WASHINGTON: Stating that Pakistan's nuclear weapon is a "deterrent" against India, the country's top diplomat to the US on Friday expressed willingness to enter into an agreement with New Delhi to phase out all atomic arms possessed by the two countries.

Appearing on the CNN to make a public appeal to the Americans to donate USD five each through cell phone for the refugees of Swat Valley, Pakistan Ambassador to the US Hussein Haqqani insisted that the nuclear weapons of his country are safe and there should be no concern about their security.

"Everybody in the US Government who knows anything about nuclear weapons knows that Pakistan has a very secure nuclear programme. It's a very limited nuclear programme to maintain deterrence vis-a-vis our neighbor," Haqqani told the CNN in an interview.

"At the same time, Pakistan is willing to engage with our neighbour for a comprehensive settlement in which the nuclear weapons can be phased out by both countries," He said.

"Pakistan's nuclear weapons are safe and Pakistan is not going to expand nuclear weapons capability to a point when it becomes a threat to any country in the world, including our neighbours," he said urging the US media not to divert attention from the real issue by raising the question of safety of nuclear weapons of Pakistan.

Haqqani said the United States should not be concerned about the nuclear weapons of Pakistan as this is not a threat to the US. "I don't think Pakistan's nuclear weapons are a threat to the United States. I think the threat to the United States right now comes from terrorists that might be in Afghanistan or in parts of Pakistan. And Pakistan is doing a great job fighting those terrorists right now," he said.

The Pak Ambassador said his country is unlikely to give specific details of its nuclear weapons to the US; despite the fact that it has assured top US leaders that its atomic weapons are secure and there is no need to be concerned about it. "I don't think any country knows or tells the location of all its nuclear weapons to any country in the world," he said.

Haqqani went ahead to link this sharing of information with that of India. "The Soviet Union never did it with the United States until an -- after comprehensive negotiations between the US and Soviet Union started. So whenever that starts between Pakistan and its eastern neighbour, we will move in that direction," Haqqani said.

Its wishful thinking on the part of the Pakistanis that India will get into any agreement of nuclear disarmament. Pak nukes are India specific, Indias is not Pak specific.
Besides, history tells us we cannot trust Pakistan on any issue, so there will not be total disarmament even if India decides to disarm (not chance in hell).

Also America should not get sucked into this Pakistani good boy talk and put any pressure on India. Indian nukes are here to stay.

I dont think nuclear disarmament is going to take place anytime soon in Asia. We can even see US and Rusia destroy their stockpile but no way I will live to see the disarmament in Asia.

Strange, couple of months back somebody made a similar statement at the other place about the prospect of Great Britain doing away with its nukes. Crazy idlers indeed.

Pak knows we can't give up our nukes when nuclear armed China is our neighbour. This is a typical move to show the world that Pak is co-operative and willing to give up its nukes, but evil India next door won't give her nukes up, so pak is forced to retain her nukes for self-preservation.

Pak will give up nukes if India gives up nukes. India will give up nukes if China gives up nukes. China will give up nukes if USA and Russia gives up nukes. Russia will give up nukes if Nato, and maybe Israel, gives up nukes.

So we have only to wait for NATO to disarm, and we'll have a nuke free world!

Only about 20,000 more warheads to go!

Now that their nukes are moved to China or Saudi Arabia away from a possible US Iinvasion they can make a silly offer like this.

The hell, if they are going bankrupt developing these weapons, i say give them more, the economy of scale will always be against them, lets just bury them under a mountain load of debt.

I think Pakistanis should be fined $1 million every time they try to compare themselves to India with shyt like this.

Its Af-Pak now, no more Indo-Pak. The hyphenation is gone forever, never to return.

They should say that they will surrender their nukes if Taliban lays down their AK-47s. That sounds more reasonable to me.

first we were greeted with the news where pakistani scientists complained not enough budgetary allocations are being made by the GoP for the various nuclear projects, a lie which got nailed when came the news where it gets pointed out that pakistan is aggressively adding more nuke weapons to their stock pile and now this. now look at the larger picture, pakistan's economy is in dole drums, they depend on the west for their very basic needs to be fulfilled, add to this the issue of taliban moving in aggressively into islamabad and the fear of these nukes falling in the hands of taliban, quite a heady cocktail but all seems related and hey dont forget the obsession of the democrats with npt and ctbt. with all that in back ground, what better way than to put all this on the shoulders of its long time adversary india and try and get off the limelight. as usual pakistanis have yet again proved they are master at diversionary tactics we are so accustomed to but something the world is waking up to only now.

india has a very clear stand on the issue, either the entire world does away with the complete stockpile of the nuke weapons or the status quo remains and from the looks of it no one is interested in doing away with these weapons but yes this is a diplomatic tool which gets well used in international diplomacy as pakistan has just shown. smart chaps pakistanis are but the moot question is, is the world smarter?

nitesh,
this seems like a trap for India set by Obama using his favourite pet Pakistan. Now, that Pakistan has made this 'offer', Obama will put pressure on India to sign CTBT and NPT since there is 'no more nuclear threat' to India!
