PM promises to make every woman literate in 5 yrs

New Delhi: Prime Minister launched a Rs 6.5 crore literacy mission 'Saakshar Bharat' on International Literacry Day on Tuesday.

Over 30 crore Indians are still illiterate and about half of India's women cannot read or write but that would change in five years, Singh said at the launch.

The PM emphasised that the country could not be "satisfied with status quo".

"The President of India, in her address to Parliament earlier this year, had announced that the Government will recast the National Literacy Mission to make every woman literate in the next five years. Today we take the first step towards fulfilling that promise to our people," he said.

"One-third of India's population still continues to be illiterate. About half of our women cannot still read or write. The number of illiterates in India is probably the highest among all nations of the world," he added.

Singh said persistent illiteracy, particularly among women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, minorities and other disadvantaged groups, was a "challenge that we must face and meet head on".

"We must make our nation fully literate if we want to empower the average citizen and make rapid progress," the Prime Minister said.

He reiterated his Government's commitment to providing good quality education to all and said funds were no "constraint".
"Our Government is committed to providing good quality education to each and every child in our country. Resources will not be a constraint in the quest of achieving this goal.

"Today, as a result of our efforts in the last five years, elementary education is now within the reach of all children in our country. We have increased enrolment and significantly reduced drop-out rate. This has helped us check further accretion to the population of illiterates," he said, referring to the recent Right to Education Act.

"But we need to do much more to reduce and ultimately eliminate illiteracy among the adult population. We need to renew the efforts of the 1980s and the 1990s when we were able to make a significant dent in the problem of illiteracy," Singh emphasised.

Our politicians are very good at making promises. But when it comes to implementation their record is miserable. Our PM has also said he will make Mumbai into Shanghai.

I will believe when they will pass the women's bill in Parliament. Our parliament is a reflection of our male-dominated society which is creating hurdles for passing of women's bill.

Indian babus always have a big mouth ...always make empty promise

Before the PM opened his mouth, had he read any study of feasibility on it? had he estimate how much fund such a plan costs and how many schools should be built?
how can necessar teachers be trained? how can the goverment let the illerated pepole accept such plans?

Low female literacy impeding growth: PM

STAFF WRITER 13:46 HRS IST

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) Noting that low female literacy was impeding growth, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today launched a major initiative in the education sector saying all steps to empower women socially, economically and politically would be taken by the government.

Launching the Saakshar Bharat Mission here, Singh also announced that a National Mission for the empowerment of women would be set up soon.

While the Cabinet has already decided to amend the Constitution to provide 50 per cent reservation to women in panchayats and local bodies, the Self Help Group movement would be "expanded by restructuring and revitalising the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh", he said.

Observing that about half of Indian women were still not able to read or write, Singh said "a National Mission for the empowerment of women is being set up.

Exactly, Indian babus don't know how to calculate how much funds they need to educate women. I'm sure they didn't do any feasible studies as well, the 6.5 crore figure might have been taken out of the babu's a$$ one fine day. I'm waiting for CCP people to teach these guys how to do all these :blum3:.

On a serious note, Indian babus are the most capable guys who can do wonders if only politicians show the will and implement the ideas these babus propose.
