack Submarine program, KSS meaning Submarine, is a three-phased project to build up the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy)'s attack submarine arsenal.

For the first phase KSS-I, the South Korean Navy acquired nine 1,200-ton Chang Bo-go class submarines. For the second phase, KSS-II, the South Korean Navy plans to acquire nine 1,800-ton Type 214 submarines equipped with Air-independent propulsion (AIP) the lead ship of her class, ROKS Sohn Won-il (SS 072) was launched at a shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries on June 9, 2006.

The third part of the program is the construction of nine local-made 3,000-ton diesel-electric attack submarines dubbed KSS-III equipped with air-independent propulsion and multiple vertical launch tubes able to fire Hyunmoo-3C cruise missiles at a range up to 1,500 kilometers.

In September 2018, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) launched the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy's first 3,000 tons submarine on September 14, 2018.

South Korea approves construction of 3 new KDX-III AEGIS destroyers

The South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on 30 April 2019 that Ministry of National Defense (MND) has approved plans to construct a second batch of three (3) new AEGIS-equipped Sejong Daewang-class KDX-III destroyers worth KRW3.9 trillion (US$3.3 billion), and a second batch of three (3) Dosan Ahn Changho-class KSS-III diesel-electric submarines worth KRW3.4 trillion (US$2.92 billion) for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN).

DAPA expects contracts to support the programs to be concluded within the year.

The second batch of KDX-III is expected to be an improvement over the previous design in terms of naval and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It will utilize the Lockheed Martin AEGIS Block 10 combat system and will be capable of intercepting ballistic missiles as well as an advanced air defense capability.

The ships are designed by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), which was awarded the contract to design in 2016. It is expected that both HHI and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), which built the first batch of KDX-III destroyers, will again share the contract to construct. DSME was recently acquired by HHI under a streamlining program.

The current KDX-III are currently the most powerful warship in the ROKN, and are equipped with a 127mm Mk.45 Mod.4 naval gun, a 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS, a Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Block 1 launcher, two triple anti-submarine torpedo tubes, four quadruple launchers for the SSM-700K Haeseong anti-ship cruise missiles, an 80-cell Vertical Launching System (VLS) for SM-2 Block IIIB / Block IV surface-to-air /ABM missiles, and a 48-cell VLS for Hyunmoo-3 land attack cruise missiles and K-ASROC Red Shark anti-submarine rockets.

The KDX-III have a full load displacement of 11,000 tons, are 166 meters long, with a beam of 21.4 meters, and a draft of 6.25 meters. They are powered by four (4) General Electric LM2500 gas turbines in Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) configuration, enabling the ship to a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles.

It is also equipped with a hangar facility for two anti-submarine warfare capable naval helicopters, usually either the AgustaWestland Super Lynx or Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk.

Those are high tech first world countries enjoying good relationships with the US, and face a Naval threat from China in their immediate vicinity, it makes sense for them.
😂South Korean warships are against Japan, You can look at the conflict between Japan and South Korea as a feud.South Korea has to take Japan's lead in everything.South Korea and Japan have a territorial dispute over Dokdo, and South Korea's helicopter carrier is called Dokdo.

The struggle between Japan and South Korea will intensify in the future.Because they are all crafty characters,They will deepen the conflict and avoid taking sides between China and the United States.Show it to America. We're too busy fighting to do anything else.
A trade war broke out between them last year.

I do agree that Japan and South Korea hate each other. I met a few Japs who absolutely detested the Koreans. However, the Japs are building up their navy against China, while SoKo's reason is unknown, atleast for me. With respect to the intensification of conflict, I strongly don't think this will happen. Japan has a bigger threat with China, and SoKo is seriously dependent on the US.

For South Korea, the first threat is North Korea, the second is Japan, do not want to China as a threat, has been trying to turn China into a domestic market.
For Japan, the first threat is North Korea, and the second is South Korea, the third is fear of Chinese retaliation.
There's a joke that says. The friendship between China and South Korea depends on Japan.Sino-Japanese friendship depends on South Korea.

I might agree with South Korea, as was seen in Moon Jae-In's term, but Japan is plain wrong. The Japs don't exactly like the North Koreans, but they are not priority number one. For the Japs, it is the exact opposite order you mentioned, with China being the biggest threat, followed by North Korea and then by SoKo.

North Korean missiles are not aimed at South Korea and cannot hit the United States. They are aimed at Japan. The Japanese are very afraid of North Korean missiles. China, Japan and South Korea are still more rational, and North Korea is a little crazy.
The contradiction between South Korea and Japan is very deep, historical issues, comfort women issues, territorial issues. In the 1998 financial crisis, Japan stabbed South Korea in the back.Last year, we all knew about the Sino-US trade war, but at the same time, Japan and South Korea also had a trade war. South Korea auctioned the trademarks of two Japanese companies.Japan awards South Korean comfort women $1 each to humiliate South Korea. South Korea launched a worldwide campaign to build a statue of comfort women opposite Japanese embassies abroad. From 2010 to 2016, Japan and ChinaJapan and China rise in hostility to each other, after 2016, Closer to each other. This is going to talk about Japan. This is about the national character of Japan. The Japan fear the strong and bully the weak. When China and Japan are about to fight, when China is now three times as big as Japan, it will not fight you. That's why Japan. This is why Japan has been following the United States.

