'Racist' cartoon mocks India after climate deal
December 14, 2015 18:12 IST

A cartoon depicting starving Indians breaking solar panels to eat was the response of an Australian daily to the climate deal reached in Paris. The solar panels were sent to India by the United Nations as a part of measures to curb greenhouse emissions.

The cartoon, published in The Australian, shows turban-wearing men breaking the UN-sent solar panels and saying, 'They're no good. We can't eat them'.

The cartoon, by veteran artist Bill Leak, has drawn much criticism from all over the world with people calling it 'unequivocally racist' and 'shocking'. It has been criticised as 'stereotyping the developing countries where people don't know what to do with technology'.

Criticising the cartoon, Australian MP Tim Watts wrote on Twitter, 'This is pathetic. What an embarrassment that a cartoon like this could appear in a national newspaper.'

According to a report in The Guardian, Clive Mathieson, the editor of The Australian, declined to comment on the cartoon.

Meanwhile, twitterati slammed the cartoon with many users pointing at India's rapidly developing sustainable energy sector and technological growth.

'Hey Bill Leak, some facts on India's renewable energy sector. They're a lot smarter than your cartoons are funny,' wrote a user with handle @MrDenmore, posting a link to India's ministry of new and renewable energy.

However, it is not the first time that Leak has drawn something 'racist' like this. He has been accused of becoming more and more conservative in recent years.

India had taken a strong stand against greenhouse emission by the rich Western countries at the climate change talks in Paris with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that it would be 'morally wrong' to let rich countries off the hook for their historical emissions.

American daily New York Times had also mocked India's stand seeking greater emission cuts from the developed countries. In a cartoon that depicted 'India's elephant' stopping the 'climate talks train', the daily purported to show that India's strong stand is blocking the deal.

In a similar cartoon last year, the New York Times had mocked India's low-cost mission to Mars. The daily later apologised for it.

"Chaand tak pahunch gaye hum log lekin ab bhi aap logo ko hum Hindustaniyon ke haath mein sirf saanp ki been hi nazar aati hai" (We reached the moon but you people can only see snake charmer's flute in our hands)

NYT, like US left-libs have protected groups for whom they make excuses. Asians ruin those excuses by being successful beating the same odds. Indo/Hindu phobia is just part of its overall bias against Asians.

If you are talking about Negros, you are spot on. On an average, negros have the IQ of a 14 year old Caucasian. The Mongoloids have the highest IQ. Average South Asian (Mixed Caucasian race) have slightly lesser IQ (5-10pts) than Caucasians.
Disclaimer: Exceptions exist.

Actually, there's nothing to feel bad about. This kind of cartoon actually proves that India is becoming a global power and that the west no longer can deny India its place. Particularly the elephant cartoon in itself is a measure of how influential we have grown.

Also, these exposes the shit for brains so called 'nationsl' media.

Points for India

Except that these "exceptions" are just too prevalent to be called "exceptions" anymore.

And that IQ is a bullshit measure which has absolutely no correlation to anything useful in life. And I say this as a person with a reasonably high "measured IQ". And hold on, my "IQ" has varied from 100 to 125 in various tests. So, not only is the measure itself horseshit, the measurement mechanism itself is horseshit. I mean, how can something so subjective be the basis for any sensible analysis?

The American homeless population is full of Caucasian whites. All the bums, druggies, serial killers, etc. have extremely high white Caucasian representation. The so-called "South Asian race" is consistently higher in every sphere of society and life. Oh wait, in this "South Asian race", the Pakis and BDeshis are several notches below Indians. The average Indian is a software professional or lawyer or doctor in US/UK while the average Paki/BDeshi is a cab driver/janitor/street sweeper.

Your "high-IQ" Mongoloids are so exceptional in Japan, not-so-exceptional in China, much better than average in Taiwan, and above average in South Korea, totally fucked up in North Korea. And wait - your not-so-exceptional Chinese were pathetic losers till 1979. As was South Korea before the 1990s.

There are so many exceptions and holes in this IQ-theory, I wonder how anyone can take this seriously. Not only is the measurement mechanism subjective and non-standard, the very result of the measurement has no correlation to any tangible fact - prosperity, power, cultural influence - NOTHING.

The only thing that matters is economic policy and financial policy. Nothing else matters. Every example bears this out.

West and China tried to get away with limited liability and restrictions on climate deal. Though they caused global warming they pushed for an equal binding clause for all countries irrespective of developed or developing countries. That ideas totally bullsh**. India was leading a protest against this proposal with the support of other poor and developing countries right from the previous 2010 Copenhagen climate summit. The Paris climate deal was a great success for indian diplomacy. That is the reason Western media got butt-hurt and all these cartoon bullsh**.

Just ignore these idiots. There will always be haters. We cannot keep tackling them all. Besides, if we are depicted as elephants, lets do what elephants do. Keep walking proud while the dogs bark.

And there was so much uproar over the Ford Figo cartoons. IMHO whoever made these cartoons should never have apologized, and certainly should not have been fired.

And India's national bird is a peacock. But the perspective leans towards elephants. Your point?
@Bornubus

as i said before just ignore the bs,
nothing to be agitated with but to answer your question,

chinas national animal is panda but china persuasive as a dragon,

while indias national animal is tiger but india taunted as an elephant,

this shows the difference, characteristics of two countries portrayed by westerners,

tiger is said to be king,it has power, speed, claws,
even in captivity they are dangerous,

and elephant is hugh but slow moving not generally to be sacred of,
only a big size to show the potential,
but you can see them coming mile off,no stealth,no tactics,
they can be easily avoided,
they can be hunted easily,
and even capture and put to work,

and we also pray to as westerners calls it elephant god,
it could mockery towards to lord ganesha,

where when it comes to china and their national animal panda,
it actually a lazy animal and not a some kungfu panda,
but china always described as a dragon which is actually a fictional animal, not even a real thing.

Oh, you wanna argue like that I see. Even the dragon can be seen coming from miles away and can be killed by SAMs. Did you know that an elephant can kill a tiger with 1 swing of his trunk? Also, how many times have you seen a tiger kill an elephant?

Elephants are the signs of pride and glory. Most of our kings used to ride them. They also signify that they are calm and composed, minding their own bußiness but not to be messed with.
