In posturing that the Pakistani army is not known for, its chief, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, called for a resolution of the Kashmir dispute through political and diplomatic means at his annual defence day speech at GHQ in Rawalpindi this week.
Gen Bajwa's statement comes two days after foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif admitted for the first time that internationally proscribed terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-eTaiba and Jaish-e-Muhammed were operating from within the country .
Gen Bajwa, while emphasising that peace is essential for prosperity , said, “[The] Welfare of millions of people of these two countries is linked with permanent peace. Instead of insulting Pakistan and using force against the Kashmiris, it is in India's favour to seek resolution of the dispute through diplomatic and political means.“
Without naming India but referring to it as a neighbouring country , Gen Bajwa said, “We did not bring nuclear weapons to South Asia. And even now these weapons are simply a guarantee of peace in answer to a neighbouring country which is high on power. It is this country which has brought unconventional war to the South Asian region.“
He also said that Pakistan would continue extending diplomatic, political and moral support for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the United Nations resolution.
The Pakistan military leadership's change of approach and its focus on diplomacy gains significance in light of a consolidated global fight against terrorism.

WTF just happened? Baba Bajwa seems to be chickening out from a fight!! Apparently it has finally dawned on him that the policy of the Islamic Army of Pak of sponsoring terror in the neighborhood is getting the stick and resulting in diminishing returns. He's therefore started talking about a dialogue with India which needless to say will never happen unless and until the Paki Establishment stops its terror proxy war against India. But it seems to be a start in the right direction. Only time will tell whether they're serious on bettering relations with their neighbors especially India.
