Chinese weapons winning battle for int'l market

Effective, affordable armaments prove popular with developing countries:horn:

Chinese-made armaments have become increasingly popular in the international market, according to an industry insider. (suspense)

"We have observed several successive years of good revenue from the export of our products, and the sales figures keep rising year-on-year, "Liu Song, deputy general manager of research and development at China North Industries Corp, popularly abbreviated as Norinco, told China Daily at the 10th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. The show, which closed on Sunday, was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong province.

As the export wing of China North Industries Group Corp, the country's biggest developer and maker of land armaments, Liu's company brought to the exhibition 44 weapons in six categories, including armored vehicles,anti-tank missiles and multiple rocket launchers.

"Our exhibits cover almost all weapons an army would probably need," Liu said. "We came here with two goals: showing the achievement of technological innovation made by China's ground weapon industry, and making more people know our products.":basanti:

Having retained traditional clients in South Asia and Middle East regions, Norinco has been successful in winning new buyers in Africa and South America, according to Liu.

"The demand for our products from emerging markets continues to expand, and now a lot of foreign armies are coming to us," Liu said. Here fused to reveal details such as buyers' identities and sales volume, citing the company's confidentiality policy.

Among the exhibits Norinco displayed at the show, the VT-4 main battle tank, was arguably the biggest star.

Formerly designated as MBT-3000, the tank features superb mobility and strong firepower as well as a cutting-edge data exchange network, Liu said.

According to Western military publications, the VT-4 is equipped with an electronic-controlled diesel engine with 1,200 horsepower, giving the tank a cruise speed of 68 kilo-meters per hour. Its main gun is a 125-mm smoothbore that can fire various shells, including a kinetic energy penetrator and high explosive anti-tank warhead. In addition, it can also fire anti-tank missiles with a maximum range of 5,000meters.

"It has an advanced fire-control system, a new-type active protection system and a state-of-the-art fully automatic transmission device," he said. "In addition, the inter-unit network connects commanders of tanks and armored vehicles under a combat group, enabling them to share battlefield data in real time."

The VT-4 can compete with any first-class tank used by Western militaries such as the United States' M1A2 Abrams and Germany's Leopard 2A6, Liu said, adding that Russia's T-90 is no match for the Chinese tank in terms of technology.:der:

Other weapons Norinco highlighted at the show included the PLZ-52, a new-generation, 155 mm self-propelled howitzer whose predecessor sold well in the Middle East, and the HJ-12 anti-tank missile, which has fire-and-forget capability and can even hit a helicopter flying at slow speed.

"Many of our products were specifically designed for the overseas market. Their capabilities are as good as those of Western weapons, but the prices are much more competitive," Liu said.:blah:

Anthony Cordesman, a national security analyst at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Bloomberg: "The Chinese systems are simply cheaper, they are reliable and they are tailored to the conditions of developing countries. As the systems get more sophisticated, they will under-cut Europe and the US and compete with Russia."

During a promotion in August in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, diplomats, military officials and defense contractors from 44 countries were given a field performance by Norinco's VT-4 tanks and combat vehicles.

"Several countries have expressed interest in the VT-4 after their officials saw the tank display, and we are negotiating with them on this matter," Liu said.

Chinese weapons winning battle for int'l market - People's Daily Online (Ps: Chinese source)

Nobody can match the arrogant propaganda of PRC!!! kinda feels like reading an article from NoKo.
I usually feel the same when reading Times of India or HT articles about Indian weapons systems that (unlike the VT-4) haven't even completed testing yet; but are suddenly "world class" or "prestigious" or part of an "elite club".

Nationalistic media will always tout indigenous weapons systems in their publications. That's a phenomena not unique to China OR INDIA. Russian, French, British or even American media outlets are all guilty of this.

Whether that qualifies as "arrogant propaganda" is up for debate, but I wish people on this forum would ease up on demonizing China for things their own countries do. "NoKo"? Pleeeeeease!

ZTZ-99 series have some very serious design flaws, and IMHO Chinese are not aware of them because they repeat these design flaws with all their designs.

1st: Turret geometry is not good for current turret armor distribution. Armor distribution on Chinese tanks is same as in Soviet (Russian/Ukrainian) designs, however turret geometry is closer to western tanks, this makes Chinese tanks highly vurnabale to hits in side armor that is not well angled to be covered by frontal armor within safe manouvering angles (frontal arc, +/- 0-30 degrees from turret longitudinal center axis), also turret roof that is ~70mm thick is not well angled and is highly exposed in all ZTZ-99 variants.

2nd: Because ZTZ-99 to ZTZ-99A1 use very specific front turret modular composite armor, there is more RHA and big air gap for mounting bolts instead of composite insert. Also it is not certain if ZTZ-99 to ZTZ-99A1 variants use ERA, not regular geometry of externally mounted cassettes/plates suggest that this is not ERA but some kind of bolted on addon armor, maybe ceramic or HHS.

