Ya’ll Nibbiars, US Navy has converted her SSNs into SSGNs which has enabled each Ohio class submarine to now carry a 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles in a single Submarine!

Indian Navy can procure a few French Barracuda Class SSNs for SSGN roles as each would be able to carry 60-70 Nirbhay Cruise Missiles or BrahMos Supersonic Cruise missiles from vertical tubes.

The submarine will also have the ability to launch Special Forces for Operations and Drones for Surveillance.

The reason why Indian Navy should get these is because of the fact that these SSGNs when equipped with Hypersonic BrahMos or our Indigenous Hypersonic missiles will become next to invincible and will be a bigger deterrent than an SSBN and 60-70 Hypersonic Cruise Missile would be enough of a Nightmare for the enemies.

Ohio was an SSBN and converting it to SSGN was 'easy' .

Baraccuda is an SSN and doesnot have any VLS .

A better option would be to convert our Arihant Class to SSGN when our next gen SSBN comes online .

We need to quarantine @Haldilal, he is spreading his lingo disease.

On Topic:- Nuclear submarines are considered one of the most secretive projects and technologies of a country akin to nuclear weapons and stealth jets. Do you think France will sell them to us? Even Russians who are ready to sell their mothers for money only leased us soviet-era Akula.

We are. BARC is developing a new reactor for S5 class and SSN we need a more powerful reactor.
Could it be based on our fast breeder reactor or advanced heavy water reactor design as both of these are better than older phwr

I am talking about Baraccuda design all other components would be Indian, we can negotiate for the design else can do it on our own, you just simply got it what I mean.

A dedicated SSGN design would be even better if Navy gives a F about it!

Not sure. I am not a nuclear expert. Breeder reactors are next gen technology anyways, they are the fourth or fifth or something generation of fission reactors. The core concern AFAIK is energy density of reactor fuel. It needs to be high in naval reactors. Not sure if Fast Breeders can achieve that.

IIRC there is some stipulation in NPT that prohibits sale of nuke vessels and hence to bypass it Soviets came with the idea of leasing the subs .

Nuclear subs can't be sold according to International rules/ treaty hence they're leased. The chakra which is with India is literally like we own under lease umbrella and at the end of lease agreement it's rendered useless or goes to refit.

Marine reactors are mainly LWR as moderator and coolant are easily avaliable as sea water .

Even our own design is a LWR with 83 MW capacity and is being scaled up as a 900MW for power reactor .

There was some rumours that France had agreed to share sub design details as a offset package for Rafale deal .

A clean sheet SSGN design should be considered, 3 such boats would be enough to cause panic In our adversaries.

Why can't a s5 sister class can't do the role , we can make necessary modification ,both class should go in production at same time , imagine a heavy ssbn and ssgn inducted together .

This.

When they come in for their refueling cycle, each Arihant can very well be converted to SSGN role (only if a corresponding S-5 becomes available to carry on the deterrence role though). The 4 x ballistic missile silos can be converted into cruise missile VLUs. A silo that can hold 3 x K15 SLBMs (0.74m diameter each) should be able to hold 5 or 6 Nirbhay-sized SLCMs (0.52m diameter each) - that would equal 20-24 long range LACMs per sub. Twice that of what a Virginia-class carries in its forward VLS (12).
