Thyssenkrupp could bid to supply six submarines to Indian Navy
By Alexander Ratz and Christoph Steitz
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Germany’s Thyssenkrupp AG is likely to bid for a project to supply six submarines for the Indian Navy, German defence minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday, during a visit to New Delhi.

Earlier, Pistorius met his counterpart Rajnath Singh, at a time when the South Asian nation is looking to boost domestic defence manufacturing as it aims to counter China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean.

“We talked about a concrete cooperation in military procurement. That could be six submarines from TKMS,” Pistorius said, referring to the firm’s marine arm. “That could be a lighthouse project.”

Thyssenkrupp’s marine arm is expected to sign the deal with the Indian company on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

In February, Reuters reported that Thyssenkrupp would bid for the $5.2-billion project in a bid to replace the navy’s ageing submarine fleet, as Western military manufacturers attempt to wean New Delhi from its dependence on Russian gear.

German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung first reported that an MoU between Thyssenkrupp and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders would be signed on Wednesday, with the value of the agreement expected to be about 7 billion euros.

In March, India approved a budget of 560 billion rupees ($6.8 billion) for its navy, which has 16 conventional submarines, 11 of them more than two decades old, along with two indigenous nuclear-powered submarines.

“India’s skilled workforce and competitive costs along with Germany’s high technologies and investment can further strengthen ties,” Singh said in a statement that did not refer to the submarines, however.

Mazagon Dock did not immediately respond to a request for comment while Thyssenkrupp declined to comment.

Shares of Mazagon Dock rose as much as 7.7% to a record high.

‘None with operational AIP.
Not a issue thanks to DRDO AIP, also India developed LI-ion batteries.
There is no German submarine which meets IN requirement, 3000T+ with VLS for brahmos / brahmos2.
French already sold aip ssk with MESMA AIP, PN also using French aip
Japan new ssk lacks aip, insisted of aip, they use li-batteries

I think India uses Black Shark Torpedo from Italy for its submarine & a submarine version of Varunastra is already on the anvil. So integrating Russian weapons may be optional.

Thyssenkrupp, India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders sign submarine MoU
FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Germany’s Thyssenkrupp and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have signed an agreement to participate in a tender by the Indian Navy that sources said has a value of around $5.2 billion.

As part of the planned cooperation, Thyssenkrupp would take care of engineering and design, while Mazagon would be in charge of construction and the delivery of submarines the Indian Navy has tendered, Thyssenkrupp said.

These was a big Data leak on the Scorpene submarine during 2015. Some foreign journalist had got his hands on classified brochure on the base version of Scorpene that was presented to Navies of possible client Nations.

They were never supposed to be on public domain. It had data on the magnetic bearing of the submarine. Frequency of Propeller shaft. Data on the active & passive sonars. Even the possible communication frequency. Every data that is used by hostile nations to detect our submarine.

The Indian Navy had said that changes would be carried out to mitigate the compromise. And also the Indian version had additional modifies. But the construction had already started & there is little we could do to change the data related to the over all structure.

Maybe the Data compromise was too big of a deal to continue with the Scorpene program.

Naval Group has also short changed IN & MDL which resulted in cost & time over runs which both serving as well as retired personnel of MDL & IN have commented on in SM & MSM from time to time. Left to themselves they don't want to have anything to do with NG.

In fact NG has a particularly nasty reputation in this regard with even the former Malaysian Naval chief going public to say NG had basically swindled Malaysia when they collaborated with NG to build Scorpene class submarines in Malaysia. Australia kept reporting escalation in budgets before they booted NG out to form AUKUS. Norway reported NG backsliding from their commitments when they were negotiating for their requirements of conventional submarines with NG due to which they didn't consider NG for their requirements.

No, IN using Russian and German old torpedoes, due to corruption IN unable to buy modern torpedoes, and using existing old torpedoes in scropene, that why Varunastra is a good news for IN, meanwhile PN using best torpedoes in the world. IN considering French F21 for scropene.
