Re: Army wants Light Specialist Vehicle

106mm RCL can be used as portable artillery also it can fire on move so does able to cause massive destruction at cheap against Infantry fortifications ..

These things cannot be done with ATGM mounted vehicle, Never underestimate Old stuff can do and out do new tech ..

106mm RCL can be used as portable artillery <as i have said here i agree

it can fire on move so does able to cause massive destruction at cheap against Infantry fortifications .. <don't you think a man portable system could do the same thing with much more versatility, adaptability, in your hand solution eg a section or platoon equipped with carl or rpg.

Never underestimate Old stuff can do and out do new tech .<who is ?aren't carl and rpg are old enough themselves

the point is we are not talking about old vs new but are talking about the" practicality and feasibility "of weapon system in a real battlefield. its not that rcl can't make a kill it surely can and in a devastating way but the debate is all about what would you prefer in today time and in this a man portable system comes in with all the advantages.I have a hard time picturing anyone fielding a crew-served weapon on a platform that offers NO protection for the gunner or other members of the crew these days.for destroying infantry carl in a section is much versatile and can be used as per the situation demanded or arises rather than depending on rcl mounted jeep .

as far as i am concerned i can see 106mm rcl being used only

in situations where the enemy it totally outfought, has no ability to return fire
as a weapon of very last resort where you have no other better option

AGAIN THE DEBATE IS ABOUT WHAT WOULD YOU "PREFER" 106MM OR RPG,CARLAND ATGM " IF" YOU HAVE THE OPTION AVAILABLE

please give me a situation where 106mm rcl would be more effective in indian context.............

Re: Army wants Light Specialist Vehicle

You do realize that when speaking about Carl, It is itself a RCL .. ?

As far as 106mm RCL in today`s senerio, It is best suited in defensive positions and hand of Para troopers, It has longer range and bigger diameter of shells..

Not to mention it has a range of 6kms in indirect mode, Gud for situating them at mountain regions..

=============================

Though, 106mm utility is limited to above prospects in my opinion ..

Gud for situating them at mountain regions..< here i have my doubts because High-angle fire and RCL don't go together very well because we've intentionally designed them for flat-angle direct fire. The Himalayan mountain range consist of very steep sloped mountains.

More R&D needs to be done on RCL technology IMHO. This has the potential to be a very potent modern anti-armour cheap weapon system.

For the rifle itself, a ballistic computer, Laser range finder, and optional few hydraulic actuators for remote aiming.

For the shells, maybe the technology of the AT4CS can be adopted for managing backblast. At the same time propellant technology evolution might help it to get >4km range.

IMHO such cheap systems mounted on fast vehicles has the potential to make light/medium armour irrelevant on the battlefield.

Re: Army wants Light Specialist Vehicle

During Kargil war, Artillery men had to carry 75mm Field guns by hands over mountains for direct fire, I wish RCL was active back then, Hopefully could have been used in direct role by Infantry itself ..

SPG-9, 73mm RCL Gun ..

The SPG-9 Kopye (Spear) is a Russian tripod-mounted man-portable, 73 millimetre calibre recoilless gun developed by the Soviet Union. It fires fin-stabilised, rocket-assisted HE and HEAT projectiles similar to those fired by the 73 mm 2A28 Grom low pressure gun of the BMP-1 armored vehicle.

The SPG-9 is light, and is normally transported by vehicle, and carried into position by its two crew. It can be deployed in around a minute. The weapon is in service with a large number of armed forces, and a variety of ammunition is produced, however mostly they are copies of the original Soviet PG-9 HEAT and OG-9 FRAG-HE rounds.

It Weight 59.5 kg (131 lb) with the tripod, And has a max range of 1,200 m ..

106mm RCL has a back blast and so siting would be problem.

That is why in the earlier days for the mountains, 57mm RCL ws authorised.

This is an interesting concept, a 20 MM rifle which looks like and is handled like a Recoilless rifle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V7HBgzgx5o

The new Iranian-made Arash 20mm anti-material rifle was tested during massive wargames, codenamed Payambar-e Azam 8 (The Great Prophet 8), in Southern Iran.
The IRGC's combat weapons were first put on display during a visit by IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari to an exhibition of the latest military achievements of the IRGC Ground Force's Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization in Tehran on November 18.

Arash is a 20mm shoulder-launched weapon. Arash is an anti-helicopter weapon system, but it can also destroy land and logistic targets with maximum precision. The weapon system can destroy targets within the range of 1,800 meters.
In February 2013, the IRGC test-fired the shoulder-launched weapon Arash with the capability of shooting down choppers in its massive wargames, codenamed Payambar-e Azam 8 (The Great Prophet 8), in Southern Iran.

Elaborating on the missions of the drills, Spokesman of the Wargames General Hamid Sarkheili told reporters that the new shoulder-launched anti-chopper weapons which have been designed and produced by the IRGC's local experts would be delivered to the operating units in the wargames.

"The 20-mm shoulder-launched missile is an anti-chopper weapon which can hit targets from a distance of 1,400 meters," Sarkheili stated.

Very interesting pictures, We regret phasing out these guns.

I hope that we some day issue a requirment of a vehicle mounted long barrel 84mm RL which use similar ammunition of hand held 84mm RL.

Such improvised solution cannot match what we have lost, Their is a need for such a system in hand of Infantry.

For sake of discussion, what does 106 mm RCL system provide?

It cannot penetrate modern armour. It does not offer protection to troops.

A soldier could dismount from a vehicle and fire a 84 mm weapon. As my.picture shows, reloading the rifle needs dismounting and vehicle to be stationary.

Moreover, you have ATGMs who can do the job which RCL can, potentially better though expensive.
