WASHINGTON: "You don't love us as much as you love India," was the whiny refrain Pakistan brought to the table in its resumed "strategic" dialogue with the United States, underscoring the failure of Obama administration's five-year effort to walk Islamabad away from its India obsession.

In his opening remarks at his meeting with US secretary of state John Kerry on Monday, Pakistan's National Security advisor Sartaj Aziz made addressing Islamabad's concerns about India, particularly the key role US is ceding to New Delhi in Afghanistan, a "pre-requisite" for advancing Pakistan's strategic relationship with the United States.

"There is a strong perception in Pakistan that while a lot of pressure is exerted on Pakistan on issues of concerns to India, our legitimate concerns are not conveyed to India with the same intensity," Aziz complained bluntly, insisting that the United States should stop looking at Pakistan from the two specific lenses of Afghanistan or Terrorism. "These are legitimate US concerns but these must be balanced by giving due importance to Pakistan's own security concerns. There is in fact need for a careful attention to the long term effects of US policies on Pakistan's security," he said.

"If these important pre-requisites are met, then the contribution of other elements of this important relationship such as expanded trade, higher level of private investment, long term partnership on some major projects, will become far more significant and mutually reinforcing," he added, in a clear indication that Pakistan's foreign policy is still driven by its neurotic and India-centric security concerns.

Aziz also said the overwhelming majority of the people in Pakistan support the normalization of our relations with India, but brought in a familiar albatross into the picture saying they believe that the "resolution of the Kashmir dispute would result in achieving this goal." At the same time, he added, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's "bold vision of normalizing relations with India is being pursued with full commitment."

Nothing that Aziz said remotely suggested that Pakistan had moved away from its national security paradigm that is centered around pursuing ''strategic depth'' in Afghanistan arising out of fear of India. Even though Aziz said Pakistan wanted to turn its transactional relationship with the US into a strategic one, there was the usual laundry list of demands as both sides kept up their dissembling, most recently exposed by former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who said in his memoir that he, in effect, kept lying to Congress that Pakistan was an ally when it was anything but.

On his part, Kerry, with a well-chronicled record of funneling vast amounts of aid to Pakistan despite its use of terrorism to further its national security paranoia, spouted the usual bromides. He appreciated the "efforts of the Pakistani government and the civil society to stand up against extremists, and your struggle to develop a Pakistan where every Pakistani has a say and a stake in Pakistan's success against extremism."

The top leadership of Pakistan fully knows what the ground realities they are willing to work with India and they value peace with India. It is some of the people who are having some jingoistic feelings that still think of some fantasies. South Asia is Delhi centered and it stays like that.

Country stands firm on its strengths. Not based on religion, friendship or love. If one has the strength one gains some leverage, if one is weak, better face the reality. No need to whine and complain.

For centuries Indians swallowed the pride and accepted reality.

What a silly nation. Complaining like this!! Pakis, develop your nation, become economically strong. Build heavy industry, and stop this useless terrorism. Crack down on mullahs and madrassas, stop encouraging jihad doctrine. Remove religion from public discourse. Gradually, you will automatically see your nation getting some respect.

Stop whining like beggars, it is embarrassing even to look at!

Lets be a little more accurate. The "civil" leadership is willing to work but this frightens GHQ, Rawalpindi. When back in 2008 Zardari as a newly elected president called Kashmiri insurgents as terrorists instead of the Pakistani default term "freedom fighters" it is said that GHQ and ISI went bonkers saying " Has he gone insane?? He is going against our entire India specific doctrine.". It is also said that the rogue elements of the ISI and PA went on to give support to LeT for 26/11 after this very remark because they knew one such strike would derail the peace process and it did.

AFAIK there is no difference between Military and Political leadership. Political leadership in Pakistan is an extension of Military. Politics are played by GHQ and political leaders are used for that.

Military fully knows the ground situation and they also knows they do not hold enough chips of bargaining regarding the Geopolitical situation in South Asia.

Pakistanis always tired to ride on the backs of either USA or Saudi or China.

In international Arena strategic relationship (no need to call it friendship because there is no such thing in geopolitics) only sustains if both the countries are capable enough or the other power is fully capable of dealing the situation. Other wise the relationship is like China lauding India Pakistan friendship talks.

India needs counter-ops by R&AW in Pakistan. We cant collide military to military. But India should extend the capabilities of RAW to fight covert ops INSIDE pakistan, like eliminating terrorists like hafeez saeed, attacking ISI leaders and resources, creating instability in balochistan etc.
IK Gujral's moronic policy vis-a-vis RAW should be thrown out of the window.
