GRSE lays keel of Navy's second stealth frigate

Kolkata, Jan 24 (PTI) The Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) on Friday laid the keel of the second of three advanced stealth frigates it is building for the Indian Navy, an official said here.

The keel is the lengthwise structure along the base of a ship, supporting the framework of the whole.

Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS), Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar commended the city-based Defence PSU for its commitment in providing maintenance support to the ships built by it.

'GRSE can be proud of its achievements as it continues to build complex ships under stringent timelines,' he said in his address during the keel laying ceremony.

The officer said the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard are on a growth path, thus boding well for the shipyard's future wherein quality ships are expected on time.

The keel laying for the second frigate was achieved ahead of schedule, a GRSE official said.

The contract of Rs 19,294 crore for construction of three highly advanced stealth frigates under Project 17A is the largest ever order won by the company, the official said.

The contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence and GRSE on February 20, 2015.

The first ship is expected to be delivered in 2023 and the next two ships in 2024 and 2025 respectively, the official said.

P17A ships are state-of-the-art guided missile frigates, each of which is 149 metres long, with displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and a speed of 28 knots.

These frigates are being built deploying the latest integrated construction methodology with enhanced pre- outfitting to enhance quality and reduce build periods considerably, the official said. PTI AMR NN NN

The main delay for P15B destroyer is the delay in the deliveries of main shaft from Russia and GT from Ukraine.

We need to know from where main driving shafts of P17A were procured, whether that source can provide for shaft of P15B class of warship. ( P17A are 6670 tonnes vs P15B are 7500 tonne). Also, can LM2500 can be substituted for Zorya GT in subsequent class (P15C ?) as LM2500 is licence manufactured at HAL.

I have always maintained that we should seek to move away from the Russian/Ukrainian dependence for the destroyer-class propulsion. Western solutions are much better & more reliable.

Even IN knows this very well which is why the P-17/17A, P28 & IAC-1 all have Western propulsion setups.

But the destroyer line to include P-15A/15B still heavily draw their lineage from the P15 Delhi class, which was built with extensive Soviet/Russian influence at the time (laid down in 80s) and so far DND has been either unable or unwilling to move away from that.

Part of the reason why I think that the future P-18 NGD class is much better off being an enlarged P17A hull instead of enlarged P15B hull*. The P17A is already only about 6-800 tons lighter and about ~10m shorter than the P15B, not that much of a difference.

* enlarging an existing hull is how the Chinese created the Type 055. The hull is basically an extended 052D, all the major differences are in the superstructure sitting on top of the hull, not in hull itself.

All the follow on classes of the Indian DDG, frigates, corvettes shpuld not stop construction and move onto the next class by constructing only 3-4 ships of each class. It should be mandated that atleast 8-10 ships of each class are built before moving onto the next class.
Improvements can be made like how the Americans are doing with their Arleigh Burke Class DDG.

Unless we have an indegenious propulsion for navy warships we can't be fully dependent on West which might sanction us for dubious reasons. So Russian Western both propulsion will be maintained untill indegenious marine engine comes about.

...meanwhile all of PLAN's 30-odd frigates of Type-054A class are powered by French diesels (SEMT Pielstick made in China).

The only reason why P-15A/B continue to rely on Russian/Ukrainian stuff is because that's what they were designed to work with, owing to P-15 class lineage, which was designed in an era when India was pretty much in Soviet bloc...not because of any grand strategy to not put all eggs in Western basket.

Stealth subsonic is already in works in form of rechristened nirbhay program.

Hypersonic is also in works with hdstv and also in jv with Russia for bramhos 2.

Bramhos meanwhile is operational now and in Mass production and neither Chinese nor porky have any defenese against it. So all is fine.
