A former CIA official has said Pakistan is probably the most dangerous country for the world as it is ripe with threats of terrorism, a failing economy and the fastest growing nuclear arsenal.

“While Pakistan is not the most dangerous country in the world, it is probably the most dangerous country for the world, and as such, a serious case for close and continued US engagement with Pakistan can be made,” Kevin Hulbert, a former top intelligence officer who retired in June 2014 , wrote in an op-ed in The Cipher Brief.

“As a country ripe with the triple threat of terrorism, a failing economy, and the fastest growing nuclear arsenal, Pakistan has the potential to create more nightmare scenarios for US policymakers than any other country,” Hulbert said.

Hulbert previously served multiple overseas tours as CIA chief of station and deputy chief of station.

The CIA official went on to say, “Like it or not, Pakistan is similar to a bank or company considered too big to let fail because of the ripple effect it might cause across the entire economy.”

Claiming that the spectre of the sixth largest country in the world being a failed state is a hypothetical catastrophe that would unleash a world of unintended consequences, the ex-CIA official said, “Rather than risk it, and as much as we might like to move on, we really should increase the level of engagement with Pakistan, not decrease it.”

Hulbert said many of the trend lines in Pakistan now seem to be “moving in the wrong direction.”

“For years, Pakistan felt justified in its use of t militias to attack India in a war of attrition,” he continued.

However, Hulbert said, “The good news on Pakistan is that al Qaeda’s core in Pakistan’s troubled Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) is largely destroyed. The US government has decimated al Qaeda and its extremist allies in the Fata, and it is telling that none of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s named successors are located in Pakistan. It is also telling that in order to stay alive, Zawahiri has isolated himself to the point of being irrelevant. He cannot communicate with his followers, he provides no command and control, and it takes him weeks, sometimes months, to respond in any meaningful way to current events.”

Today, Pakistan finds itself in a very complicated security situation where there is little differentiation among radical groups, he noted.

“Terrorist groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, are suddenly allied with al-Qaeda, while Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, the Pakistan Taliban, the Afghan Taliban, and other assorted miscreants and non-state actors are intent on bringing down the elected government of Pakistan,” he added.

And yet they ensure its continued existence.

Don't think Indians should take these type of comments seriously. Pakistan is their most trusted ally since independence. Friendly overtures to India are just for show and business.

Police chief says Islamic State active in Sindh

http://tribune.com.pk/story/971987/police-chief-says-daish-active-in-sindh/

ISLAMABAD: The Sindh police chief said on Monday that the Islamic State group was active in the province and that the ultra-extremist Middle Eastern group had links with the banned sectarian militant outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).

Briefing a parliamentary panel on Monday, Inspector General of Police Ghulam Hyder Jamali shared details of the arrested suspects and their alleged involvement in terrorism, particularly the Safoora bus attack, which had left more than 40 members of the peaceful Ismaili community dead in Karachi on May 13.

“They [the suspects] wanted to set up a self-styled caliphate in Pakistan,” Jamali told the Senate Standing Committee on Interior. He said investigations into the Safoora carnage revealed that Abdul Aziz, the kingpin of the group, had escaped to Syria and was involved in almost all the recent terror attacks along with his lieutenant Azhar Minhas.

“These two most-wanted men are affiliated with the LeJ and are influenced by late Islamic scholar Dr Israr Ahmad’s philosophy of Islamic caliphate.”

The police chief said the two men were associated with al Qaeda for the past four to five years and with IS, also known by its Arabic acronym Da’ish, for the last one year.

He said the arrested Safoora attack suspects had confessed to carrying out at least 37 major terror attacks. Of the 14 suspects, eight have been arrested with the help of GSM locators, he added. “Aziz had started reconnaissance two months before the May 13 attack.”

The police chief said six laptops were confiscated from the suspects and the police took some time to decrypt the machines. “The suspects were not using mobile phones and kept in touch with each other through computers.”

He claimed that the same group was involved in the assassination of Karachi’s ‘super cop’ SP Chaudhry Muhammad Aslam. He also disclosed to the Senate body that Shia community members were on the hit list of Da’ish.

IGP Jamali said all intelligence agencies and security forces were on the same page to eradicate terrorism from Sindh, which had resulted in an 80% drop in terror attacks and a 53% decline in targeted killings. The Sindh police chief told the committee that his force required Rs28 billion to combat terrorism. The panel, headed by Senator Rehman Malik, unanimously recommended national awards for the slain officials of the Sindh police. The committee also recommended that more GSM locators be provided to the provincial police.

The parliamentary panel was critical of the controversial advertisements published by the Sindh police in some Urdu- and Sindhi-language newspapers. The advertisements claimed that six men had been picked up by ‘unidentified Rangers personnel’ and had gone missing.

The Sindh police chief said the advertisements against those fighting terrorists were inappropriate. The committee directed IGP Jamali to expedite investigation into the case.

Pak army has hijacked the democracy by hijacking and taking over the bureaucracy. All soldiers leaving army and joining administrative posts through civil service at influential level. But orders come from GHQ not Ministry.

With innumerable Madarassas and Terror outfits and nearly half of the people supporting Jihad makes Pakistan the most dangerous country. They must be de-nuked for the sake of world peace.

You cannot de-nuclearize Pakistan because their bureaucracy is infiltrated by ISI and Army. The only way is through Balkanisation.

Ok, at least UN/US/others can pressurize Pakistan for denuclearization via sanctions and various ways, it can be successful but to a degree only.
