The Pakistan-India defence forces’ one-upmanship continues with the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) announcing it would induct four airborne refuellers based on the Il-78 platform by next year – six years after India acquired six similar aircraft.

Terming midair refuelling capability “extremely significant”, PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Qamar Suleman told Jane’s Defence Weekly: “This is an absolutely new capability we are getting, which we are inducting. We never had this capability in the Pakistan Air Force.”

And, to match the Indian Air Force’s acquisition of the first of three airborne warning and control systems (AWACS), PAF chief Air Chief Marshal Qamar Suleman told Jane’s Defence Weekly that his force would receive four Chinese systems between 2011 and 2012.

Suleman also termed as “alarming” the IAF’s intention of purchasing 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA), saying Pakistan needed “to have something matching”.

“We knew about this requirement of the Indian Air Force for 126 latest-generation fighter aircraft. Yes, it is an alarming development because when they get 126 such capable aircraft, then we also need to have something matching to counter that threat,” the air chief maintained.

The IAF is set to begin field trials later this year of the six combat jets that are in contention for its order, which might even go up to 200 to counter depleting force levels.

The first of the fighters are likely to be inducted in 2012.

Referring to the induction of the JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft co-produced with China, Suleman said the PAF plans to eventually induct up to 250 planes, making it the backbone of its inventory.

However, there was still a requirement for a more advanced fighter aircraft, as the PAF prepares to counter the future edge the IAF may acquire once it completes the planned purchase of 126 MMRCAs, the air chief maintained.

The idiocy of the Pakistani armed forces astounds me.India has better things to do than attack Pakistan...when the heck will they understand that?

First thing that strikes is the ilushin platform. So Russia will sell anything to them. Font be surprised that their "more advanced" jet requirement us filled with a flanker. I'm sure the Russians might have already conveyed to India that if MiG 35 is not chosen they might well offer it to Pakistan. It's going to be a cat and mouse game. But a good game. Pakistan will not be able to survive an Erma race with India.

slightly off the topic

1)This could make MIG a unlikely plane to win the MRCA
2) will Pakistan be able to pay for the MIG's if offered
3) will USA be ok with US taxpayer money paying for Russian MIG's??
4)Why offer the MIG alone they could even offer the Sukhoi

this should be a wake up call and all the rest from t-90's,gorshokov,Brahmos etc...
that we need to diversify our acquisition base and a lackidasical attitude, lack of infrastructure, funding etc..in our own indigenous projects put us in this position.

Yeah, its better to team up with ukraine for continuing its antonov programs than go for illusyns. But first go for a-320 re-fueles the air force has asked for.

I think my doubts have come out to be true, India is trying to defeat the big monster called Pakistan by bankrupting it. Lets put dummy orders for 5 Aircraft Carriers, and wait.

This may not work with USA,China and Saudi Arabia all offering their charity, and now Russians are also in the picture.

Hi guys,

PAF is acquiring IL-78MPs from Ukrainian surplus aircraft stocks and not from Russia as you guys think. Their IL-78s will be fitted with PS-90 engines and UPAZ refuelling pods.

So, please stop casting apprehensions on Russia's intentions and please don't look at everything from the MMRCA angle. The strategic partnership that India and Russia enjoy are unparalleled even by Pak-China partnership. Russia has always been faithful to us and will not do anything to compromise our security. We should also respect them for that and avoid nit picking at them at every opportunity we get.