3rd: Side hull protection is only basic, 80mm RHA side hull armor + few mm non ballistic skirts without any additional protection (ERA or otherwise).

Some of these drawbacks seems to been adressed in ZTZ-99A2 and improved, like absence of modular front turret armor, instead there is semi modular composite armor as in 90-95% of modern MBT's. Also it seems that vehicle is equipped with ERA.

ZTZ-99 series are not bad tanks, but besides ZTZ-99A2, earlier variants are more comparabale to T-72B than to more modern vehicles.

Also ammunition storage system is similiar to T-72/T-90 series, and share it's vurnabilities.

But make no mistake, it is not wise to underestimate these vehicles, also Arjun Mk1 is still not perfect and share one drawback with ZTZ-99 series, this is armor distribution over turret sides and turret geometry.

Does Pakistan Rely on China for High-Tech Armour in Decades-Old Stand-Off With India?

While China remains one of the major suppliers of defence equipment to Pakistan along with the US, in recent years, Beijing has enhanced the military capability of India’s arch rival with upgrades and supplied state-of-the-art equipment. On 12 April, shells fired by a Pakistani weapons system damaged several houses and injured people in the Indian part of Kashmir. The ongoing firefight between the two arch-rivals started on 6 April but surprised many this time, as shells fired from the Pakistani side landed deep inside the villages of Kupwara in Indian-administered Kashmir. A former Indian Army Brigadier and defence analyst, Rahul Bhonsle, believes that it is China which completely overhauled the capability of Pakistan and the ‘China Pakistan axis’ presents a formidable challenge. “The China Pakistan axis is no doubt a major challenge for India, given the close integration of Chinese weapons systems such as tanks, combat aircraft and the sharing of technology on tactical nuclear weapons, amongst others. Pakistan in some ways has become a test lab for the Chinese weapons,” the military observer told Sputnik. Defence trade figures published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute have revealed that China has solely replaced the entire fall in US-Pakistan defence trade in the past five years. China has been supplying defence equipment to Pakistan since the 1960’s and increased its share in the total Pakistani defence arsenal to around 60 percent in recent years. Besides nuclear-capable missiles, armoured capability has gained prime importance in collaboration between the two countries. Pakistan’s capacity in terms of main battle tanks (MBT), with approximate 2,400 in the field, is said to be diverse, with three Chinese-made tanks. Pakistan’s MBTs include 1,100 Al-Zarrar tanks, based on the Chinese Type 59 MBT, as well as 50 T-54/T-55, 400 Type-69 tanks, 350 Al-Khalid tanks, and the country is set to roll out Chinese-made VT-4 tanks. Pakistan is also working on a more advanced version of the al-Khalid III MBT. “China may at times to come provide Pakistan with front line Type 99 tanks but Pakistan may not have the resources to acquire the same. Pakistan’s inventory of a large mix of tanks from Al Zarrar to Khalid T-80 etc, is an outcome of a lack of funds and a mix-and-match approach, which will remain a major challenge in the future as well,” Bhonsle added. A review of weapons classifications shows that Pakistan is militarising its skies (48 percent of total arms import) at an unprecedented rate but at the same time, armoured vehicles and artillery have constituted around 20 percent of total arms imports since 2010. It is also upgrading most of the tanks and enhancing their capability to attack any time of day, while India is playing catch-up. “India is mainly relying now on the tried and tested T-90 S and upgraded T-72. These are versatile and have the capability to meet the challenge posed by the Pakistan armour. Gradual upgrades of these in terms of nigh fighting, fire control and armament may be the way ahead,” Bhonsle replied when asked whether the Indian Army should also diversify its tanks. Last December, media reports claimed that Pakistan’s army had inked a deal with China’s Northern Industries Corporation (NORINCO) to procure artillery guns for deployment along the Indian border. The two countries also inked a deal to overhaul Pakistan’s main battle tank, the Type 85-IIAP. “India had a good option of developing indigenous Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCV) but at present there are no current developments that are known. While upgrading the current generation on the fly for enhanced capabilities, India may also look at the Russian Armata in case it is not serious about the FRCV project,” Rahul Bhonsle said, suggesting ways to improve the nation’s armoured capability. India has approximately 3,300 main battle tanks: 1,900 T-72M1, 1,000 T-90S, and around 500 T-90SM. The Indian army has also inducted the domestically-produced Arjun MK-I but hopes to address some technical issues before rolling out a more capable version of the Arjun. Nevertheless, Indian Army chief M. M. Naravane has indicated that country is moving away from the “military icons of the 20th century”, like tanks, fighter aircraft and primarily looking at the possible induction of laser and directed-energy weapons. “In the five-odd decades since — in Iraq, Lebanon, Georgia, Chechnya and Syria, armoured formations have either followed, supported the application of air power and artillery, or else their units and sub-units have been committed in smaller tactical groupings as part of infantry-armour assaults in urban terrain,” Naravane said in March of this year while speaking at an event in Delhi. In future warfare, Pakistan and China have also been working on the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles including the Caihong-5 and Wing Loong-I. “Pakistan’s military, despite having fewer assets, is conventionally not inferior to the Indian military. Moreover, given its inter-operability with the People’s Liberation Army, when it is offered cyber, space and Electronic Warfare support, the balance may tip in Pakistan’s favour. Complacency will not help the Indian Army,” Praveen Sawhney, a former military officer and author of several books on military affairs said. Ultimately it is the man behind the gun that is important, as was proved by the Indian Centurion who outgunned the Pakistan Patton in 1965, but “we cannot rest on past laurels;” Rahul Bhonsle, who has had a distinguished service career lasting over 30 years, concluded.

