The Tonkin Palace, now the Government Guest House, is a two-story house at 12 Ngo Quyen Street, Trang Tien Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. This used to be the headquarters of the Tonkin government, and is a historical relic of Vietnam.
History
During the French colonial period, this building was the Palace of the North Vietnamese Ambassador.
After the Japanese coup d'etat against France (March 9, 1945), the building was changed to Phu Kham sai Tonkin.
During the August Revolution, the day of the general uprising in Hanoi (August 19, 1945), Viet Minh forces and Hanoi people attacked and occupied this building.
After the August Revolution in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh and the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam returned to work here until the National Resistance Day.[1] During this time, the building was renamed Bac Bo Phu.
At the beginning of the National Resistance, on December 20, 1946, a battle broke out here between a company of the National Guard defending the Tonkin government and the French with tanks supporting them. This was the fiercest and longest battle in the early days of the Indochina War. After 6 waves of attacks were repelled, 122 casualties of legionnaires, losses of 4 tanks and armor, 3 trucks, the assault force captured the building. The number of soldiers of the National Guard died in battle was 45 people.[2]
At the end of the Indochina War (1954), the Tonkin Palace was remodeled and became the Government Guest House.
In 2005, the North was covered with a signboard of revolutionary historical relic.
