Amid continued tensions with the US over drone strikes, Pakistanarmy has successfully shot down a "drone" during a military exercise that was watched by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

During the "Azm-e-Nau 4 Exercise" at Bahawalpur in Punjab province yesterday, the army air defence demonstrated its anti-drone technology by successfully bringing down a drone by targeting it with the 35mm Oerlikon guns, The News daily said.

The event also marked the culmination of five-year series of exercises jointly conducted by the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force at firing range in Khairpur Tamewali, about 75 kilometres from international borders.

The drones are an emotional issue in the country and the public opinion has been further divided with the latest strike by a CIA- operated spy plane on Friday that killed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

Pakistani politicians, except a few handful, have criticised the strike saying it was deliberately done to scuttle the peace talks with the Taliban.

However, security analysts and former military officers are happy that Pakistan's number one enemy has been killed.

The drone strike had renewed calls from some sections of the political and religious class to shoot down the US operated unmanned plane.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, who arrived at a helipad near the firing range in Cholistan desert, was received by Kayani.

He himself drove an open army jeep to bring the prime minister to the observation post to witness the demonstration by armoured, artillery, air defence and civil aviation formations of the Pakistan Army and firepower by F-16, JF-17 Thunder, F 7P and Mirage aircraft to repel an attack of enemy forces.

Sharif said the government had made its position clear that drone strikes constituted a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, were violative of international humanitarian laws, besides being counter-productive to its efforts for bringing peace and stability in Pakistan and the region.

He also maintained that his government would not take any foreign dictation to determine its national security policies, saying, the days when the country's policies were determined through telephone calls from abroad are gone.

Not sure about Paki technology ! However, the million $ question here is ? How many battalions will Paki army deploy to counter US drones with their super-duper Anti-Drone weapons ?

Also, how will Paki army know, exactly when and where US Drones will strike ? Do they have radars to recognize US drones ?

Oerlikon guns are also not Paki indigenous tech.

You being our resident Pak expert should have known that the journo meant capability when he/she mentioned technology.

The service cieling of the Predator drones is 7.5 kms. The max altitude the 35mm Oerlikon guns can target is 4 kms. Now all pakistan can wish is that the predators to get close to the 3 kms altitude predator needs to detect single human heat signature.

It means that if Pak wants to assert it's soverignity, they have to put these 35mm guns near the rogue targets which US is going to kill that day or if there are low nummber of 35mm guns available, they can ask the rogues to gather near the 35mm guns. Either they get killed or they will be protected by Pak. First case is fine for everyone.. What will US do if Pak has to take up the latter strategy? :scared2::pound::pound:

What a delusional country.

First you allow drones to operate from your soil, then you start blaming them and all the while providing ground intelligence for successful targeting and now this facade. This is for the common man on the street that their brave army can take down the evil drones from Shaitan America.

But how do they reconcile to the angry protests over killing of the TTP chief

However, security analysts and former military officers are happy that Pakistan's number one enemy has been killed.

Easy peasy. Just put two Oerlikon guns one on top of the other and the bullet will, inshallah, go 8 km. Then how will the Amrikis escape?

if it is real then it is good to hear
It is Chinese drone which they shot down in exercise.

if they (PAF) is really serious they should stop killing of their own citizen and daily rape of its soverignity by taking out Uncles drone.

They can therefore uncle will continue to rape Pak.
