ISLAMABAD: Just as Pakistan was celebrating the launch of Chinese investments worth $46 billion in the country, the militant organization Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Monday claimed to have successfully test fired its first indigenously developed missile named as "Omar-1".

To justify its claim, the TTP, which has presence across the country and currently resisting Pakistani troops in the volatile tribal regions on the border with Afghanistan, has issued a statement and posted a video demonstrating the launch of missile.

In the video, different parts of the missile were assembled before its launch. The TTP said that special feature of "Omar-1" is its design.

"It can easily be assembled and dissembled in accordance to the situation," said Muhammad Khurassani, the TTP spokesman. Khurassani said the effectiveness of the specially-designed missile would certainly surprise the targeted enemy. "With the grace of God, you'll soon see our enemies on the run," he said.

The spokesman further said that engineering unit of the TTP has the capability to develop modern lethal weapons. "We are training our fighters to get maximum results from the use of technology, including suicide vests, suicide vehicles, hand grenades, anti-jammer devices and so on.

Pakistan claims to have killed around 2000 militants in the military offensive launched against them in the troubled North Waziristan and Khyber tribal regions last year. The operations, that still continue, had caused exodus of more than 1.5 million people.

Since engaging the militants on ground, Pakistan's military failed to have arrested or killed any high profile militant leader.

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan has granted approval for assigning a division of Pakistan Army's special security for the protection of Chinese citizens working in Pakistan, President Mamnoon Hussain told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, during a one-on-one meeting.

The Army has created a special security division for the protection of Chinese engineers, project directors, experts and workers employed on various Chinese funded projects across Pakistan, the president said.

Sources said the Chinese president during talks with Pakistani leadership had raised the issue of security for the Chinese professionals working in Pakistan.

For the Chinese there is a difference.

It's the same thing, not much difference.

The Pakistani militant organization Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, also referred to as the Pakistani Taliban, reportedly has claimed to have test-fired its first independently developed missile called "Omar-1".

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Pakistani militant organization Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also referred to as the Pakistani Taliban, has claimed to have test-fired its first independently developed missile called "Omar-1," The Times of India reports.

According to the Indian daily, TTP has issues a statement and a video demonstrating the assembly and successful launch of the missile.

"It [Omar-1] can easily be assembled and dissembled in accordance to the situation,"
TTP spokesman Muhammad Khurassani was quoted as saying by The Times of India on Tuesday. Khurassani added that the missile's effectiveness will put the enemies of the Pakistani Taliban "on the run."

The spokesman also said that the militants are actively training their fighters to adapt to the use of the new technology, including suicide vests, hand grenades and "anti-jammer devices."

The Taliban is a militant group founded in the 1990s seeking to establish sharia law in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The group is known to have carried out multiple terror attacks against authorities and civilians, many of them children, in both countries.

The Pakistani Taliban, or TTP, is an umbrella organization of various Islamist militant groups based in northwestern Pakistan, along the Afghan border. It includes most, but not all, Pakistani Taliban groups.

In December 2014, the Pakistani Taliban attacked an army-run school in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, killing some 130 people, mostly children.

Taliban announce their spring offensive in Afghanistan
By LYNNE O'DONNELL
Apr. 22, 2015 8:15 AM EDT

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban said Wednesday their spring offensive in Afghanistan will begin this week, the first time the insurgents' annual campaign against the Afghan government will take place without NATO troops on the battlefield.

In past years, spring and the melting of snow on the mountains along the border with Pakistan marked a significant upsurge in the fighting between the Taliban and NATO forces along with their local allies. This fighting season, the insurgents will face just Afghan forces after the withdrawal of most international combat troops at the end of last year.

A Taliban statement, which was emailed to media, said the offensive — dubbed "Azm" or perseverance in Dari and Arabic — will begin on Friday. It added that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as the Taliban call themselves, is "determined to prolong the ongoing jihad," or holy war.

The statement also said that under U.S. leadership, the "crusaders" will maintain "control of our land and space" through security agreements with the Afghan government. The agreements allow NATO and the U.S. to keep a limited number of non-combat troops in Afghanistan to train and assist Afghan forces in their fight against the insurgency.

"For the complete liberation of our beloved homeland from the yoke of foreign occupation and for the implementation of Islamic rule throughout the country, the Islamic Emirate is determined to prolong the ongoing jihad against the foreign invaders as well as their internal stooges," the Taliban said.

In recent weeks, attacks in the north and east of the country have intensified in the build-up to the warm weather fighting season. The insurgents can be expected to fight until snow falls on the Hindu Kush, when the militants return to the mountains. Fighting even stops in many places for meals and prayers.

But after more than a decade of war, the Taliban appear no closer to their goal of overthrowing the Kabul government.

This has opened up an opportunity for what is perceived to be an affiliate of the Islamic State group, which already controls large parts of Iraq and Syria, to establish a small presence in Afghanistan. The development has alarmed many Afghans, including influential warlord Ismail Khan, former governor of western Herat province, who called on President Ashraf Ghani to improve security and kickstart a moribund economy to avoid a war with an IS offshoot.

Afghan forces have been fighting local Taliban in southern Helmand province for more than two months now, hoping to dislodge them from one of their bastions ahead of the spring offensive. Fighting has been fierce as the insurgents seek to protect supply lines for men, guns and drugs that provide a major source of their funding. Helmand's opium crop accounts for most of the world's heroin supply.

Despite the nascent IS presence, the Taliban also appear to be spreading their own influence to areas where they have not had a significant presence in the past. In northern Samangan province, police said that a firefight broke out late on Tuesday when they surrounded a house where Taliban fighters were holding a meeting.

Sediq Azizi, spokesman for the provincial governor, said Afghan security forces killed a Taliban commander identified as Mullah Bashir along with four other insurgents. One policeman was killed, he said, and another two were wounded. Bashir's mother was also wounded, he said.

In eastern Nagharhar province, where the Taliban have long been active, Ahamd Zia Abdulazai, spokesman for the provincial governor, said that a prosecutor and his driver were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Behsud district.

On Tuesday, a bomb blast near a police station in the southern city of Kandahar killed three people and wounded 17, while a separate bomb killed one person and wounded five in the north, in Kunduz province. Kandahar province is the heartland of the Taliban insurgency — and the city was the capital of the extremists' government from 1996-2001.
