Purulia arms drop informers get Rs. 10,000 after 13 years
Purulia (WB) (PTI) Thirteen years after they braved a cold wintry night in 1995 to inform the police about the Purulia arms drop, the two youths have been given cheques of Rs 10,000 each which they have decided not to accept.
The two -- Subhas Tantubai and Tarit Bandyopadhyay -- of Galudi and Khatanga villages in the backward district have refused to accept the cheques issued by the West Bengal government which, Tantubai said, came after a long wait and false job promises.
A Latvian plane had dropped several hundred AK-47 rifles and huge rounds of ammunition in a field on the night of December 17, 1995. Then in their 20s, the two youths were at a local club when they heard loud thuds of the arms being dropped.
They went to the field on a bi-cycle to see large cartons spread all over and informed the nearby Jhalda police station.
Tantubai told PTI they were at that time praised and honoured for their bravery. Also, the then leader of the Opposition in Parliament A.B. Vajpayee had promised group D jobs to them during his visit, he claimed.
