Turkey First Indigenous Helicopter Engine to be Ready for Integration This Year
Turkey's first indigenous helicopter engine, that will power the T-625 Gökbey utility helicopter and the ATAK combat chopper will be delivered to Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for integration this year.
“Core of the T-625 helicopter’s engine was tested at TAI,” Mustafa Varank, Industry and Technology Minister, was quoted as saying by Anadolu Ageny Friday.

Gökbey's engine will be delivered to TAI this year, Varank said, adding, "They will start working on the integration of the engine to be used in Gökbey after this delivery."

In September 2018, T-625 rotorcraft powered by two CTS-800-4A turboshaft engines made its maiden flight. Certification trials of the T-625 began last October. Deliveries are scheduled to begin next year.

The T129 ATAK gunship, built by TAI under license from the Italian-British company AgustaWestland, also uses the CTS-800-4A engine.

Earlier, it was equipped with two LHTEC T800-4As built by Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company (LHTEC), a joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. Each engine can produce 1,014 kilowatts of output power. The T800-4A is an export version of the CTS800 engine, which Turkey selected to power Turkish Light Utility Helicopter (TLUH) in 2015.

The US is said to be holding up export permits for the LHTEC T800-4A citing the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) regulatory regime.

Pakistan ordered 30 T129s for $1.5 billion in 2018. Deliveries were being hit due to non-availability of LHTEC engines. “Apparently we shall need US export licenses to go ahead with the T129 deal (with Pakistan). This is not a technological or financial matter but is purely political at the moment,” a senior procurement official told DefenseNews in 2018.

“This is a commercial deal with a country that has friendly relations with America. Why should the Americans punish Pakistan for their disagreements with Turkey?” a Turkish defense official was quoted as saying by the report.

Ismail Demir, Turkey’s President of Defense Industries (SSB), stated on January 6 that the Pakistan Army extended its delivery timeline for the T129 attack helicopter by one year.

Development of the Turkish TS1400 turboshaft engine began in February 2017, and according Quwa, it was slated for induction and serial production by 2025.

“The pressing need to retire its fleet of old 48 Bell AH-1Fs, is now pushing Islamabad to consider alternatives,” Major General Syed Najeeb Ahmed, commander, army aviation, told Defence IQ’s International Military Helicopter conference in London on 26 February.

“We are looking at other options. One of them is in China in the shape of the new attack helicopter they have created called the Z-10ME,” he said. Islamabad is said to have evaluated an earlier version of the CAIC Z-10.

With the domestic CTS-800-4A powering both T129 and T625 almost ready, the deal appears to be back on track.

In December 2019, Filipino Defense Secretary Lorenzana announced that the Air Force was mulling ATAK T129 purchase. Their budget for attack helicopters (estimated at $250 million) could afford eight to 10 units of the aircraft. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) had been singed to pursue negotiations. However, there has been no development since the MoU.

In case you don't know, #Turkey is developing not just one but two new attack helicopters. The new project is T629, a new 6T heli which will fulfill the gap between 5T ATAK 1 and future 10T ATAK 2.

A bit old news I guess, keep in mind: #Pakistan-#Turkey T-129 Atak helicopter engines problem has been solved. US-based Honeywell and UK-based Rolls Royce have been given go-ahead by US government. Production has begun. Deliveries to take place from late 2021 to mid 2022.

It was never going to be a permanent problem now, was it...Expect more warmth towards Pakistan once Trump leaves & Sleepy Joe enters the Oval Office.

A good advice to Turkey, that get your money first or you will never see it. Pakistan is in no position to pay anybody for spare parts let alone new capital equipment. That is the state of their finances. I am sure IMF when allowing additional monetary help will ask the same question.

Turkey says US sanctions will not impact helicopter deal with Pakistan
ANKARA/ ISTANBUL:
Turkey’s top defence industry official said on Tuesday any US sanctions against Ankara would not affect the country’s several existing projects, including a helicopter deal with Pakistan, but could impact other deals with Islamabad such as Pakistan Atak helicopter and Hurjet aircraft projects.

Ismail Demir, the head of Turkey’s Defence Industries Presidency (SSB) said that despite new US sanctions, the defence industry would continue to move forward. “We expect this [sanctions] not to affect our relationships too much,” told reporters after speaking to parliament.

The US on Monday imposed sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defence system. The sanctions, coming under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), target the SSB, including Demir, and three other officials.

Starting on January 20, the incoming US President Joe Biden administration may also bring changes in policy – positive or negative – and the US sanctions could also trigger sanctions from the EU, Demir said, speaking a day after the US announcement.

The SSB chief underlined that the sanctions should not affect existing projects, such as the T70 helicopter, but added that the Pakistan Atak helicopter and Hurjet aircraft projects would probably be affected.

The sanctions will slow down Turkish defence projects related to the US for a short period, but the Turkish defence industry would take advantage of this process and manage to take over production of all critical parts in the long term, he stressed.

“The development of the domestic industry will continue, perhaps even faster. In a sense, this [sanctions] will serve as a flare and a warning,” he said, underlining Turkey’s nearly 70-year NATO membership and Ankara’s relations with fellow members and the US in several areas.

In April 2017, when its protracted efforts to buy an air defense system from the US proved fruitless, Turkey signed a contract with Russia to acquire the S-400 shield. The US opposed their deployment, claiming they would expose next-generation F-35 jets to possible Russian subterfuge.

Turkey to test first indigenous helicopter engine
ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s government-controlled engine maker Tusas Engine Industries has delivered for testing the country’s first indigenous helicopter engine.

The turboshaft TS1400 will power the Gokbey, a twin-engine indigenous light transport/utility helicopter built by TEI’s sister company Turkish Aerospace Industries. TEI launched the TS1400 program in March 2017.

TAI launched the program for the 6-ton, multirole Gokbey helicopter in 2013. In the interim, the Gokbey will be powered by the LHTEC CTS8000 engine. LHTEC is a joint venture between British company Rolls-Royce and American firm Honeywell. The TS1400 will eventually replace the CTS8000.

The TS1400 features a maximum power output of 1,400 shaft horsepower and a shaft output revolution of 23,000 rpm.

The TS1400 was delivered to TAI for testing on Dec. 5. Speaking at a ceremony, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the engine test and design center — inaugurated the same day — would also be used to test future indigenous engines, including a planned engine for the TF-X, Turkey’s first indigenous fighter jet in the making.
Ismail Demir, the head of Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries, said other domestic engine efforts are being driven by programs for drones, light armored vehicles, new-generation main battle tanks and missiles.
Demir said the next phase in the TS1400 program would be serial production of the engine.

Originally Turkey was to supply 30 T129 ATAK to Pakistan, but as US sanctions Turkey under CAATSA there is uncertainty over the CTS800-4A engine manufactured by TEI under licence which is originally a LHTEC product. Turkey is optimistic of indigenous engine soon.