So japan has threat from noKo and cheen .
cheen and soko are friends , but noko doesn't like japan , but like soko ?
Since soko and noko friend of cheen , they are enemy of jaapaan ?
So we expect a triad of Cheen, Noko , Soko to fight jaapaan which is friend with amrika , ok a very different perspective .
3 colonies vs 1 coloniser with its technofascist capitalist friend across the ocean.
Very interesting indeed.

Japan and SoKo can be mediated between by their Emperor, the US.

SoKo currently is trying a balancing act between appeasing China and keeping relations chill with the US, in amends after the whole THAAD fiasco which led to calls of BOYCOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT of Korean companies in China.

It won't be for long though, because US.

China, Japan and South Korea are quite complex.Because there's been a lot of love and hate in the last thousand years of history. It's all for the national interest.

China, Japan and south Korea are very pragmatic, or will not join the rcep, will not promote the china-japan-south Korea free trade area.

During the Obama era,During the Obama era, in order to unite against China, Japan and South Korea were forced to Solve the issue of comfort women,As soon as Obama left, they fell out.
Now Japan and South Korea will deliberately intensify the conflict to prevent direct confrontation with China. It can also be said that they are to perform for China and the United States to see:We are busy and have no time to do anything else. There is not so much ideology in East Asia.

Japan has an ideology. They are a proud people, and they have an extremely nationalistic population, especially with respect to their Empire until WW2. They still attempt historical revisionism on WW2. Vox and Chris Harris made a good video on this, which I would suggest you watch using a VPN.

South Korea on the other hand has none, having been taken over by Western decadence. They ceased to exist as a collective civilization the day North and South Korea were split on arbitrary reasons, and when SoKo became rich.

China on the other hand, is even worse, AFAIK. The Chinese had a pretty great culture, which Mao absolutely destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. Your past, your traditions were all wiped out and replaced by the Little Red Book. The CCP is attempting to revive the culture, but cultures are not artificial that can be created. They develop over time. If China's economic growth stops, and the CCP becomes incapable of handling their SCS claims, will the people of China stand with the CCP? What will happen to the average Chinese citizen? If a culture is destroyed, the feeling of national unity or a glorious past to rely on ceases to exist. The best example you should check out is Western Europe and the US, where immigrants and other cultures are all present, resulting in people who were born and grew up there their entire lives owing their loyalty to another country, while the host culture is getting wiped out and replaced by wokeism. If they have no culture, what is left for the West to defend? The question will arise in the average man, as to what are we fighting for? During the Cold War, they had an enemy in the Soviets and were patriotic, but 30 years of complacence is destroying them.

I believe that this may not happen in China, primarily due to your economic growth, and your belief of China vs the World(most of it), but be wary that a hundred years in the future, when the West is defeated, what will the average Chinese citizen fight for?

This is an interesting statement about China,The Cultural Revolution is just a name, not really a cultural revolution. The earliest version came from Taiwan, and the Indian media quoted many sources from Taiwan.Taiwan's news is just entertainment. Actually, it's anarchism, breaking up the government,In fact, it has mass movement to take over the government, the Red Guards took over the government and it has nothing to do with culture,It's just called the Cultural Revolution. Taiwan certainly say that China's orthodox culture is in Taiwan, because you have all lost your culture in the cultural revolution.
Many of the Indian reports on China come from Taiwan, such as plastic rice(Plastic is more than five times as expensive by weight as rice.), the collapse of the Three Gorges Dam every year, and the purchase of 100000 tons of rice in India at $300 a ton, which is said to be due to lack of food.Internal electoral needs

You can be assured that I don't make conclusions on the basis of Taiwanese or average Media reports. I know several China-focused academics, whom I trust more than either Chinese sources or Taiwanese sources.

I agree with the second paragraph, while I strongly disagree with the first paragraph. I can't really give you a rebuttal, considering that you have just made blanket statements of "Taiwan spread anarchy" or "Taiwan destroy culture". I would appreciate if you wrote a more detailed comment on why China didn't lose its culture during the Revolution.

And as for your statement a page back about India not being a major-level threat for China, here is a paper from your own Armed Forces' Think Tank:

The reports are all fragmented information. There are not many think tanks for China to study India. They study the United States, Europe, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East,The last one to study India.
Diplomacy is the continuation of internal affairs.
China's top diplomatic priority is the United States, followed by Europe, East Asia and Southeast Asia. For Western Central Asia and South Asia, maintaining border stability is OK. China has only 30, 000 soldiers on its entire border with India, while India has 300, 000. If the Chinese army is the first to provoke, it should be a war of public opinion, accusing India of crossing the border or building roads through various channels. If the United States wants to attack Iraq, it must first name a weapon of mass destruction. However, China did not accuse India in the media or other occasions, and all the news was leaked by India. So China believes that India first keeps putting all kinds of news in the media, and then increases confrontation and warms up the border situation. The transfer of the epidemic and the economic downturn, and even the collapse of the Indian power station, there is news that China may be how to do, and even farmers protest that China is how to do, as if it is OK to blame China for any problem.
