ISLAMABAD: Punjab government on Friday filed a petition in Pakistan's Supreme Court challenging the release from house arrest of outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, linked to the Mumbai terror attacks.

The appeal against the Lahore High Court order, filed in the apex court this morning, said Saeed needed to be detained for his own "protection".

Saeed, also the founder of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, was freed from detention on the orders of the Lahore High Court on June 2 after spending nearly six months under house arrest.

He (Saeed) cannot move without informing the government. According to my information he cannot move to any place," Punjab government's lawyer Rana Sanaullah said.

Pakistani officials maintain that the restrictions imposed on JuD by UN Security Council - including a ban on travel and freezing the organisation's bank accounts - are being implemented.

59-year-old Saeed and several of his aides were placed under house arrest in December last year in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks following which his organisation was declared a front for the LeT by the United Nations Security Council. They were all subsequently freed.

India had recently expressed concern at the delay by Pakistani authorities in appealing against the release of Saeed. Since his release, Saeed has held meetings with several political hardliners and militant leaders, including United Jehad Council chief Syed Salahuddin.

Are they concerned that a US drone strike might get him? Or that India might call in an air strike on him if he is not adequately punished by the courts?

'House arrest' is an effective measure by Pakistan to protect it's most valuable citizens.
AQ Khan,Hafeez Saeed etc. They're probably fear that India might take some measures to extract or get 'revenge' against him.

Revenge from India? They can be rest assured that he is safe from any Indian assassination bid. US will not attack him in a drone strike as he is not "their" terrorist.
If India had the will to take out terrorists Mossad style, Dawood, Masood Azhar, Saeed would have already rotted in their graves.

Since 26/11, there has been a lot of talk about airstrikes by India. I hope that they do that if Saeed is released.....there is no reason for India to sit idly by while the leader of a group which planned the worst terrorist attack in India's history goes scot free because of either complicity or a technicality in Pak courts.

The Pakistanis are very paranoid when it comes to India and RAW.'House Arrest' is just a convenient way for them to keep Saeed safe from 'anything'.

The time for any air strike has passed. It could have been in the immediate aftermath of the 26/11 attack.
The only thing possible is an assassination by the RAW. But I have never heard of anything like that by RAW. Anyone knows of any high profile political assassination carried out by RAW?

You guys should watch the movie "Munich". It's a Steven Spielberg movie about the terrorist attacks on Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games at Munich, and how Israel took revenge for the attacks. Amazing movie.......wish India had the ball$ to do that, but since we're civilizationally pacifist, I see no hope for that. India's foreign policy is basically modelled on Jesus' "Turn the other cheek" philosophy.

After the 26/11 attacks India has adopted an approach that will show if Pakistan is sincere in rooting out terror from it's soil.Contrary to immediate aftermath of the attacks India had no plans to attack Pakistan, rather India opted to gather evidence about Pakistani involvement and force Pakistan to acknowledge that the terror attacks have been staged from it's soil and take action against those responsible.
