We shall have many state of the art systems to be integrated in the ship which includes hypersonic Brahmos with 800 kilometres of range, next-generation nirbhay, torpedo decoy system, camouflage, top class Agies class destroyer equivalent radar, Ex SAM, Short range interceptor and best in class chopper. It will dominate Indian ocean. Pakistan will highly afraid of this ship and it will put China on backfoot. Will it be just next to Zumwalt class? I don't think anything excdpt Zumwalt class will be ahead.

What does 16 vls cell mean ?On kolkata class ships
16 individual cells of the Mk.41 vertical launch system for missiles. Each system can carry either 1 big missile or 4 smaller missiles (quad-packed). So the same set of 16 cells can be configured to carry either 16 Harpoon/Tomahawk type cruise missiles or 16 large surface-to-air missiles like SM-2 or up to 64 ESSM small surface-to-air missiles.

Or any combination of them. Like 8 Harpoons and 32 ESSM.

Pictured below is a Chinese equivalent of the same.

Kolkata-class (or any Indian ship for that matter) does not have Mk.41 system, we have a combination of Russian & Israeli VLS systems used for cruise missiles & SAMs respectively.

Kolkata class in question has 32 VLS cells for Barak-8 SAM plus 16 large VLS cells for Brahmos cruise missiles. Due to disparity in sizes we cannot mix-and-match the missiles and we cannot quad-pack.

Not sure if discussed earlier, but Interesting implications for NGD & NGF:

VLS.JPG

from Page 61 of this, penned by Dr. Satheesh Reddy himself:

Looks like what I "envisioned" is indeed happening:

2. Emphasis on AAW and Land-attack capability with common VLS for up to 80-96 cells for any combination of Barak 8ER, XRSAM, AD-1, AD-2, quad-packed VL-SRSAM, Nirbhay LACM & SMART ASuBM.
This is of utmost importance. But so far there is no official chatter from IN sources regarding any plan for such a system and that is concerning. But theoretically it should be possible. Nirbhay is Tomahawk-sized, Barak & VLSRSAM are small enough, AD-1 is reportedly similar both in capability set and dimensions to Aster-30 Block-2, while AD-2 is similar to SM-3...a VLS cell of reasonable size can certainly be developed that can accommodate all of these types.

It would seem future IN surface combatants would indeed have 2 types of VLS:

1) a mid-size Universal type that can accommodate all of the Indian-developed missiles (including Barak-8), with potential for quad-packing of smaller missiles like VL-SRSAM

2) a larger type for outsize/irregularly-sized weapons like Brahmos, future Scramjet ASCM, and maybe even SMART

Far as I know, this is the first official word on true UVLS. If there was some news before, do let me know (unofficial word of mouth se kuch matlab nahi).

Note that the term "UVLS" or "UVLM" was in use in Indian Navy parlance for a long time because of the L&T-built 'UVLM' module that sits on current major warships. So called because it can accommodate either BrahMos or Klub.

Hence, not a UVLS in the true sense.

Ya'll Nibbiars now rumor are there that the Project 18 Class aka NGD will have some short of Ballastic defence systems. We'll as there are also rumors that the Type 55 Class Cruisers can accommodate even a SRBM or even a compact MRBM missile.

Ya'll Nibbiars Clearly how a dreadnought changed the battleship. The large Cruiser we are seeing now getting into service will probably have ABM and may be also have the Ballastic missiles.

They will more than likely have BMD - which means long-range/high-altitude SAMs & a powerful radar.

Not ballistic missiles. Even if you can find the space for it, 1-2 BMs are next to useless against any type of target (ship or land) unless carrying nuclear warheads.

There are enough pics of 055 available - where do we see a VLS large enough to accommodate a BM?

Ya'll Nibbiars @Bhurki Nibba was talking about the BM capability on the Chinese Destroyers threads. Don't knew if feasible.