Is money available to buy this ? Or China will give it to Pakistan at cut rate price just to maintain power balance with India?
This may not come.Pakis will most probably purchase the OPLOT M tanks from Ukraine which are pretty good.
But they can't do much to have an edge over India atleast in armoured formations.By 2025 they will have 500 Al-khalid and 500 OPLOT M and t-84 tanks at best under ideal circumstances, compared to India's 2400+ T-72 upgraded and 2000+ T-90 and 300 Arjun(mk1 and MK2).

That is 4-5x bigger tank modern tank force.

I have not factored pakistani type 59 and Al-Zarrar tanks because they are too old for any offensive or defensive action. An RPG-7/29 can take them out.

China reportedly begin delivery of modern VT4 main battle tanks to Pakistan
Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co.,Ltd., subsidiary of China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO), reportedly begins delivering new VT4 main battle tanks to Pakistan.

In mid-April 2020, at the Chinese tank factory located in Baotou in the province of Inner Mongolia, was held the ceremony of shipment of the first batch of VT4 main battle tanks equipped with explosive reactive armour (ERA) (Option FY-IV) for a foreign customer.

Chinese media reported that Pakistan is a foreign customer for these tanks that were produced after the country begin emerges from the coronavirus crisis.

In 2019, the Pakistan Army Armoured Corps has selected the Chinese VT4 tank – produced by Norinco – to meet requirements for procuring hundreds of new main battle tanks.

A military analyst, Muzammil Hatami announced the selection of the Norinco VT4 for increasing of Pakistani armoured vehicle fleet.

“VT4 has confirmed for future Pakistan army tank and Alkhalid II main battle tank is in developing phase,” – said Muzammil Hatami during 10th International IDEAS defense exhibition in Karachi, Pakistan.

The VT4 is a third-generation MBT offered for export by Norinco. It is an improvement over the Al-Khalid MBT (also known as MBT-2000), which is currently in service with Pakistan Army, although it retains the 125 mm main gun, carousel auto-loader, and crew configuration of the older vehicle.

Despite the fact that the future tank’s tender details kept at a secret, it was reported that Pakistan might procure around 100 MBTs in order to meet the deficiency of MBT production in the country.

Last week also it was reported that the Nigerian Army has taken delivery of a shipment of military vehicles from the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).

According to local sources, NORINCO delivered the first of 17 military vehicles compromising of VT4 main battle tanks, SH5 105mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers and ST1 tank destroys.

The deliveries will complete by 2024. The payment of ~1$ Billion is for initial batches as order may expand further. #HIT has already been upgraded to support and even modify #VT4 tank fleet.

Pakistan Army inducts powerful VT-4 tanks with ultra-modern technology
Strengthening its armoured divisions, Pakistan Army has inducted Chinese origin third generation Main Battle Tank VT-4 equipped with start of the art technology. According to ISPR, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Field Firing Ranges near Jhelum today and witnessed demonstration of the new induction after recent induction of indigenously produced Al-Khalid-1 Tank.

“This potent war fighting machine will be employed in offensive role by strike formations after induction,” read the statement of military’s media wing.

VT-4 is compatible with any modern tank in the world integrating advanced armour protection, maneuverability, fire power capabilities and state of the art technology.

Interacting with the officers and men, COAS expressed satisfaction over demonstrated performance of Tank VT-4, another addition to inventory of Armoured Corps.

It has further strengthened Pakistan’s overall defence capability to thwart enemy designs, the army chief said, adding: “Pakistan Army is alive to emerging challenges and regional threats”.

“We are completely focused towards internal and external challenges to defence of country and prepared with matching response against all threats to sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Pakistan,” COAS said.

He lauded troops for professionalism, operational readiness and highest training standards to meet challenges of modern day battlefield requirements.
