Quadrilateral security dialogue- Resurrected!!

Somewhere in 2006-2007 Abe, the Japanese Prime minister came up with the idea of Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) between Asia's maritime democracies Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.
QSD was endorsed by likes of Dick Cheney (the US vice president then) and QSD got huge support from US.
Soon all this culminated in one of the biggest joint military exercises in the Bay of Bengal in which all the 4 countries participated.

Meanwhile, the very observant China raised a protest and went on to call QSD a mini NATO and its concerns were justified. China perceived QSD as a Gang of Four against Beijing's interests in the region.
Soon after this Australian Prime Minister Rudd pulled Australia out of QSD because it could not afford to hurt its relations with China, QSD was an obstacle in the deepening economic relations between the two. Rudd's departure from QSD earned him the ire of US, the director of national security council (US) accused Australia of trying to please China.[r]
India also knew the perils of putting China offside, the UPA government in India (then) did not have the courage to rise against China as this would not 've happened for gratis or free. China was the only country in the region capable of injecting tens of billions of dollars for a much needed modernization of India.

And then QSD was almost forgotten for sometime.
QSD got resurrected with Obama's recent visit to India.China was definitely a topic during the 45 minutes long "Chai pe charcha" between Modi and Obama. After the meeting India decided to flex its pecs and during the joint statement both the countries declared having a "strategic vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region".

IMF's recent predictions that India would grow at 6.5 percent in 2016 (which would be more than its himalayan neighbor), must have been an impetus behind India's recent stance [r].This clearly shows Modi doesnt want to return to the bargaining table with China.
While Australia on its part has shown its willingness to get back to QSD, Australian foreign policy tilts towards a closer relationship with the United States and a distancing from China.
In America prominent politicians from both Democratic and Republican parties have voiced support for a more aggressive diplomacy in Asia, QSD would help in achieving it.

If the QSD in 2007 was founded on the hypothesis of a revisionist China, then 2014 is replete with supporting evidence. If the four democracies 're successful in resurrecting QSD then its bad news for China.

It all boils down to how quickly India gets back to 7 - 8 % sustained growth rate in next 2 years... If what is anticipated [India economic revival] is true then India do not need to look for investments from China to fuel growth for next decade... The western democracies will prefer India over secrative China ... India on its part do not need to have a sustained program and policy to safe guard its interests and need not play into others in security...

Assuming QSD is true, modi and team has to prepare our citizens for the eventuality that everything will not go in india's way. Any country which is dragged into america's gravitational pull will have its share of criticism from American people, politicians and media. This is important because americans control the narrative on global issues.

Case in point during the Obama visit articles originating from nytimes and washingtonpost projected this visit as if india is so worried about China that we are taking the initiative against China. While this may be true this is only half truth. Americans are equally worried about China because they have more to loose if China goes rouge .

Our MSM has to make a conscious effort to tow the govt line on international issues, it is evident after the Nirbhaya rape international media is having an eye on indian media. We have to avoid going overboard with our reactions for everything bad that happens.

I dont know why the UPA govt did not even do what was required to atleast even stand up to China. It's not even about money or investment. I recently heard this in an Arun shourie talk: We had applied for a loan to the ADB for projects in Arunachal Pradesh, china was objecting and raised a conflict. The officials who had gone there to argue the case in Manila, ended up apologizing to China instead of fighting the case....after this ADB decided to not give loands for projects in "disputed areas". They refused to build roads/infra for a long time as it would "anger China", and many more. I really dont understand this, do they even think that the land is theirs? Some of these things the UPA did have no logic....

I'm not sure if India would be the first choice, despite this US would choose India to curb China's progress. The Chinese economy's progress would definitely be against American interests.
India has so far been neutral, even the new found bonhomie between Abe and Modi could not get India to take a stance against China.
But if China keeps pumping its money into the monstrous Pakistan then sooner or later India would 've to take a stance against China.
The interesting new development is RIC (Russia- India- China) meeting, Pakistan was given a royal snub and ergo it is not invited. Definitely the meeting would be on key issues which is security and trade. Recently China has been very vociferous about the terrorist training camps in Pakistan, this is a good sign for a change. I think other than a few peccadilloes at the border China would not
And for Russia the pit fall of rouble and Ukraine issue makes RIC meeting with the regional giants even more important.
Yes Russia has now thawed its relations with Pakistan but then am sure Russians do know that Pakistan would not be able to pay 'em as much as India. And Russians can not invest in Pakistan for gratis.Lolzz @ezsasa
@Free Karma: That was news to me! UPA's soft stance on key issues has put India in embarrassing situations many times.

I think at least quad group can help us in developing our special forces like it happened in the case of nato
From what I gather after reading posts in Special Forces thread..... our Special Forces lack somewhat in equipment, not in training.
I didn't know that Japan and Australia had such amazing Special Forces, that they will help India.

Agree to America. That's why I mentioned Japan and Australia only.
Would be particularly helpful in Amphibious/Expeditionary.
