Wouldn't a single tracked TELAR vehicle like tor be better for qrsam ?

I don't think so, this is a MAN truck, if it was DRDO this would be an Indian or TATRA truck.

DRDO's homegrown quick reaction missile QRSAM successfully test fired off Odisha coast


BHUBANESHWAR: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired a Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) from a defence base off Odisha coast on Friday.

The homegrown canister-based high-speed weapon system, which can deceive enemy radars making it difficult to be detected, is capable of destroying aerial targets, tanks, bunkers and short range missiles.

The short-range weapon system was fired from a canister mounted on a rotatable truck-based launch platform at the Launching Complex-I (LC-I) of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea at about 2.30 pm.

Defence sources said the trial was conducted to check various parameters in its subsystems and performance of advanced software. It was third test of the newly developed missile, which is yet to get a formal name, and all three have been successful this year.


"All subsystems incorporated in the missile have performed well. Though no target was set for the missile, it covered the entire range as coordinated. The mission was successful and it proved complete indigenisation of surface-to-air systems," said a defence official.

It is a highly mobile air defence system which can destroy multiple targets at a distance of 25 km in less than one minute. Considered to be a unique system in its class, the missile is expected to supplement medium range surface-to-air missile Akash.

Since QRSAM is a much better system in terms of performance and lethality, India is more keen on developing high maneuverable and multi-role missiles, which will have 100 per cent kill probability.

It is an all-weather and all-terrain missile having electronic counter measures against all known aircraft jammers.

The state-of-the-art missile that uses high-energy solid propellant will have to go through a couple of more development flight trials before going into user phase tests, the sources added.

Thanks, but this is not CIWS. CIWS is a defensive weapon and can be used to take down incoming missile, especially subsonic cruise missiles.

This is an offensive weapon, something like HMG but with automated fire. Also, 200 rounds per minute is about 3 rounds per second. Even AK47 fires faster.

Looking to procure a quick reaction air defence system, the Indian Army wants the DRDO to provide missiles which are far better than what foreign vendors have offered it for the purpose of taking down enemy fighter aircraft, drones and helicopters.

The research agency has also responded positively and accepted the challenge to manufacture a world-class missile system.


The Indian Army is looking to acquire eight regiments of Quick Reaction-Surface to Air Missiles (QR-SAMs) for taking down targets at around 20 kilometres for the Army Air Defence and replace the Soviet-era OSA-AK air defence systems.

"The specifications given to the DRDO for development of the QR-SAM suggest that the Army wants the research agency to produce a better system than the ones offered by the foreign vendors," government sources told Mail Today.

As per the original plan, the foreign vendors were supposed to supply three regiments for meeting immediate operational requirements of the army, while the DRDO had to produce five regiments indigenously under the 'Make in India' programme.

"There are specifications like the speed of the missile for which the DRDO has been asked to develop a system, which can move at the speed of 700-800 metre per second, while the requirement for foreign vendors is significantly less," sources added.

Similarly, the range and capability of the radar sought by the Army from the DRDO is significantly higher than what they want from foreign vendors, they said.

The DRDO has accepted the challenge to develop a worldclass air defence system and is working hard to complete the programme within the 48-month time. The project is scheduled to come up for discussion during a high-level meeting of the Defence ministry under defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman later this month.

A QR-SAM is different from normal air defence system, as the missiles are required to be mobile during operations involving tracking and targeting enemy aircraft or drones in case of an aerial threat.

The DRDO took up the programme only recently, and it has already carried out two to three tests of the QR-SAM; and has assured the government for readying the missile system for user trials by the beginning of 2019. The foreign vendors looking to supply the QR-SAM missiles are from Israel and Russia.

The army has been insisting on going for immediate procurement from foreign vendors as it has been assured that the three regiments would be supplied within two years of signing the contract.

However, there has been a view from the DRDO that all the systems should be produced by them and its production agencies.

Mail Today had first reported that previous defence minister Arun Jaitley scrapped the Army programme of buying two short-range surface-toair-missile regiments from foreign vendors in favour of the Aakash missiles, which helped the country save `34,000 crore worth of foreign currency from going out of the country.

