SCO gets bigger but less relevant. Bilateral cooperation is in full swing.

Heads of State of China and Kazakhstan Opened Up a New Model for China-Kazakhstan Cross-Border Transportation

[MOD Edit: Do not post maps incompatible with the official position of the Government of India.]

This event marks a major progress in enhancing China-Kazakhstan logistics cooperation from land bridge transport to international land-sea multimodal transport and global logistics chain. By integrating the advantages of ports, shipping and railways, it effectively promotes the seamless connection and connectivity between the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road. Meanwhile, it opens up a new way for goods from Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries to be shipped overseas through the port in East China and serves as an important logistics center linking trade routes along the Belt and Road. In addition, it will boost the economic and trade links between China and Kazakhstan as well as the two countries’ relations. Today, the trade and economic development of the two countries is ushering in a new era.

Responding to the Belt and Road Initiative, COSCO SHIPPING has always played an active role in the development of China-Kazakhstan two-way transport corridor. The Group owns more than 340 modern container vessels and operates over 340 domestic and international routes. Relying on its quality liner routes, multimodal transport service network, and integrated logistics system, COSCO SHIPPING has effectively multimodal China-Europe international train services and liner services, providing strong cargo source support and service guarantee for the operation and worldwide extension of the China-Kazakhstan cross-border transport corridor, offering a higher-quality package of supply chain solutions to global clients, and further facilitating the development of China’s foreign trade and the Belt and Road.

Just 24 days ago, the three-party share transfer agreement on the dry port in the Khorgos-East Gate SEZ was officially signed in Beijing among China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited (COSCO SHIPPING), Lianyungang Port Holdings Group Co., Ltd. (LPH) and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway company of Kazakhstan. According to the agreement, COSCO SHIPPING and LPH would jointly acquire a 49% stake of the dry port which was originally owned by KTZ.

Mr. Amandyk Batalov, Governor of the Almaty Region and Mr. Sanzhar Yelubayev, Vice President of KTZ gave an overview of the infrastructure construction of the Khorgos-East Gate SEZ and the operation of the dry port project at the parallel session at the dry port in the Khorgos-East Gate SEZ.

At the dry port in the Khorgos-East Gate SEZ, “COSCO SHIPPING” containers are reloaded and will be shipped from Lianyungang to Central Asia and Europe.

At the site of China-Kazakhstan logistics terminal in Lianyungang, M.V. COSCO EUROPE is berthing during its voyage in the trans-Pacific major route.

Blue “COSCO SHIPPING” containers are unloaded from the vessel one after another.

The containers are transferred by trucks and will be hoisted to a China-Europe block train in the port area before leaving for Istanbul, Turkey.

Meanwhile, another full-loaded China-Europe block train (Lianyungang–Almaty) is ready to go.

The political parties forum (PPF) is part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a Eurasian grouping for political, economic and security cooperation among the member countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, apart from neighbour China.

Last June, Iran and Pakistan became full members of the SCO at a summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

‘Important partner’

To take part in SCO political forum at invitation of ruling Communist Party before leaving for Shenzhen in South China’s Guangdong province.

“China is our important neighbour and we hope to have meaningful discussions with them when we meet with the senior leadership of the Chinese party,”

Interestingly, a CPC delegation had attended the Congress’ Plenary held in Tehran last year.

The Congress delegation is visiting at the invitation of the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). Hosted by the international department of the Central Committee, the political conference is scheduled to take place between May 25-28.

A Congress delegation left for China on Friday to take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Political Parties Forum in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

Congress’ deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma is leading the six-member delegation that includes former ministers Mukul Wasnik and Pallam Raju, party’s chief whip in the Rajya Sabha Bhubaneshwar Kalita and the former Kerala MP and former KPCC chief K. Murleedharan.

Mr. Sharma didn’t elaborate on the nature of discussions but the visit is significant . Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Chinese troop build-up near Doklam during his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jingping at Wuhan.

Other political parties such as the BJP and CPI(M) have also been invited and the meet is expected to facilitate exchanges between different political parties in an attempt at opening up by China.

Envoy: China endorses Iran’s SCO accession
“During President Xi Jinping’s visit to Iran, China announced its support for Iran’s accession to the body,” Pang Sen told a press briefing held at the Chinese Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday.

The group notably rejected the U.S. from gaining observer status in 2004, reinforcing the impression that its goal is to exist in opposition to Western political and military alliances.

While having an observer status since 2005, Tehran’s bid to join the bloc has failed so far.

SCO dejected as India to host virtual summit
Members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) are unhappy over India’s announcement to have the SCO Summit in a virtual format.

NEW DELHI: Members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) are unhappy over India’s announcement to have the SCO Summit in a virtual format. “We have been looking forward to our leaders meeting in person until we heard that the summit would now be virtual. Since December 2022, we were gearing up for the event and stopped in our tracks when the announcement to host the event virtually was made in May,” said the representative of an SCO member country.
India took the chairmanship of the SCO from Uzbekistan after the conclusion of the SCO Summit in Samarkand in September 2022. After hosting nearly 134 meetings in person, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on May 30 that the summit would be held virtually on July 4.
“India has been too consumed by the G20 Presidency and the events revolving around it, as a result of which the events under the SCO chairmanship have been lost. The only time SCO came into prominence briefly was during the SCO foreign ministers’ meet in Goa,” said an SCO member.
The SCO grouping is by no means insignificant if one was to consider the geographic scope and population. “It is the world’s largest regional organisation in terms of area, covering approximately 60 per cent of Eurasia and 40 per cent of the world population, with a combined GDP of 20 per cent of the global GDP. So, it is only natural for us to have expected it to be more visible,” added another SCO member.

This is not a joke. Before Pakistan became a member, SCO was a serious alignment.
Pakistan was onboarded, it became a joke. India was onboarded, for God knows what reasons, since India does not see itself as aligned to the Russo China sphere, and now this. India should refrain from becoming member of everything and diluting everything.

The only way to Veto an Anti-India move by any international organisation is by becoming a part of it. By joining SCO we prevented it from going full on Anti-India alliance in future.

We keep hounding the OIC through MEA for its anti-India stance, become we are not allowed to be a part of OIC. We then have to rely on countries like Maldives, Bangladesh & Indonesia to defend us there.

Something similar could have happened for SCO.

Russia wanted India in at that time as a balance to China and her allies in SCO. When Russia insisted, China wanted Pakistan in. We came in as Russia wanted us in for support.

That is fine because it means that China's darling, their creation, is a joke. China should have thought better than to bring in Pakistan because it meant that SCO would have been a real force to be reckoned with.
