India on Friday termed “completely unacceptable” actions by Pakistan in regard to Gilgit-Baltistan and asserted it can neither camouflage Islamabad’s illegal occupation of part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir nor hide the denial of basic rights to the people in that part for the past six decades.

“The entire State of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India by virtue of its accession to India in 1947. Any action to alter the status of any part of the territory under the illegal occupation of Pakistan has no legal basis whatsoever, and is completely unacceptable,” Vishnu Prakash, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said here in a statement.

‘Fifth province’

The spokesperson said India has seen the reports of the so-called Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan in which he said that the area had become the ‘fifth province’ of Pakistan and henceforth had no connection to Kashmir.

Last September, India had lodged a protest with Pakistan over its package for the Northern Areas through the “Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order, 2009.” Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner was then summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs and handed over the diplomatic letter of protest.

In a statement last September, the Ministry emphasised that the “entire State of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India by virtue of its accession in 1947. The so-called “Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order, 2009” was yet another cosmetic exercise intended to camouflage Pakistan’s illegal occupation.”

Three killed in Pakistani-administered Kashmir bombing

Three killed in Pakistani-administered Kashmir bombing

Three soldiers have been killed and 11 injured in a suicide bombing outside an army barracks in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, police say.

No group has claimed the attack, which occurred in Tarakhal, near the town of Rawalakot, close to the line of control with Indian-administered Kashmir.

Kashmir is disputed between the two countries.

Pakistan's portion has been largely free of violence, although eight Shia Muslims died in an attack last month.

The area is home to camps of Sunni militant groups fighting in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Rare attacks

"The bomber detonated the explosives as he saw the soldiers coming out of their barracks," news agency Reuters quoted Javed Iqbal, chief of police in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, as saying.

Nearly all the dead and injured are reported to be army soldiers. The wounded have been shifted to hospitals in Rawalakot, police said.

Pakistani-administered Kashmir has been home to dozens of militant groups for nearly two decades but such militant attacks are not common in the area, the BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says.

In November, three would-be suicide bombers blew themselves up in the regional capital, Muzaffarabad, when they were chased by the police.

All three appeared to be non-Kashmiri men from their appearance and language, police said.

On 12 December, a Muharram procession of local Shia Muslims was attacked in Muzaffarabad, killing at least eight people.

In June, a suicide bomber targeted soldiers near in Muzaffarabad, killing two soldiers and injuring three others.

Tuesday's blast is the first outside of Muzaffarabad.
