India to invite heads of 10 Asean nations for Republic Day celebrations
NEW DELHI: In perhaps the most significant exposition of its 'Act East' policy, India will invite the heads of state or government of all 10 Asean nations for the Republic Day parade and celebrations next year. Asean is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and has as members Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Republic Day 2018 will be the first time ever that so many leaders will together be chief guests at the parade which showcases India's military might.
Since it renamed 'Look East' as 'Act East' in 2014, the NDA government has sought a more "dynamic" and "action-oriented" approach in its relations with not just Asean, but also the wider Asia-Pacific, with emphasis on Japan. However, Asean continues to be the central pillar of 'Act East', and the special summit next year in January is expected to further underscore the point.
According to the external affairs ministry, this year, India and Asean are marking 25 years of dialogue partnership, 15 years of summit-level interaction, and five years of strategic partnership, through a wide range of activities, both in India and through Indian missions in Asean member-states, including a commemorative summit on the theme, 'Shared Values, Common Destiny' .

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

Will all 10 agree to this? Also, will all 10 send their own marching contingents to participate in the parade?
What the hell is going to happen in subsequent parades? Will we invite all African Heads of state for Republic Day 2019?

Perhaps this is a good move, though as @Bornubus has stated - a protocol nightmare. Why a good move? it is no new fact that the the current Govt. is giving a push to 'Act East Policy'. This helps in realizing that. Also, not to forget this is a direct snub to China amidst the ongoing stand-off. First, staring eye-to-eye at the border, then ignoring their threats, then giving Dalai Lama permission to conduct his birthday fest in Ladakh and now this, India seems to be pulling China's leg and provoking them to make a mistake. Quite an offensive diplomacy.

Yep, that sounds like a good idea....

Now coming to 2018 parade, we have six months to make sure everything goes according to the plan.

Half of the above mentioned countries have issues with China.

We might have a skimmers with China by end of the year...This is to make sure that even if China gets a military victory (90% not possible against world's best mountain warfare army), it is diplomatically defeated.

If the skimmers don't happen or China gets defeated, this incident can become something as rubbing both salt and pepper on the wound.

Coming to protocol nightmare, GOI might have assessed the situation and possible mishaps...It has 6 months to prepare...

On funny note, @Adioz we can do that...

After all China has huge investments in Africa. Not only that African nations have issues with Chinese investment policies. But they don't have replacement for China. We can call 5 to 10 national heads and discuss on the investment plans....

It is also significant that Singapore and Vietnam have been exhorting India to increase its profile in the region. China's increasing assertiveness, some would say belligerence, in the way it has handled maritime territorial disputes, particularly in the South China Sea, continues to spark fear and insecurity in the region. At least 4 Asean countries — Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei — are directly party to disputes involving Beijing in the South China Sea. Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong is likely to attend the function.

India and Asean upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2012, and the government has of late sought to further impart strategic content to relations by focusing on stepping up defence and security ties, including with Vietnam.

As foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said at the recent India-Asean Delhi Dialogue, India and Asean share a common geographical space where they face common traditional and non-traditional security challenges. "Freedom of navigation and respect for international law is therefore imperative in this context. Equally, we remain committed with Asean to enhance our maritime cooperation, to realise the full potential of our ocean economy. We will continue to step up cooperation in countering terrorism, piracy and other transnational crimes," she had said.

India and Asean are also "actively" engaged in negotiations on forging a 'regional comprehensive economic partnership', which is expected to emerge as the largest regional trading arrangement accounting for about 40% of world trade.

Indian Govt. should initiate in creating a FTA Zone comprising 10 Asean nations India, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan & Australia & New Zealand to Counter Chinese CPEC & Obor at better terms and conditions like no debts and with existing Infrastructure. No Chinese goods allowed if the said product is available within the block like all Mobiles & Parts should be bought only from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan etc. Further Roads and Railway network should be made from India to all Asean nations and where roads and Railway can't be built sea lanes to be used with huge capacity ports connected to Roads & Railways. Once successful go on adding more nations to isolate China completely. This will also improve Indian Economy and standing in the world.

India has a FTA with ASEAN and CEPA with South Korea. And it highly important to develop with other countries as suggested, before that we should reject the One China Policy (in relation with Taiwan) and boost ties with the same.

The key to hard diplomacy is to ensure that it is gradual. Progressive steps in hard diplomacy should be made at the rate which is just short of "enough reason" for the enemy to react sharply or up the ante. Rejection of one China policy, if it comes, should be gradual and with enough warnings for Beijing, so that it at least reconsiders its support for Pakistani claim to Kashmir. Meanwhile, we need to progressively insulate ourselves from any shocks (such as economic) that the Chinese can give us as a return gift of this hard diplomacy. Needless to say, given the already high tensions, we must defer the rethink on One-China policy to the next stress-cycle. This invite to ASEAN leaders must be the final step in this cycle IMHO.

How can there be 10 chief guests? Chief means preeminent, there can be ten distinguished guests or something like that but only one chief guest. :scared1:

I see nothing wrong inviting 10 chief (distinguished) guests....more friends..more cooperation..more prosperity for all....Vasudev Kutambkum....the world is one family (from ancient Hindu scriptures)
BTW..don't worry..there are 190 nations in the World.