In a number of other programmes, the government has been favouring indigenous equipment over foreign ones to create jobs and promote 'Make in India'.

The QRSAM is being jointly developed by the DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited.

The missile system has the potential to engage multiple targets within a range of approximately 30 km, with the configuration of two vehicles for area air defence. The missile is being equipped for quick reaction and the system is all-weather enabled.

The missile is a truck-mounted one with 360 degree rotatable, electronic-mechanically operated, turret-based launch unit.


The air force has recently acquired the Israeli SPYDER QR-SAMS for protection against threats from Pakistan and China and started their deployment on the borders.

This is not the way things should go, the end user, the Indian army, challenging the country's premier defence research agency for producing a world class surface to air missile for taking down enemy's fighter aircrafts, drones and helicopters. IMHO instead they should work in coordination, cooperatively and collaboratively among themselves, this 3C's are lacking in case of other indigenous defence projects such as arjun MBT, tejas and assault rifles etc. It seems like they still don't learn their lessons. Otherwise no chance to be a future superpower.

While Pantsir-S2 is higly mobile with fire-on-move capability, counter-measures exist. It seems Israelis have one.
But the system is compact. Search Radar, Track Radar, 6 Missiles, 2 Guns all mounted on single platform. Good for armored units on move.

Here Israelis have animated three SEAD products against Pantsir like system :p


Spyder is more like a static role. Never saw it in fire-on-move role. I guess the IAF took it to give extra protection for their Command &Control facilities / HQ's apart from Akash/Pechora already guarding the base.(Unlike NewsPaper walas which say "ÏAF junks Akash, says hello to Spyder").Having two sets of missiles working on different sensors might give it better ECCM as Fire&Forget missiles are vulnerable to jamming from more powerful SEADs/decoys/jammers.

Waiting to see how our QRSAM turns up

There really is nothing wrong with holding DRDO to a higher standard, just that IA should remember to actually buy the systems in large numbers eventually and not dilly dally for whatever reason.

I think 200 rpm is pretty standard for a 30mm if you look at its contemporary the Bushmaster, it has a similar rof.

200RPM is good enough for offensive roles but not CIWS role.

At the time of posting the comment, I did not know that India had got ToT for making AK630 in OFB. So, Ak630M is actually Indian made and hence there is no need for another CIWS to be made.

The BHEL haridwar is a surface gun, not CIWS. It is useful in attacking enemy speedboats and patrol boats while not being heavy on ammunition consumption

At the time of posting the comment, I did not know that India had got ToT for making AK630 in OFB. So, Ak630M is actually Indian made and hence there is no need for another CIWS to be made.

Astra missile to provide aerial defence to Navy warships

New Delhi: In a major success for the indigenous weapons programme, the Ministry of Defence has decided to develop the homegrown Astra air-to-air, beyond visual range missile into an air defence missile system for the Navy which needs such short-range systems to defend its warships from incoming enemy weapons.

The Astra missile has been developed by the DRDO for front-line combat aircraft such as the Sukhoi-30 and the LCA Tejas meant for shooting down enemy planes at a distance of 70-80 km and was being developed as an air-to-air missile system.

"As part of a proposal cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council led by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Navy will be provided with 14 vertically-launched short range surface to air missile systems for protecting its warships. Of these, four systems will be procured through a global tender while the remaining would be developed indigenously by the DRDO," sources told MyNation.

"The Navy is looking for 10 homegrown SR-SAMs and the DRDO will be developing the Astra missile as the solution for these requirements. The Navy is looking at a missile system which can intercept enemy missiles or aircraft at ranges up to 15 kilometres and the Astra would be able to fulfill this role," the sources said.

The Navy has been working on providing air defence systems to its warships and has been getting the long-range surface-to-air missile systems (LR-SAMs) from Israel while it has been projecting a requirement for short-range weapon systems also.

As per an older plan, the requirement was to be fulfilled through a joint venture programme with France, but after the Army and the Air Force withdrew from it, the cost of the project escalated too much for the maritime force.

The Astra missile programme has been quite successful in meeting the requirements of the Air Force, which has been evaluating it. The Air Force wants its range to be enhanced at different stages to end the reliance on foreign players for these needs.
