I eat too much beef to ever be Hindu. I am not part of any religion that questions my diet.

Filet Mignon
Filet mignon (French for "cute fillet" or "dainty fillet") is a steak cut of beef taken from the smaller end of the tenderloin, or psoas major of the beef carcass, usually a steer or heifer. In French this cut is called filet de bœuf, which translates as beef filet. When found on a menu in France, filet mignon generally refers to pork rather than beef.

Re: Pope's resignation announcement in full

Well who is gonna be the next Pope`?????
They are predicting an African Pope.

Africa is still a place where 'harvesting of soul' is feasible.

With an African Pope, the African ego would be massaged with remunerative consequences.

Though, Indian Cardinals (numbers 07) also have a good chance!

India is also a ripe plum!

That would truly be a change, but I doubt that it will happen. The ultra conservative elements are still to strong. It will be another european for sure.

What us the beauty I don't understand? For these many years there was not even a single Black Pope and there is discrimination in the election of the Pope. If they were so secular, at least according to our Elite Member, why din't they elect a black Pope in the past. Still the Pope being elected from Africa is just an expectation and there is no need of comparison between two different faiths. This shows the illicit mind of the ELITE MEMBER, who has no brain......

Why must the Church be admired grudgingly?

There should be no hangup about that since there is indeed not supposed to be any caste or class distinction and that is real good.

Though the Cardinals are known as 'the Princes of the Church'!

Admire the Church without reservation.

What rats?

The Karni Mata Temple?

What is bious?

That would last about 30s on my plate.

Anyway, I think the next Pope should be of colour as an image change is essential for its continuation. It is regarded as the old white man's religion of pedos now.

Hmm...until the Reformation Christianity was just another Middle Eastern sect that punished anyone that anyone disagreed with the Church. Galileo and his punishment by the Church anyone...? Europe blossomed only after the stranglehold of the Church was broken over society. The Church punished and made second class citizens of Jews and Hitler justified his persecution of Jews by saying they betrayed Christ. Devout Church going America had slavery until 19th century and segregation and second class status for Blacks until the 1960's.

That doesn't negate the point Iamanidiot made, ignoring his choice of words. The Church was/is anti science, but it was/is democratic.

Contrast it to India's case where all temples are maintained by a clan of hereditary priesthood. Exceptions are few.

What it was is immaterial. What it is now at the present and what it will be are more salient to the discussion. They are reformingg and reformed while in Hinduism everything is going static

Nothing is static in the world.

Lets play the Devil's Advocate.

If Hinduism was static, then the temple entry would be restricted, which it is not.

If Hinduism was static and dogmatic, then jobs would be hereditary, which is not the case.

If Hinduism was all pervasive, then those who fought for India's freedom, and who ran the Govt on independence after Partition, being Hindus, would have made India a Hindu Republic. That never happened and could not happen.

It is fallacious to continuously raise the bogey of Hindu priesthood being caste based and abhorrent. Indeed, for a large part it is caste based, but then who cares?

What is this fascinating overawe of wanting to become an impoverished Hindu priest?!

But a word of caution!

Such individuals will have to lose their worldly estates, bank balances etc and should be ready to live as a celibate. It must be remembered that not all Sudras are poor. In Andhra, those who claim to be Sudras are the richest landowners and moneybags of not only their State, but possibly all of India. I have attended such weddings and I was aghast at the opulence and wealth on display!

Further, this may interest those who are not from the priestly class wanting to become Hindu priests.

Brahmin priest from a sudra, dalit or scheduled caste

The ancient examples of Sudra and Chandala like Satyakama and Valmiki becoming Brahmins and great sages are well known (1). Such transformations in people's vocations appear to be numerous where people of non-Brahmin origins (including Sudras) got education in the Shastras (scriptures) and undertook the profession of Brahmins. Moreover, with the exception of a few like Satyakama and Valmiki et al., they mainly are known now only as Brahmins without much information available about their non-Brahmin beginnings.

This change in profession, from non-Brahmin to Brahmin, still continues to take place unabatedly without much public knowledge or debate (2). On rare occasions, the news filters into the media (3) and from it others learn about a person of non-Brahmin caste, interested in pursuing the Brahmin vocation, changing his profession after an adequate preparation and training in Shastras etc. Consider for example the recent case of Manjhi, originally a Dalit, becoming a priest in a famous Hindu temple in Bihar (APPENDIX).

APPENDIX
Dalit priest for Bihar temple (3)

PATNA : A Dalit has been appointed priest of the famous Ram Janaki temple at Paliganj, located at about 60 km from Patna, breaking a three-century-old Brahmin monopoly.
Janardan Manjhi, the newly-appointed priest of the temple is a Musahar, a scheduled caste. In his mid-60s, Manjhi had left his family more than a decade ago to serve in a Dalit temple in Paliganj.

It took temple administrator Kishore Kunal six months to select Manjhi, who is not well-versed in Sanskrit. During this period, temple authorities checked his credentials and his devotion to god. Manjhi will begin his work on Saturday morning, coinciding with Kabir Jayanti on June 30, 2007.

Brahmin priest from a sudra, dalit or scheduled caste by Dr. Subhash C. Sharma
In religions which are structured, the priests have a better lifestyle and comfort.

I was associated with such a seminary.

In Hinduism, hereditary priesthood is not the sole problem and is hardly a matter of real concern. There are more to it and those require more urgent redress.

Caste itself is the bane. Hindus should work diligently to abolish these.

Then there is the question of charity and looking after the poor. I don't think Hindus are the leading lights when it comes to charity.

Let those who clamour to be Hindu priests, first distribute their wealth to charity and uplift the Hindu society if indeed they are so enamoured by Hinduism.

I was reading the book Bin Ladens. It is the story of the complete Bin Laden family. One is impressed at their charitable work at their own expense for their religion. It is mindboggling the manner in which the Saudis, to include their King are so devoted to works that enhances their religion and the immense charitable work that they do for their own coreligionists the world over!

If only the adherents of the other religions were as motivated as them towards charity, the world would be a better place for all!

In Islam too the priesthood is hereditary. Jama Mazjid, Grand Mufti of Kashmir, Mirwaiz of Kashmir, Khadims of Ajmer Sharifand so on!

In short, priesthood does not indicate whether the religion is robust or vibrant.

Charity and devotion to the God and Society that one chooses is what is real Religion!

One should be concerned about the verities of religion and not the rituals and who performs that.

Christianity amongst the major religions is possibly the one where selection to be a priest is democratic. However, organisationally, it is not since it has a structured pecking order.

One the issue of who shall be the next Pope, it is said it could be an African or a Latin American.

However, the Conclave that is to select the Pope is heavily packed with Europeans.
