Phir Mile Sur is the sequel to Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, the 1988 classic National Integration song. The original brought together eminent personalities from all over the country, of the myriad of ethnicities into one epic song which I remember on the back of my head.
However, this sequel is downright disgusting! It was created by corporate couple Arti and Kailash Surendranath, and if you give it a couple of views, you'll see how they sold tickets to people who want to appear in the song. People who have little relevance took the place of more deserving ones.
What was intended to be a national integration song, turned into a complete Bollywood song with a few traces of artists from other languages. Sports personalities were given a very short mention, virtually nobody from other areas which were instrumental in India's image-building.
Where is President Kalam? Where's Rajavardhan Singh Rathore? Sachin Tendulkar? Ambanis? Narayan Murthy? So many prize-winning novelists? Instead we get to see people like Deepika Padukone, the Bachchan parivar, Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, etc. Seriously.
If you recall correctly, film personalities in the original were only part of the song, not the backbone of it. Even those few actors were neatly dressed in saris, safaris, etc. Here you get to see Deepika Padukone showing off her legs in a wet backwaters setting. It's almost as if Bollywood Inc. wants to impose itself on the viewers, and preach them about people who according to them 'really matter', to make it to this song.
