Pakistan, Russia allies in every sense of word: Putin
* Russian PM says despite global recession, Pak-Russia trade has improved
* Gilani, Chinese premier reiterate resolve to further strengthen strategic ties in trade, energy, other areas
DUSHANBE: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that a number of Russian companies were interested in investing in Pakistan's various sectors. "Pakistan and Russia are allies in every sense of the word," he maintained.
Putin appreciated Pakistan's efforts and sacrifices in the war against terrorism and extremism. He said despite the global recession, the trade between Pakistan and Russia had improved and picked up over the last eight months.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who met on the sidelines of the ninth Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) Heads of Government Council (HGC) hosted by Tajikistan, deliberated in detail on the prospects as well as the ways and means to further strengthen their relations through increased trade and economic interaction and cooperation in various fields.
Gilani and Putin, who also discussed the regional situation, were unanimous in their view that peace and security were vital for enhanced economic development and prosperity of the people of this region. Gilani was assisted by Water and Power Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Syed Naveed Qamar, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and other senior officials. Putin expressed his sympathies and condolences over the huge losses caused by the recent floods in Pakistan and said Russia was quick to respond and provide support to the government of Pakistan in its relief and recovery efforts.
Gilani thanked the Russian PM for his country's support and assistance after the devastating floods hit Pakistan in the summer, affecting over 20 million people. Gilani also extended invitation to his Russian counterpart for an official visit to Pakistan.
The PM recalled his last meeting with the Russian leader in Beijing in October 2009 and noted good progress in the bilateral relations, including high-level contacts.
Mutually-beneficial: He said, "Pakistan seeks a comprehensive partnership with Russia and is prepared to invest in developing mutually-beneficial relations between the two countries for the shared goals of peace, stability and prosperity in the region."
The PM said he believed that their interests at most of the strategic, political and economic planes converged, adding that there were complementarities that must be utilised optimally to mutual advantage.
Strategic ties: Also on Thursday, Prime Minister Gilani and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao reiterated the resolve to further strengthen their strategic ties in trade, economy, energy, defence and other areas.
The two leaders, who had a brief meeting on the sidelines of the ninth SCO Heads of Government Council (HGC) meeting, had a frank exchange of views on a variety of subjects, including bilateral relations, regional situation as well as matters of international importance.
Both the leaders noted that Pakistan and China enjoyed exemplary relationship with high degree of mutual trust, understanding and convergence of views on various regional and international issues.
Premier Gilani thanked the Chinese premier for his country's generous assistance in the relief and recovery efforts of the Pakistan government as well as their support in the reconstruction of affected areas. The PM said the year 2011, being the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China, should jointly be celebrated with year-long events, as the Pakistan-China Friendship Year. app
