I am starting this thread to get answers to my few questions, and to gain more information on POK and its importance to india.

1. What is the importance of POK for india in terms to strategy, natural resources (water, minerals) and our access routes to other countries ? As we know keeping control of Indian kashmir gives us the control of water flowing in pakistan. Does POK too has the capability to give such a trump card ?

2. When and how did we actually lost POK, and if it was of any importance for india, how could we be so careless to loose it in first place ?

3. What are the chances or further scenarios in which it would be possible for india to take over POK ?

The importance of POK to India

1)It will give us land access to Afganistan and Tajikistan and hence Russia
2)China will no longer be neighbour of pakistan hence will depend completely of Indian ocean to reach pak.
3)We will get all the high points in kashmir region hence nature fence to the north west region.
4)Our share of river water from indus and other rivers will increase hence will pakistan to take that from the share alloted to sindh and will give rise to insurgency in that region

5)Kashmir will become a peacefull region again due to the reunion of the state.

6)Article 370 giving special status to kashmir can be scrapped, which will lead to full intigration of kashmir with union of india.

Gilgit and Baltistan of Pok are gateway to central Asia for India and southeastern countries similarly it is gateway for central Asian countries to India, South east Asia ,china.i do-not know minerals and waters flows mostly Indian part of Kashmir.so basically it know has become strategic junction as it is know that central Asia is hub of natural resources plus minerals. so who ever Gilgit and Baltistan controls very important part. in past america led western world didn't wanted that USSR to flourish so that never wanted India to occupy that part and hence always supported Pakistan because Pakistan was aligned to their thinking then India . And now china in hunt for natural resource wold never want this part to come in Indian hand and so china would naturally support Pakistan their all weather ally. and we have no one to support as american clout is decreasing although it would never support us.our policymakers in past were short sighted to let Gilgit and Baltistan to pakistan.we should be thank full that at least we had J&K because it source of major river. i don't understand why Pakistan is making rant about Indian part of Kashmir when such an important under their control ; just for water they sign any agreement for that , fools wasting their resource .in last i would say only Gilgit and Baltistan part are important while Azad Kashmir (or pak occupied Kashmir) is of no use or any importance

Note in all this i have ignored geography if any of members have better perspective then please enlighten us

I think this similar thread merits combination.

It has answers to ganesh's first question.

To the second, the wikipedia article on Kashmir will provide a good read. Beware of partisan comments, take them with a pinch of salt and you'll be fine.

Alternatively,

http://www.defenceforum.in/forum/showthread.php/8951-The-1947-48-Kashmir-War?highlight=Kashmir

To the third, limited war and a very foolish, pliant pakistani administration on the other side, coupled with a docile Kashmiri leadership influenced over years by a shrewd Indian media and an even shrewder political leadership, alongwith the ability to hold and maintain foreign territories to a much more augmented degree, which will entail the complete elimination of all the various insurgencies we have going on today. Or otherwise, a doctored plebiscite or referendum. In short, the odds don't look good.

Because, even though in his heart of hearts, the average Kashmiri knows that his economic and political future is far more secured with an ever more prosperous, stable, assertive, assured and secular Indian entity today than it is with a pakistani one, there is this cultural affinity towards other muslims that will keep him bound there. Because even though the average Kashmiri in Emancipated Kashmir, by which I mean the portion of Indian Kashmir that is under India's control today, has realized that now, it will be some more generations before the Indian Kashmiri in pakistani-occupied-Kashmir realizes the same.
