Pak principle nuclear threat: Russia
Press Trust of India
Saturday, April 11, 2009, (Washington)

Describing Pakistan as the "principle" nuclear threat to Russia, an eminent foreign policy and security expert has claimed that Moscow would support any US endeavour to take away Islamabad's atomic weapons in case of any destabilisation in the Islamic nation.

Authorities for many years have been indicating that Pakistan was a much more serious problem, both for nuclear proliferation and for nuclear terrorism, than Iran," Alexei Arbatov, Chairman of the Non-Proliferation Programme of Carnegie Moscow Centre, said at a recent seminar here.

"Russia has been living already for more than a decade within reach of Pakistani nuclear missiles and without any means to defend against them. So Russia considered and considers Pakistan to be the principal threat from the point of view of nuclear proliferation," he said.

Arbatov was a member of the Russian Parliament from 1994 to 2003 and Deputy Chairman of the Defence Committee. Author of several books, he is also a member of the Advisory Council to the Foreign Minister and heads a panel on strategic planning for the Scientific Board of the Security Council of Russian Federation.

A lot of Pakistanis (including a loud mouth clown) seem to think that Russia is eager to join forces  with Pakistan. Is there any basis to that?

I am yet to see anything happen on the ground that says that Russia considers Pakistan anything other than a terror heaven and a nuisance.

In "certain" forums people who think like the clown even said that the sale of RD93 engines for the JF-17 ushered in a new era for trade between Russia and Pakistan in the defence sector... and some were even expecting that Pakistan would be sold jets such as the Su-35 and PAKFA in the near future... :113:

Now that's some positive development. But yet I think US will be the main concern for Russia and Russia won't find a way inside Pakistan other than the Afghanistan route.

The funny thing is they are saying the same thing for years now.

Some Pakistanis claim that Russia has no choice but to come to them! One thing you got to give to them, they have an exaggerated sense of the importance of their country and it's destiny. They believe they are strategically located and everyone will come and pay them rental for the location.

Pakistan has been a principal unconventional nuclear threat to world owing to the proliferation of nuke technology to every Tom, D!ck and Harry. There is a real threat of a dirty nuclear bomb in the near future, especially to India and source for that will be Pakistan.

I can understand Russia's view,Pakistan caused problem for them in Afghanistan war with the cross border insurgency and now they are facing an even greater nuclear threat which in the future can possiby be transferred to other neighboring Central asian nations all in the name of the islamic bomb made to be shared by all muslims. Russians fears though real their response to Pakistan would be the end of Pakistan.

Its just a sense of desperation that makes them speak like this. Can Russia really forget the humiliating affair of the Afghan War? of Chechnya???? I dont think so, I would strike at them at any opportunity i get even if I act friendly now! lol

You know, its not such a bad idea if Pakistan does get a few weapons from Russia (condition being that they must be outdated ones thrown at him)... that way his dependence on Russia increases and that can actually give us some indirect leveraging power on Pakistan due to our huge defence deals with Russia...

So, in the times of crisis, all we have to do is to lean on the Russians to lean on the Pakistanis...

Why do you think that Pakistanis will take outdated stuff from Russia?. All they want is good engines for their miserable JF-17.

AFAIK Even the Chinese air force is not keen on the JF-17. They will buy at the most a handful and it gives them an airforce to fight for them for free. Where else can you get such a cheap bargain? :blum3:
