MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines will buy 12 South Korean FA-50 fighter jets to strengthen its poorly-armed military, government spokesmen said Wednesday, January 30, amid increasing maritime tensions with China.

The FA-50s will be the first fighter jets to be operated by the Philippine air force since it retired the last of its US-designed F-5 fighters in 2005, said President Benigno Aquino's spokesman Edwin Lacierda.

"We don't have any existing jets right now that are in use, therefore it is necessary for us to upgrade. This is part of the ongoing process of modernising our military hardware," he told reporters.

Lacierda said the jets would be used for "training, interdiction and disaster response" and would use their aerial cameras to survey areas.

He stressed that the planned purchase was "not aimed at any particular country" despite the new tensions with China over conflicting maritime territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Defence department spokesman Peter Galvez said the FA-50 was chosen because it fitted all the country's requirements and because of its cost, adding that 18.9 billion pesos (US$464 million) had been budgeted for their acquisition.

Manila will now begin negotiations for the aircraft, he said, adding that the government will seek to have two planes delivered as soon as possible so Filipino pilots can begin training on them.

In recent months the cash-strapped Philippines has stepped up efforts to modernise its military in the face of increasing Chinese assertiveness in pressing its claims to most of the South China Sea.

Although the Philippines has long relied on its defence ties with the United States for most of its arms, it has recently been seeking more weaponry from other countries like Poland, Spain, Italy, Canada and France.

All countries around SCS will undergo military upgrade. China one day might have to face combined assault from them. The Chinese will be swamped.

The FA-50 is the most advanced version of the T-50. It equips a modified Israeli EL/M-2032 pulse-Doppler radar with further Korean-specific augmentations by LIG Nex1,[26] and has more internal fuel capacity, enhanced avionics, a longer radome and a tactical datalink.[27][28] The augmentations increased the range of the radar on FA-50 by two-third compared to the radar version on the TA-50.[29] The EL/M-2032 was initially chosen over Lockheed Martin's preferred AN/APG-67(V)4 radar or the SELEX Vixen 500E AESA radar. Other AESA radars such as Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar and Northrop Grumman's Scalable Agile Beam Radar are options for future production,[30][31] and will likely be shared with the same AESA radar chosen for the USAF and ROKAF F-16 fighters.[5] Samsung Thales is also independently developing a domestic multi-mode AESA radar for FA-50.[32] In December 2008, South Korea awarded a contract to Korea Aerospace Industries to convert four T-50s to FA-50 standards by 2012. In 2012, The Republic of Korea Air Force has ordered 20 FA-50 fighters to be delivered by the end of 2014.[5]

What exactly is the role of this plane? It has an excellent Radar, but a very low thrust engine, which will make unsuitable for dogfights. Also its MTOW seems unrealistic.

in that case, pick then:

Johnson South Reef Skirmish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Johnson South Reef Skirmish of 1988 (Chinese: 赤瓜礁海战; pinyin: Chìguā jiāo hǎizhàn; Vietnamese: Hải chiến Trường Sa?) was a naval battle that took place between Chinese and Vietnamese forces over Johnson South Reef in the Spratly Islands on March 14, 1988.
Soon after the PLA stormed the Johnson South Reef, a skirmish began between the Vietnamese troops and PRC landing parties on March 14, 1988. Within a year, the PLA took over seven reefs and rocks of the Spratly Islands.[3]

There was a very slight adjustment of the land border, resulting in Vietnam giving China part of its land which were lost during the battle, which caused widespread complaints within Vietnam. Vietnam's official news service reported the implementation of the new border around August 2001.

By the way the sino vietnam clash lasted between 79-88. You will do well read about the entire war. Not just the just the first clash.

Purchase of New Fighter Jets Not Motivated by Sea Row — Palace

Purchase of new fighter jets not motivated by sea row — Palace | News | GMA News Online | The Go-To Site for Filipinos Everywhere

Malacañang on Wednesday denied that the Philippines' acquisition of 12 fighter jets from South Korea is motivated by its escalating territorial dispute with China.

"It's not aimed at any particular country," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a briefing.Instead, Lacierda explained that the purchase of new jets is part of the administration's bid to modernize the military.

"It is really primarily our obligation to modernize our military hardware. We don't have any existing jets right now that are in use, therefore, it is necessary for us to upgrade based on our commitment to upgrade our military hardware," he said. The FA-50s will be the first fighter jets to be operated by the Philippine air force since it retired the last of its US-designed F-5 fighters in 2005, said Lacierda

Fighter jets won't matter if they don't have a modern navy.
